Our First Social Event since March!! Welcome Back Cookout – August 1st (2:00PM to 6:00PM)

The menu is our basic cookout with hot dogs and hamburgers … but the side dishes have not been determined at this time. Please support the Lodge in our first endeavor to get our members back to enjoy the Lodge and our comradery.

Arlington #1315 to Participate Again at the VMA Heart of the Community Chili Cook-Off Due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic, a VMA District 4 chili cook-off could not happen this past spring or summer. The VMA District 4 asked us if we would be

by the Governor of Virginia

Congratulations to Kenneth McQuinn for attaining 50 years of Service in the Loyal Order of the Moose

The Arlington Fraternity extends our appreciation of Brother Kenneth’s continued dedication to support Mooseheart and Moosehaven. Brother Kenneth has earned a Lifetime Membership in the Loyal Order of the Moose. We are PROUD to have Brother Kenneth in the Arlington Fraternity! .

SORRY! The Lodge changed our First Social Event in August It was expressed by our Brothers at the General Membership Meeting on July 21st that we should start off with something simple, in regard to a food menu, as our first Social Event. It was agreed that a hamburger & hot dog cookout event would be easier in cooking and serving; therefore, the originally planned Bull Roast as the first event has been deferred until the end of the month.

If you have not heard … the Lodge is AGAIN OPEN!!. We are taking baby steps and easing into some Social Events this Month. We understand anyone who is hesitant to come to the Lodge during these extraordinary circumstances of the coronavirus pandemic; therefore, we are also offering “to-go” boxes for each Social Event. The Lodge needs your support, so if you do not want to mingle among the members in the Lodge, please consider taking some food from the Social Events to eat at home. We will even bring the food out to your car in the parking lot if desired, but call ahead before you get to the Lodge. A win-win situation for you and the Lodge!

In keeping with baby steps at this time the Friday Night Dinners will not be offered in August

TEMPORARY “Baby Steps” Arlington #1315 Moose Lodge

Hours of Operation

Closing each day will be 9:00pm

Monday – Wednesday 3:00pm to 9:00pm Thursday Noon to 9:00pm Friday Noon to 9:00am Saturday Noon to 9:00am Sunday Noon to 9:00pm Social Quarters & ABC Manager Jane Kennedy

ABC Managers Michael Pogue Kristin Medel Sara Wick “To go” Food is allowed to be brought into the

Lodge during August except at an Event! Want to enjoy some food while enjoying your favorite beverage at the Lodge? Since we will NOT be serving any food except at a

planned event, we are allowing our members to bring “to go” food into the Lodge; however, all of our serving ware will be locked away. Our members who bring “to go” food or get the food delivered MUST provide their own serving “extras” (e.g.: paper plates, utensils, condiments, napkins, etc.) and cleanup after eating at their table! SORRY, but the Lodge does not want any responsibly for food except during a planned event.

Did You Forget to Renew Your Moose Dues? We know that renewing your Moose Membership may not have been a priority during the past several months due to the world facing the COVID-19 virus pandemic and our members trying to survive day-to-day. However, as a private club, only members that possess an

up-to-date “valid” Moose ID card can be within the Lodge and served to make a purchase (including any enjoyment of electronic gaming and paper pull tabs). Want to be at the Lodge? Renew your dues!

Annual Bull Roast on August 29th (2:00PM – 6:00PM) Many people have said that our Lodge is a “load of bull” (only kidding; but there are some recent exaggerations that come to mind). Well, on this day it is really true … as we plan to cook tender and juicy red meat for our members. Again, the menu selections have not been determined as of this publication, but we plan to provide something similar to last year.

Golly … Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!! The New Name is the Washington Football Team Who would have thought that the new name for the burgundy & gold this season would be called the “Washington Football Team”? ONLY all the newspapers, local and national television sports channels, etc. who referred to any

references of the team in the news since the team announced that they would change the name on July 3. From the experts, we have been reminded that it takes many, many months to change a professional name and associated trademark image; therefore, this is probably a good compromise to get us through the 2020 season while a “good” name is selected. But doesn’t it sound like the name that was given for the athletes who represented Russia (who were not banned) in the 2018 Olympics under a neutral flag? In addition, can we sing the team song as “Hail to the Washington Football Team”? Not a sermon, just the opinion of the Editor … a dedicated fan since 1974.

Legion Breakfast and New LOOM & WOTM Member Orientation is Planned for Sunday, September 13th It is not BUSINESS AS USUAL … but we are going to try to come as close as possible to provide the outstanding breakfast selections. It’s an all-you-can-eat breakfast for a reasonable price of $8.00/adult and $4.00/child. As usual, the event will consist of sausage patties/links, lots of bacon, heated maple syrup, fruit salad, and home fried potatoes. In addition, there will be “made-to-order” eggs (any way you want them including a variety of omelets), pancakes, and French toast. Furthermore, there will be at least one “surprise” food item, coffee, and orange juice.

The orientation will occur near the end of the Legion Breakfast. New members that plan to attend the orientation should come early to enjoy the breakfast offering, as the Lodge/Chapter will pay the breakfast fee. Attendance at the orientation is not mandatory for continuing membership, but we are hoping that everyone wants to know about our support to Mooseheart & Moosehaven … and maybe learn some answers to questions about our Arlington Fraternity. New Member Initiative: No Application Fee (July 1 thru September 30, 2020) The Supreme Council, Grand Council and Moose Legion Council have all approved “NO application fee” as an encouragement to build our membership during these trying times. Let’s take advantage of this initiative and welcome

our neighbors, friends, and family into our Moose Family (Lodges, Chapters and Moose Legions). Bringing a Guest to the Lodge?

First, the Arlington Fraternity welcomes all individuals who are considering to be new members of our Moose organization. However, please make sure your guest is aware of all COVID-19 virus requirements, as well as, Moose requirements, while in the Lodge (i.e.: not being sick before he/she enters into the Lodge, wearing of masks

while moving throughout the Lodge, 6-foot distancing is mandatory, cannot purchase any beverages or play the electronic gaming because they are not members, etc.), Show them the layout of the Lodge and describe our Moose Mission in supporting Mooseheart and Moosehaven, as well as supporting our local community. Remember that the guest is not known by our members and consideration should be given to protect the guest and our members.

Please Contribute to the Endowment Even though we are taking baby steps in getting back into the swing of our gatherings, we still need to consider our main mission of supporting Mooseheart and Moosehaven. Therefore, we count on our social events to request contributions for the endowment. Expect the Nine O’clock Prayer to be conducted at all our social events. The Arlington Fraternity needs to make up

our support for the past several months. If you visit the Lodge for the social events and leave before we conduct the Nine O’clock prayer, please make a contribution in the endowment box on the bar near the purchase line. Any contribution will help support Mooseheart and Moosehaven. It should be noted that we have received donations in honor of Andy Ogle and all funds were submitted as an endowment to Moose Charities.

Three Fellowship Conferrals announced in September Due to various considerations surrounding and because of safety guidelines concerning COVID-19, the Association has made alternative plans (outside a typical in-person State Convention setting) to conduct the conferrals of

approved Moose Legionnaire candidates into the Fellowship Degree of Honor. A candidate may attend any one of the three planned Fellowship Conferrals for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Please note this is a closed meeting. Only current Fellows, Pilgrims, and approved candidates may attend the actual Conferral. All candidates are required to wear a coat and tie. Fellows and Pilgrims regalia are required.

The three Fellowship Conferrals are scheduled as follows: Saturday, September 12, 2020 @11:00AM

We are really trying to give our Members the latest information! The Arlington Fraternity is planning the best we can, but it seems that each day brings another surprise due to the ever

changing conditions affected by the coronavirus pandemic. What we state in this published Newsletter could very well be cancelled/changed within the month. We will try to notify our members on a weekly basis, in sent emails, of any cancellations or revisions, but we are not perfect. Please accept our apology in advance.

VMA District 4 Meeting on July 18th The Arlington Fraternity did not encourage our members to attend this meeting, due to the pandemic conditions of our local

Area; as we did not want to expose their health to an unnecessary possible hazard just to support “in name” our Lodge. For the record, the 6-foot distance requirement and masks were worn. The Arlington Fraternity wants to thank Tom Oderwald, Elizabeth Coombs, and John Matis for representing our Lodge and Chapter at the meeting. Besides the Arlington Fraternity being voted to represent the VMA District 4 at the VMA Heart of the Community Chili Cook-Off in September, the Lodges within the VMA District 4 agreed to provide $500.00 for food and lodging to Arlington Fraternity to represent the VMA District 4. We are discussing a “chuck wagon” theme this year for an improvement to our booth décor and a “tweak” in our chili offering. It was implemented that each Lodge would contribute $25.00/month in support of raising funds for the VMA District 4 (a total of $300.00 per year). This would hopefully not require the VMA District 4 to have any fundraisers for expenditures during the year. Nominations for new Directors were conducted by the Lodges prior to the meeting and elections were conducted in the VMA District 4 Meeting. Announcement of the new Directors will be published in the September Newsletter, as the Administrator did not take good notes to remember ALL of the new Directors.

One-Liner of the Month Why was it so hot in the stadium after the ball game? … all the fans left! (In today’s world the stadium is always hot; as there are no fans when the games are played)

The Arlington Fraternity has NOT Forgotten about the Celebration of Life Ceremonies! We want our members and the friends of our members who have passed since March to be patient. We expect gatherings that could exceed the allowable attendance in the Lodge during these trying times with the

coronavirus pandemic; therefore, the Arlington Fraternity has again postponed the Celebration of Life ceremonies in August. Please understand that we do not want to turn anyone away due to attendance limitations.

Lodge Repairs/Replacement The Lodge wants to thank the team of Andre McFail and Jane Kennedy for unclogging the sinks in the Men’s Restroom of the Social Quarters. They used a plumber “snake” to perform the emergency work, and then for “good measure” poured Drano down each sink.

The Lodge wants to thank Billy Hensley for coordinating the efforts for a plumber to fix the leak of the toilet within the Women’s restroom of the Social Quarters. They tried to duplicate the leak by flushing each of the 3 toilets in the restroom “50 times”; but no leaks were observed. Maybe the unclogging of the sinks in the Men’s Restroom had fixed the problem? Who knows how the plumbing was installed when the Lodge was built (or possibly modified over the many years of existence). It should be noted that the plumber did not charge the Lodge for his service … but the Administrator does not want to see the bill for the water! The Lodge paid the annual fee for the Fire Prevention Code Permit while the Lodge was closed in May 2020. This renewal always results in an inspection by the Fairfax County Fire Department … which happened on July 20th. The Lodge did well, but we did not pass. A few electrical extension cords plugged into other extension cords were fire code violations, but the main reasons for not passing the inspection were that the fire extinguisher inspections and the cleaning of the kitchen hood would expire at the end of July 2020. Appropriate vendors for the fire extinguishers and kitchen hood have been scheduled to perform the work in the end of July (Note: this Newsletter is being written before the work is completed). Another inspection by the Fire Department is scheduled for the first week of August. The Administrator happened to come to the Lodge as the Fire Marshal was leaving after his inspection on July 20th. An “open” issue has been brewing over the past three years pertaining to the fire code compliance of the kitchen hood extinguisher system. The vendor that services this system each year (and is operational) has repeatedly informed the Lodge that it is non-compliant with current fire codes; however, many members have argued that the Lodge is “grandfathered”. SO the Administrator, who probably had a “are you crazy moment”, asked the Fire Marshal about the kitchen hood extinguisher system being non-compliant. It is official … there is no “grandfather” clause and the Lodge must upgrade. The Lodge will be negotiating with the vendor to upgrade the system, as the subject to upgrade was approved by the membership at the General Membership Meeting on July 21st.

Volunteers are needed! Even with limited events at the Lodge, we ca not expect our “normal” event members to be at the planned events, as they also have other priorities (personal & business). PLEASE volunteer to help the Lodge.

Let’s Talk About Gaming (A Message from the Administrator) In keeping with guidance from Moose International, the Lodge requested Powerhouse Gaming to provide a new one-year contract that does not have an automatic renewal clause. In March 2020, the new one-year contract was sent to Moose International and was approved

for the Lodge to sign. The Arlington LOOM general membership approved to sign the contract on July 7, 2020 (the first LOOM General Meeting since we were closed due to the coronavirus pandemic). The decision to stay with Powerhouse Gaming was three-fold. They were the only vender at that time to have portable gaming terminals which our members enjoy to move around within the Social Quarters, in lieu of the large fixed console gaming terminals. Second, all the money collected to play the existing gaming system has only one location (kiosk to purchase gaming tickets,; in lieu of each large fixed console gaming terminal collecting money to play at that specific location, which means additional time to collect the money and expands the bookkeeping responsibilities of the Administrator (who has full time employment outside of the Lodge). Finally, Powerhouse Gaming has always supported the Arlington Fraternit,; and loyalty is imperative among partners who are fair and reasonable to each other.

Let’s Talk Again (A Message from the Administrator) The Arlington Fraternity wants to thank Jane Kennedy, Michael Pogue, Kristin Medel, and Sara Wick for willingly coming back as our ABC Managers under these trying times and provide the necessary services to comply with the regulations implemented due to the coronavirus

pandemic. I, as the Administrator, express my appreciation for their dedication to help our Lodge to re-open again in support of fulfilling our Moose Mission AND our LODGE!

As stated in the last Newsletter, the VMA Youth Awareness Committee is working on a revised program presentation and it is almost finalized. The Arlington Fraternity believes in this program for the development of future citizens of our community and in support of awards in possible scholarships for the students in our State; therefore, we will engage in any way possible for our Arlington Fraternity to participation in the program and sponsor at least one student this school year. Where do my Moose Legion dues go? Many members have been asking this question … therefore, part of the dues are distributed as follows:

$ 2.25 to Moosehaven Operations; $ 2.50 for the Moosehaven Serior Medical Fund; $ 0.50 for the operations of Mooseheart’s Camp Ross; and $ 3.25 for International Moose Legion Operations.

Therefore, $ 6.50 goes to our Bull Run Moose Legion #185 for local operations. However, each Moose Legion jurisdiction (e.g. Bull Run Moose Legion #185) is expected to contribute to the specified Annual Capital Moose Legion Project (this year is the renovation of the Mooseheart House of God) and the Youth Awareness scholarships. In addition, Moose Legion jurisdictions provide optional contributions to fund Mooseheart student trips and an annual International President’s Project (this year is a needed transportation van to transport Moosehaven residents to/from doctor & hospital visits safely. It is noted that each of the Moose Legion Committees of the 13 Lodges within the Bull Run Moose Legion #185 are expected to provide support at a prorated amount per Legionnaire in their Lodge for these various fund raisers. They also make contributions to the Mooseheart/Moosehaven Endowment Fund like the Lodges and Chapters.

Bull Run Moose Legion #185 The Bull Run Moose Legion #185 had their Summer Celebration/Conferral on July 26th at the Vienna Moose Lodge #1896 with Special Guests 2020-2021 Virginia Moose Legion Ambassador Jeffery Rohrbaugh and his wife

Cindy. We want to thank Vienna Moose Lodge #1896 for opening their Lodge a few days earlier than their “official” back in business. There were 9 new Legionnaires that were conferred at this Summer Celebration/Conferral, which gives the Bull Run Moose Legion a +16 Legionnaires over the Moose Year so far this year. The only one of the six Moose Legions within the Commonwealth of Virginia that is a “plus” membership over their membership on May 1, 2020.

Did You Know? Some Facts to how to store Vegetables and Fruits (Information taken from 2020 Old Farmers Almanac) Onions and Garlic

Never put onions and garlic (or shallots) in the refrigerator. Store them in a dry, cool, ventilated place. It’s best to store in mesh bags. If you cannot do this, put them in a bowl in your pantry. You may cover with a bag, but make sure there are plenty of ventilation holes. Do not store onions with potatoes, as potatoes excrete moisture and speed up onion decay. Potatoes Never refrigerate potatoes, as it will turn their starch to sugar. Brush off any clinging soil and store in a damp, cool place. If possible, store in the coldest and darkest area of the house, in plastic bins lined with a layer of damp sand. Do not store with apples, as apples give off ethylene gas that will spoil the potatoes.

Tomatoes Store at cool room temperature out of direct sunlight. Never refrigerate fresh tomatoes if you want to keep the fresh off-the-vine taste.

Fund Raiser for Bull Run Moose Legion #185 It was decided this year that the Pick 3 Calendar fund raiser will be for November 2020. The tickets will be distributed in August … that will allow the Moose Legion Committees of the 13 Lodges approximately two months to sell the tickets.

Please support this Fund Raiser!
