OUTSTANDING FOR ALL AWARDS
LEE VALLEY CUP CHAMPIONSHIP
DEAR PARENT/CARERWelcome to our Winter term Newsletter!
As you are aware this is my final newsletter
before I move on to pastures new in
January.
I would like to thank you all for the support
you have shown for the school and me
personally. It has been a privilege to serve
this community. Parent Voice has done a lot
to shape Park View over the years and your
input will always be absolutely crucial to
the success of your child. Despite increased
competition from new schools we have
become ever more popular; the number of
first choices has increased by over a quarter
for the 2014 intake. Thank you for all you
have done to spread the word.
I am very proud of the school I leave
behind. Examination results are the best
they have ever been and far stronger than
anyone would have thought a Tottenham
school was capable of five or ten years
ago, yet I know that Park View is about
so much more. The school passed the
half million ViVO mark within 15 months
of implementation in November, the
house system has been embraced and is
taking hold and the students from John
Loughborough have been welcomed
with open arms. The school won two
out of the eight awards available at the
recent Outstanding for All ceremony,
for Most Inclusive School and a Lifetime
Achievement Award for Ms McQueen.
These are just some examples.
More than anything else I am proud of the
feel around the school and the learning
ethos developed over time. Our students do
aspire, they certainly achieve at school and
I know they will succeed in life. Park View
is arguably the world’s most diverse school
and has become an incredibly harmonious
community. Your child is fortunate to have
the most dedicated and talented group of
professionals I have ever worked with.
I would like to wish my successor Rob
Thomas good luck in the interim period
which is to come and to wish you all a
good break, Merry Christmas to those
of you who celebrate it and a Happy
New Year.
Alex Atherton, Headteacher

TEXTILES TRIPAs we near the end of a long term it is time to pause, reflect and discuss how to make our subject relevant and enjoyable for every student.
One of the things students told us was that
they wanted more trips. We took that on
board and this term we have tried to make
that happen. We want to make sure that
all students go on one Technology trip per
year and so far every year group except
9 has been out. Mr Munro our technician
has been on every trip – so a big thank
you to him!
Ms Beith’s Year 7 Textiles group went to
the Victoria and Albert Museum to look at
the Costume Galleries and research fashion
history. They also went to the Medieval
Court where they drew some interesting
artefacts including an enormous window
dating from before the Fire of London –
so slightly older than Ms Beith herself! Year
10 GCSE Textiles also went to the V and A
to visit the ‘Club to Catwalk’ exhibition as
a starting point for their own GCSE work.
Year 8 students went to the British Museum
with Ms Patel to explore cultural artefacts
and draw inspiration for their pewter cast
pendant project. Ms Patel confessed she is
most excited about the Year 11 Hamleys trip,
where she hopes to meet Santa. The main
focus of this trip is to enable students to
carry out primary research for their
GCSE Product Design course work.

COMPUTER CODE CLUBComputer Code Club now meeting every Tuesday lunchtime in S20.
In addition to the ICT Club running every
afternoon, Josh Hoffman in Year 11 is now
teaching computer code every Tuesday to
interested students. Students are being
introduced to basic programming in multiple
languages, game design and game engine
use. Josh has been interested in writing
computer code since Year 7 and we are very
grateful to him for sharing his expertise.
The first project that he will be undertaking
with the students is coding a programme
that solves quadratic equations. During his
work experience he worked at the interactive
media marketing company, Syzygy, as a web
programmer and wrote the prototype for The
Human Tide Project, an art installation that
was launched at a London art gallery this
month. Interested students should contact
Mr Green or speak to Josh.

A HUGE MOMENTThe Year 7 boys athletics team won a very high profile National calibre athletics competition at the Lee Valley’s Indoor London Cup Championships. The boys’ team fought off stiff competition from 42 other teams from top athletics counties in Essex, Hertfordshire, Inner London and Kent. The girls’ team came 3rd overall which puts them up there amongst the best athletics teams in the country.
Historically Park View do not stand a chance in competitions like this because traditionally the Sports College Schools tend to win these types of finalist stages of competition. However, this year it was the PV Year 7 boys turn to go up and collect some hard earned silverware.
Over 42 schools entered this national standard event and this shows the calibre of athletes we have at PV. Rohann Ernest, Antonio Andrade, an excellent PE Department and an excellent whole school play a part in making things like this happen, where our kids feel like they are winners. Nerves were present with a few boys and girls feeling and being sick, along with the ever present butterflies!! The kids came through it all and were mesmerising.
Let’s make more achievements like this possible.
The names and events students participated in over the two weeks of qualifiers and finals are as follows:

OUTSTANDING FOR ALL AWARDS 2013Park View had a great night at the first
Haringey Outstanding for All awards
ceremony. It was held at Alexandra Palace
with over 250 people in attendance.
Out of eight awards, two were won by Park
View. The Lifetime Achievement winner was
Vinsia McQueen who was described as ‘a role
model for anyone at any level of any school...
absolutely unwavering in her aspirations.’ The
school also won the Most Inclusive School
award and came 2nd for the Most Sustainable
School award. We had more winners and
finalists than any of the other 60 schools.
Very worthy mentions to two organisations
we work with closely. Kulan was in the final
for Community Organisation – congratulations
to St Ann’s Church (and Rev John Wood in
particular) won the award.
Congratulations also to the dancers who
performed a stunning set and Ben Gardiner
as part of the Haringey band.
A DAY AT DOWNING STREETGracing the same hallways as Sir Robert Walpole, Sir Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher, eight Park View students spent the day touring 10 Downing Street as part of a work experience programme with the Cabinet Office.
Students were able to explore the rooms where key decisions have been made for the last three hundred years. Impressed by both the architecture and the artwork on display, students participated in a time-honoured tradition - seeing the chair in which Winston Churchill made such momentous decisions and rubbing the head of his bronze for good luck. The day was an wonderful opportunity for our students to further develop their understanding of the British Government.
The highlight of the day for two students took part in the White Drawing Room, where students sat in the same chairs used by President Obama and Prime Minister David Cameron when in discussion.
Over the last term, students have worked with a variety of different departments within the Cabinet Office ranging from the National Citizenship Service to meeting with those responsible for all the charity work the government participates in. Students will be continuing their participation into the new term.
Ms L Fernback, English Teacher
TABLE TENNIS FINALSThe U13 Park View girls table tennis team have recently taken part in the Jack Petchey North London Team Table Tennis competition. The event took place at the North London
Academy on the 15th November, where the girls played some great matches in order to win
a place in the finals.
The girls Evelyn and Sarah have come a long way since they first started last year, and their focus and commitment is obvious as they won the tournament and will now
represent North London in the Jack Petchey Schools’ Team London Finals on 18 January at East London University.
Well done, and good luck for the finals!
LITERACY IS SIC!Students in Year 10 have embarked on a leadership project (‘The Apprentice’ style!) aiming to raise the reading levels of pupils in KS3. The project is entitled ‘Students In Charge’ (SIC) and it provides KS4 pupils with the opportunity to project manage KS3 student progress and be creative about doing it. Each student team has their own member of staff to manage and teacher responsibilities at designated times. They are gaining invaluable experience that will prepare them for college, university, infinity and beyond!
Pupils in KS3 get the opportunity to be mentored, get excited about their reading through fierce but healthy competitions and hopefully raise their levels beyond expectations.
The rooms are buzzing with activity and the competition between the teams for most progress made is on!
It’s been a highly successful term and the KS4 students have demonstrated excellent organisational skills, tenacity in ensuring attendance and positivity towards our KS3 pupils.
The KS3 pupils have been superb at engaging with their reading and are working really hard to develop their skills.
Park View has some very talented students and really keen readers in our midst!
Ms Jarvis, EMA
YEAR 9 FOOTBALLThe Year 9 football team has had a great start to the year, advancing through five rounds of the National Cup and also progressing in the Middlesex Cup.
The team won the Haringey league in the previous two seasons and reached the last 16 of the National Cup last year. They are aiming to go even further this year. In the 4th round of the National Cup they beat the defending
champions 6-4 in an incredible game and they’re now in the last 32 of the competition. The team has benefitted from having the same, consistent players from Year 7 but also from more recent additions such as Costi Stoica, Rafael Dos Santos and Shadrac Meya Tayeye.
Huge congratulations should also go to Kyle Lynch and Mus Dauti who have this
term signed academy contracts with Crystal Palace and Queens Park Rangers, respectively. Proof that hard work does pay off and that Park View has some talented young footballers.
Chris Hill, Year 9 Football Coach

2013 has been a remarkable year for all involved in Rhythm Sticks. Working
in partnership with Good Move! Music
2013 saw: a highly successful kick-starter
campaign; recording in a world class studio;
student designed album artwork; our album
being archived at the British Library Sound
Archives; listed in September’s top ten
albums in Jazzwise magazine; radio play
on BBC London; professional performance
opportunities: Vortex Outdoors Festival,
Jazz On 3’s Jazz In The Round and then in
November, Rhythm Sticks launched ‘The
Hen’s Tooth’ at the prestigious Barbican
Centre as part of EFG London Jazz Festival –
London’s largest music festival.
Our collectively devised music - heavy on
groove and eccentric improvisation, took
the Barbican by storm. The exuberant
performance was not only a wonderful
celebration of what has been achieved
with Rhythm Sticks over the past five
years but a credit to all the dedicated
student musicians who drive the
ensemble’s creative progression.
Many thanks to all those who have helped
along the way and HUGE congratulations to
all the students involved. We look forward
to more creative adventures in 2014.

NUMERACY WEEK AT PARK VIEW SCHOOLThe week beginning 25th of November was Numeracy week across the school. The main idea was for all teachers to highlight the importance of numeracy in their subjects by doing a little bit of Maths in their lessons.
Numeracy activity days were a huge success. All the students thoroughly enjoyed working out puzzles, piecing together problems, and working in teams to solve difficult brainteasers. This is what Maths is all about – having fun whilst learning.
Year 8s displayed superb team building skills to solve problems with innovative thinking on Maths Puzzle Challenge day. The students encountered a variety of fun, but challenging 3D hands-on puzzle tasks, which
they had to complete in teams. Most challenges lasted for no more than a few minutes, but required each team to work together and carefully develop strategies in order to find a solution.
Year 7s took part in Mind Missions workshop. They had a fabulous time solving logical and creative puzzles. Each team was given a mission to complete and to achieve this they had to work together effectively, solving hands-on challenges requiring a wide variety of mathematical and thinking skills, collecting the pieces of information that enabled them to complete the mission.
Year 9 took part in an Architecture workshop. They had to visualize, design, create, calculate and
analysis through practical activities. The activities required each team work together and carefully develop strategies in order to find a solution.
Everybody learned something new, found something to be proud of, and were delighted to have taken part. Well done all students for a highly successful and enjoyable week.
And finally many thanks to all staff who made the numeracy week very fruitful and rewarding for students and particularly Mr. Abdelmula, Mr. Salem and Mr. Mohamed for helping out organizing the events.
