ZAMBIA Zambia is named after the mighty Zambezi River, which rises in its northwest corner, flows into Angola before re-

entering Zambia at the Cholwezi Rapids, and thereafter forms the southern border of the country with neighboring Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. The Zambezi and its valleys are one defining aspect of this country; another is the southern end of the great African Rift system that cuts through the eastern and southern parts via several deep rifts along the course of the Luangwa River. Incredible natural features also include the breath-taking Victoria Falls, Lake Tanganyika, the second deepest natural lake in the world, and the floodplains of Busanga, Barotseland, the Kafue Flats and the Bangweulu Swamps.

In general, the country is situated on a high plateau and is characterized by immensity of space and gentle horizons, broken by the enormous valleys of the Upper Zambezi and its tributaries - of which the Kafue and Luangwa Rivers are the largest. With an average height of 1200 meters above sea level the climate is comfortable rather than tropical, while the valleys of the middle Zambezi, the Luangwa and its tributaries, all about 300m above sea level, are hotter and more humid. The Kafue Flats form yet another valley trough, although the altitude, about 975m, is only slightly less than the surrounding plateau.

In the south, the mighty Zambezi hurls itself over the lip of the Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, twists silently through the narrow Batoka Gorges before flowing into Lake Kariba and on through the Lower Zambezi Valley. The Kafue and Luangwa Rivers both flow into the Zambezi and their fertile banks play host to some of the country's most important conservation areas. In the east the vast floodplains of Barotseland flank the Zambezi with the best-known wildlife areas being the Liuwa Plain and Sioma Ngwezi National Parks. Much further along its course, the Lower Zambezi National Park replaces the wide-open nature of Liuwa with a juxtaposition of woodland, escarpment and river. The 2.25-million-hectare Kafue National Park and surrounding game management areas in central Zambia make up the largest conservation area and are a mix of miombo woodlands and seasonally inundated floodplains. Like Liuwa and Sioma Ngwezi it is under-visited and is enveloped in an atmosphere of solitude, wilderness and timelessness. The North Luangwa and South Luangwa National Parks and associated game management areas in the east of the country make up almost as large an area where they straddle the Luangwa River and provide an exceptional experience in the ancient riverine woodlands adjacent to the river. Zambia offers impressive diversity as well as large concentrations and numbers of wildlife, including endemic subspecies of giraffe and wildebeest found in the Luangwa River valley, while extensive herds of black lechwe inhabit the floodplains of the Bangweulu. Bird life is particularly prolific, with 740 bird species found here, including many 'specials'; it is the southernmost extreme of the eccentric-looking African shoebill's range for example and one of the best places to see this sought-after species.

11 September Arrive in Zambia – Lower Zambezi In accordance with your international air itinerary, arrive at Lusaka International Airport on Emirates EK 713 ETA 14:35 (2:35pm as booked by you). As you exit the aircraft, you’ll be met by a representative who will assist you through immigration, help you obtain an entry visa for US $50 per person, collect your luggage and then assist you in connecting with a private charter flight (ETD 15:30hrs ETA 16:00hrs) to Jeki airstrip in Lower Zambezi National Park. A camp guide meets you at the airstrip and transfers you to Sausage Tree Camp where your three-night stay in Signature Tents is fully inclusive of all meals, drinks, laundry and all game viewing activities.

Sausage Tree Camp Sausage Tree Camp is the epitome of bush chic, set in a stunning location along the Zambezi River at the heart of the Lower Zambezi National Park. The pristine location and Sausage Tree Camp offer all the game, all the luxury without all the people!

Sleeping only 16 guests, Sausage Tree Camp offers a civilized approach to a true bush experience with lavish attention to detail. The central dining and bar area is fronted by an enormous teak deck overlooking the Zambezi River and low set reed islands teeming with game. The 25m Lap-pool is idyllically situated right on the edge of the riverbank, under shading Mahogany trees with outstanding views.

Accommodation is in luxurious white Bedouin style tents. Each of the five 'Signature Tents' has a unique open-air en-suite bathroom, a distinct Sausage Tree Camp trademark, and sliding teak doors opening onto private decks with Zambezi River views. Tents are generously spaced along the Zambezi River bank allowing the elephants to amble in between. Local materials create a minimalist style in which the teak furniture, including sumptuous four-poster beds, contrasts with pure white fabrics and flowing mosquito nets.

Nearly hidden from one another, and shaded by mature Sausage and Mahogany trees, the tents are cool, private sanctuaries to return to for an afternoon siesta or good nights rest. Sausage Tree Camp's African inspired fusion cuisine will certainly be a highlight of your stay. Made from the freshest ingredients, the tastes and presentation will astound you. But the experience of dining at Sausage Tree Camp goes far beyond the food itself. Dinners to the sounds of the African evening by candle light in the open air dining tent, by star light on the deck, by moonlight on an island in the Zambezi, by campfire light deep in the bush, or by lantern light in the privacy of your own deck; Lunches on a sandbank in the Zambezi River, the water lapping at your feet; Sundowners watching the sun set over the Zambezi escarpment from the deck or overlooking the river or open plains. Each meal will bring surprises and memories to cherish.

12-13 September Lower Zambezi You have two full days to enjoy private safari activities in Lower Zambezi including day and night game drives, walking safaris, boat cruises and canoe safaris. All meals and accommodation are at Sausage Tree Camp.

Lower Zambezi National Park Lower Zambezi National Park occupies 1,598 square miles of prime wilderness in the Zambezi Valley. Here the wooded hills of the Zambezi Escarpment – which reach 3,000 feet above the valley floor – come to within a few miles of the riverbank. This creates a dramatic backdrop to explorations along the Zambezi. The amount of bountiful floodplain habitat in the park is small when compared to that of the less prolific miombo woodlands of the interior hill country.

Page 5: Next Adventure Custom Safari in Zambia SAMPLE September 11 … · 2018. 12. 4. · Next Adventure Inc. 738 Gilman Street, Berkeley, CA 94710-1325 800 562 7298 or 510 526 7027 1 Next

Nonetheless, game viewing on the floodplain is good, especially during the dry season when animals are drawn to the river. The park is located opposite Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools, and together these sanctuaries form the most game-rich section of the Zambezi. The Lower Zambezi National Park gets it's stunning scenery from the combination of 120km of Zambezi River front, the concentration of game in the valley floor and the backdrop of the magnificent Zambezi Escarpment, the Southern limit of the Great East African Rift Valley. The Lower Zambezi National Park has a large variety of faunal species including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and insects, distributed in varying densities and in complex and diverse eco-systems. During your stay in the Lower Zambezi, you will have a very good chance of seeing the following large mammals: elephant, hippo, buffalo, waterbuck, zebra, impala, bushbuck and kudu. Of the carnivores, there are solid numbers of leopard, lion and hyena. Other commonly seen animals are wild dog (african hunting dog); serval and the african wild cat. Smaller animals include the side striped jackal; dwarf, slender & banded mongoose; large spotted genet; civet; tree squirrel; honey badger; porcupine and aardvark. 14 September South Luangwa – Southern Sector This morning, after breakfast and a morning activity, you transfer back to Jeki airstrip. Board a private charter flight (ETD 11:00hrs ETA 12:41hrs) direct to Kapamba airstrip in the Southern Sector of South Luangwa National Park. Upon arrival, you are met for a road transfer (30 min) to Chamilandu Camp where your two-night stay is fully inclusive of all meals, drinks, laundry, park fees and all game viewing activities.

Chamilandu Camp There’s nothing quite like waking up at Chamilandu.

Early morning views don’t get much better than the rippling waters of the Luangwa River, the gentle rise of the Chindeni Hills and a vast African sky – especially when you’re lying in a four-poster bed in a handsome stilted tree

Page 6: Next Adventure Custom Safari in Zambia SAMPLE September 11 … · 2018. 12. 4. · Next Adventure Inc. 738 Gilman Street, Berkeley, CA 94710-1325 800 562 7298 or 510 526 7027 1 Next

house. You don’t even need to leave your bed to see the wildlife – from your unique vantage point you can watch as animals roam across the landscape, or swing through the trees above your head.

There are just three stilted chalets at this exclusive camp, set on the riverbank beneath a soaring ebony grove. Enjoy a sundowner from the comfort of the thatched bar and dining area, as you watch the wildlife do the same at the river. Exceptional game viewing and understated elegance make Chamilandu a place to remember. Chamilandu's three exquisite tree houses perch right on the edge of the Luangwa River. Each has

its own raised veranda to loll on during the heat of the day, and an open-fronted en-suite bathroom with the same magnificent views over the tranquil waters. Two of the tree houses have twin beds (queen-sized beds) and one has a double (king-sized bed). With capacity for just six guests, this is the perfect camp for small groups. 15 September South Luangwa – Southern Sector You have the full day to enjoy safari activities in the southern sector of South Luangwa including day & night game drives and walking safaris. All meals and accommodation are at Chamilandu Camp.

South Luangwa National Park The most important wildlife sanctuary in Zambia is South Luangwa National Park. Most of the 3,535 square-mile area extends from the Luangwa River's west bank to the crest of the Muchinga Escarpment. Only the remote and little-visited southernmost sector around Luamfwa Lagoon and the small salient of the game-rich Nsefu sector are east of the river. Nsefu and the central area around Mfuwe Lagoon are the primary safari areas. This huge park is almost entirely wilderness. Game tracks are very few and are virtually all concentrated on the stretch of floodplain between the Mfuwe area and the Nsefu sector. The rest of the park can only be explored on foot. While it is famous for its bush walking safaris, very few visitors mount the major expeditions necessary to explore deep into the interior. Although such adventures are surely rewarding, they are hardly necessary—game viewing on the rich alluvial floodplains of the Luangwa rivals the best found anywhere in Africa. Although South Luangwa is officially opened year-round, the safari season runs from June I through October 3I. Almost all lodges and safari camps are closed during the intervening rainy months because (except on the few all-weather roads in the Mfuwe area) it is then impossible to get around. Flooding makes most of the park completely inaccessible to vehicles, while over-the-head-high grass makes bush walking dangerous. During the rains, game is widely dispersed throughout the park and neighboring game management areas, although elephants are still plentiful on the floodplain grasslands and birding is exceptional. As the dry season progresses, the animals come down from the higher portions of the valley.

Page 7: Next Adventure Custom Safari in Zambia SAMPLE September 11 … · 2018. 12. 4. · Next Adventure Inc. 738 Gilman Street, Berkeley, CA 94710-1325 800 562 7298 or 510 526 7027 1 Next

They move toward the lagoons and dambos of the floodplain and gradually pack into the area around the main river. At the height of the dry season, a parade of impalas, pukes, waterbuck, and baboons always seem to be in view along the Luangwa River, where hippos rest and crocodiles laze on exposed sandbanks. Hippos are crowded into the remaining suitable pools, so fights and aggressive behavior are commonly seen and constantly heard.

The valley floor averages less than 2,000 feet in elevation, so temperatures are always warm. From June through August, the weather is quite pleasant for walking safaris. September and October have optimal game viewing, but it is dry and hot. With few roads and plenty of wildlife, South Luangwa has a deserved reputation for foot safaris, which have become a park standard. These come in many forms. Most lodges offer brief morning or afternoon walks, and some run multi-day treks with nights in seasonal bush camps. All foot safaris share some characteristics.

Walking groups are always accompanied by an armed national park game scout and the safari operator's guide, or "trail leader." The armed scout is responsible for the group's safety. Scouts vary in their quality and ability to communicate, but generally they know their business: in the off-season, they are very likely doing elephant-control work. Trail leaders provide natural history interpretation.

Night drives are another regular feature at Luangwa safari camps. Leopards are commonly seen, and it's not unusual to follow them on their rounds or even observe a kill. Although drivers will approach most animals fairly closely, they give hippos a wide berth and do not like to put them in the spotlight. These skittish animals are easily confused and may accidentally run into a vehicle. Lions, hyenas, and myriad odd creatures—even crocodiles moving overland—can appear in the spotlight's beam. Perhaps one of the most startling is the pennant-winged nightjar, a nocturnal, insect-eating bird. Breeding males carry 2-foot-long streamers on their wings that are more than twice the length of the body, causing them to flutter, ghostlike, through the night sky.”

16 September South Luangwa – Northern Sector After breakfast and perhaps a final activity, you have a road transfer/game drive through the park (about 3 hours, departure time to be reconfirmed the day prior). Your 3-night stay at Kaingo Camp is fully inclusive of all meals, drinks, laundry, park fees and all game viewing activities. After a brief orientation and time to freshen up, you can enjoy an afternoon game drive.

Kaingo Camp Overlooking the Luangwa River deep within the prime area of the South Luangwa National Park, Kaingo’s relaxed, personal and friendly atmosphere offers its guests fantastic game-viewing opportunities within an area of incredible beauty and varied terrain. Built and run by Derek Shenton, son of Barry Shenton – former ranger in Luangwa and warden of Kafue National Park – Kaingo has many attributes from the Shenton family ranging from the camps stylish design and practical layout to the local farm produce. The large centrally located open-sided sitting room includes a dining area, library and Kaingo’s renowned thousand year old lead-wood bar. Nestled discretely apart on the banks of the river, Kaingo’s chalets were designed with the sole purpose of transporting you safely into the world of the Luangwa without a single distraction. Large fly-wired windows provide stunning views of the river; and the complete absence of generator noise (we prefer solar power) means nothing but the wheeze-honk of a hippo interferes with the sounds of a lions roar, a leopards call or the early morning ‘drumming’ of the Ground Hornbill. In addition to the indoor ensuite bathroom, each chalet has a stunning outdoor bathtub with shady views of a pod of hippos. A special feature of Kaingo are the unique individual decks built out over the river in front of each chalet. From this relaxing vantage point one can view game coming down to drink, basking hippos, aquatic birds, crocodiles fishing, and daily elephant crossings. 17-18 September South Luangwa – Northern Sector You have two full days to enjoy safari activities in the northern sector of South Luangwa including day and night game drives, walking safaris and photographic hides. All meals and accommodation are at Kaingo Camp. Note: Each couple will have the opportunity to sleep out at the Elephant Hide for one night.

Kaingo Elephant Hide Our Elephant Hide is a platform nestled between an Ebony and a Sausage tree directly above a centuries old elephant highway. Knowledge is passed from elders to juvenile elephants in the community and for hundreds of years this beautiful spot in the river has been used for drinking, mud bathing, social greeting and river crossing. When the elephants come to the river at the crossing point we gather everyone and race to the hide where the tree gives us a unique – and safe – vantage point from which to watch their activities.

Our elephant hide is situated high up in the boughs of a tree on the riverbank. After dinner at Kaingo we will take you to the elephant hide for your night of real African Adventure. The bed is set up on a dedicated platform and we position a scout (discretely in an enclosed vehicle) on the ground beneath you. 19 September South Luangwa – Central Sector This morning you have a road transfer/game drive through the park (about 1.5 hours, time to be reconfirmed the day prior) to Chinzombo Camp where your two-night stay is fully inclusive of all meals, drinks, laundry, park fees and all game viewing activities.

Chinzombo Camp Wildly luxurious, designed by award winning architects Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens, Chinzombo brings levels of comfort, style and elegance previously unseen to the Luangwa Valley. The old Chinzombo Camp was for years the green season base for Norman Carr way back in the 1970’s. We are thrilled to be giving this unique place a new lease of life. The camp is super-luxurious but retains its bush feel with grass and canvas walls and spacious living areas that melt into the exquisite surroundings of the beautiful, tranquil site.

Gigantic, ancient shade trees offer peace and tranquility for guests staying in any one of the six stunning villas, one of which is a family suite with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, perfect for families or small groups. Each villa will has its own private pool, cooled sleeping areas, and massive bathroom. The camp is set within 60 acres of private land with Luangwa River frontage; the views from its riverside location which teems with wildlife, plus the private, direct access into one of the most game rich areas of the National Park all combine to make this a truly special place.

Chinzombo Camp is the perfect place from which to explore the majestic wilds of the Luangwa in style, luxury and exclusivity – all year round. 20 September South Luangwa – Central Sector You have the full day to enjoy safari activities in the central sector of South Luangwa including day & night game drives and walking safaris. All meals and accommodation are at Chinzombo Camp. 21 September Kafue – Busanga Plains This morning you have an early road transfer to Mfuwe Airport (about 2 hours) where you board a scheduled charter flight via Lusaka (ETD 09:10 ETA 12:50hrs) to Kafue National Park. Shumba Camp

Located on a tree island in the center of the breathtaking Busanga Plains is stylish Shumba Camp. Its six luxury tented units are spacious, en-suite with both indoor and outdoor showers, and all raised on wooden platforms with spectacular views of the surrounding plains. The bar and dining area is shaded by spectacular fig trees and boasts magnificent vistas over the open wildlife-rich plains. Dinner takes place either on the deck or in the cozy boma, along with a little Zambian culture while the camp’s main deck is a perfect place to star gaze or relax after your evening meal. The area is a magnet for a wealth of plains game, followed by lion, wild dog and cheetah.

Shumba Camp is situated in the middle of the Busanga Plains in the midst of various lion pride territories and is said to provide some of the best lion viewing in Africa. These lion are often seen in and around camp. The area is also perfectly situated to see large numbers of plains game such as puku, red lechwe, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, oribi, buffalo and wildebeest. Cheetah and wild dog may also be seen, while a special treat is the ‘resident’ herd of rare roan antelope. For birding enthusiasts, the park boasts 491 species, including endemics such as Chaplin's barbet.

22-23 September Kafue – Busanga Plains You have two full days to enjoy safari activities in Busanga Plains include day & night game drives and a complimentary hot air balloon safari! All meals and accommodation are at Shumba Camp. Nowhere else in Zambia can you take to the skies in such style. Busanga Plains Kafue’s most astonishing attraction is its Busanga Plain – an ecosystem much like that of Botswana's better-known Okavango Delta. This broad depression in the park's far north is a sump for the many streams that discharge from the surrounding miombo. The plain is inundated during the rainy season, when it is turned into a shallow sea of flooded grass. Only occasional termite mound islands—often crowned by a single fig tree or a bushy grove of wild date (Phoenix) palms—rise above the flood. The water meadows and pools at the heart of the Busanga Plain stay moist right through the dry season. Water birds then concentrate around pothole depressions. Spoonbills, squacco herons, egrets, and wattled or blacksmith plovers can all be seen in great numbers. Most startling are concentrations of large cranes—both wattled and crowned—that stalk the grassy flats. The water meadows are the habitat of the red lechwe, and these handsome antelope are present in good¬ sized herds.

Puku mix with the lechwe where they can, but do not actually venture onto flooded ground. Bands of wildebeest and zebra—as well as unusually large herds of roan antelope—graze the dryer grasslands. Sable and eland inhabit the wooded fringes of the plain. Where the high grass has been burnt off, it is easy to see pairs of diminutive oribi. The Lufupa River drains the waterlogged plains. At its headwaters, the river is little more than a meander connecting scattered pools. Hippos crowd these mud puddles in the dry season. This makes for ter¬rific hippo watching, but the many skulls and piles of hippo bones scattered on the plain attest to the animal's vulnerability to poachers.

Victoria Falls

At 1708 meters wide, Victoria Falls is the most expansive curtain of water in the world and drops more than 100 meters into the sheer Zambezi Gorge. Located in the south-west corner of Zambia, these Falls and the Zambezi River are the central points in an area of spectacular scenic beauty: from the Falls themselves to the broad, picturesque course of the Zambezi River upstream, the rainforest adjacent and the stark jagged gorge downstream, the power and timelessness of nature's forces are evident throughout. The Tonga and Makalolo peoples lived here for centuries before the Falls were 'discovered' by David Livingstone in 1855. He gave it the highest honor he could think of: naming it after his Queen. Its local name, Mosi-Oa-Tunya - "the Smoke that Thunders" - more accurately defines the essence of the place: the rising, shining spray that can be seen 30km away. This vapor has the effect of adding moisture in the form of humidity to the air in the "splash zone", so that a unique, small rainforest ecosystem clings to the edge of the Falls, providing a toehold for no less than 70 shrub and 150 herbaceous species, as well as trees such as pod and Natal mahogany, ebony, Cape and strangler fig and

Transvaal red milkwood. Further away from the constant spray, the surrounding area comprises mopane and teak woodlands with luxuriant riverine forest along the banks of the Zambezi River. The presence of several protected areas in the vicinity, from the Zambezi National Park in Zimbabwe to the Mosi-oa-Tunya Zoological Park in Zambia, means that herds of big game such as elephant and buffalo, as well as smaller species and even predators such as lion persist in the area. As mesmerizing as the Falls are, the paths through the rainforest at their edge allow one to catch a glimpse of some of the mammals that live here: bushbuck stare shyly from behind a bush, banded mongoose scurry through the undergrowth, and vervet monkey and baboon flit through the trees; wailing Trumpeter Hornbills sail past in their characteristically undulating flight and the crimson-blazoned wings of the Schalow's Turaco can be seen by patient birders. Interestingly, there is a distinct difference in the fish species above and below the Falls, which clearly form a comprehensive barrier to fish movements upstream: 39 species are recorded from below and 84 above the Falls. Nile crocodile and hippo are common above the Falls. Vic Falls, as it is affectionately known, straddles the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, and both countries share its World Heritage Site status.
