From the Principal’s Desk

It is such a pleasure to have become a part of the great team here at Albany Primary School! I would like to sincerely thank everyone for making me feel so welcome in my first two weeks here. It is such a joy to see happy smiling faces and

be greeted with cheery hellos from you all.

House Spelling Competition

Last week I was able to see our Year 3-6 students

involved in our House Spelling Competition. The

undercover area was abuzz with excitement as the

teams decided on the best approach to spelling some

very tricky words, in preparation for the interschool

competition later this term. The points for each house

will go towards the House Shield at the end of the

year. You can see the results of the event later in this

newsletter. I can’t wait to see how our teams go at the

interschool competition!

Playground Grant

We are excited to have received a $25000 grant from

the Department of Education under its Playground and

Shade Shelters Funding. We are going to use the

funding to begin the replacement of our old wooden

obstacle course at the bottom of the school. Miss

Mumford is coordinating the project and considerable

groundwork needs to occur before new equipment is

installed. We are currently discussing the types of

obstacle course equipment we would like. Our grant

will only do so much, and this will be an ongoing

project over the next few years to expand the obstacle

course.

Positive Behaviour Support

RISE and be recognised Congratulations to all students who are showing our RISE expectations. Every RISE ticket a student earns is collected, and 5 lucky winners are drawn out at each Junior and Senior Professional Learning Community (PLC) sessions. The winners are listed as RISE Stars in our newsletter and get to spin our chocolate wheel where they could win a canteen voucher, something from the prize box or land on the golden cinema ticket number. Today Blake landed on the golden number winning the cinema ticket. Congratulations Blake!

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) RISE Reminder

PBS Team purpose statement

The PBS team strives to embed a positive and consistent approach to behaviour and learning, reflected by an explicit and clear common language. In making informed decisions we will

value the contributions from staff, students and the wider community. This will foster a sustainable school culture that

encompasses a safe, supportive and engaging learning environment where children have a sense of belonging.

Term 3 Update

The PBS team have developed a Term 3 schedule for teaching expected behaviours. These behaviours are taught through a mini-lesson which has been provided to all staff. The aim of each mini lesson is to have all staff using the same language when teaching expected behaviours, and for all student to know how to show these behaviours. From this, we anticipate we will see improvements in student behaviour and learning.

The Week 5 and 6 PBS focus

We are learning to Be Safe by keeping our hands, feet and objects to ourselves.

This means having them in your personal space.

Whole School RISE Rewards for those who have been

showing RISE expectations

This Friday 23 August, students will be rewarded with 10 minutes extra play at recess.

For the end of term RISE reward on Friday 27 September, students will attend oval games and activities (more information to come).

P & C News Our next P&C meeting will be on Monday 2 September

at 7pm in the staff room. New faces are always

welcome!

Canteen Please remember the Canteen is closed on Mondays. You will need to ensure you provide lunch for your children on that day each week.

What projects should the P&C fund

in 2020? We want your ideas!

The P&C is launching a survey to find out what ideas you

have for what we should fund in 2020 (and potentially

beyond) with our hard earned

fundraising dollars. We want

to know what ideas you have

for projects, resources, training etc.

You can give us your ideas via an

online survey - just follow this link:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MYGBVH7

Alternatively, fill in a paper survey (attached to this

newsletter) and pop it in the P&C suggestion box in the

front office by Friday 30 August. We can't wait to hear

your ideas!

Father’s Day Stall The Father's Day Stall will take place next week

on Thursday 29 and Friday 30 August. Gifts will range

from 50c - $5 with all profits going back to the P&C to

support the school. Students will be able to visit the stall

at different times as follows:

- Kindy start of school on Thursday and Friday

- PP before lunch on Thursday

- Yrs 1-3 lunchtime on Thursday

- Yrs 4-6 lunchtime on Friday

We are also looking for some additional volunteers to

help serve at the stall. You can sign up to help out via

following this link: volunteersignup.org/TX4XB

Thank you in advance for your support!

Walking School Bus We are looking for new volunteer supervisors so that we

can have more children on the Walking School Bus.

Specifically, we could use an extra person on

Wednesday afternoons, but just putting your name

down as an emergency stand in for a regular volunteer

would be a big help. Let us know what you can do and

when you can do it, and we’ll get you busy. Please

contact Denise at [email protected].

Super Science!

‘Stein Club On Tuesday 6 August we ran a ‘Stein Club session after school from 3-5pm

so that group members could complete projects they were working on.

Yann Toussaint (one of the ‘Stein Club parents) came in to demonstrate

how to make a birdhouse for some of the local Albany birds, Andrew Orr

lead another group to make a birdhouse, and other parent helpers assisted

in finding a good location for the birdhouse, as well as supervising different

groups. The children each had a turn using the drill, and another group of

students made a miniature birdhouse using a hammer and nails.

The Soft Plastic Bin group sorted through some bins to ensure the soft

plastic was being recycled, and another group of ‘Steins worked on their

presentation, trying to raise awareness about the endangerment of wild

panda bears.

It was a productive session, and we thank all the parent helpers and

students for making it a fun afternoon.

Plastic Free Week Results

Congratulations to Room 7 with an average of 0.8 pieces of plastic per student for the week!! In second place was Room 2 with an average of 1.3 pieces, and our best senior class was Room 20 with an average of 1.9 pieces per student. All students who brought in 0 pieces of plastic for the week have gone into a draw to win prizes, which will be drawn by the week’s end. Well done to everyone who participated and made changes to their lunch boxes to help the environment. Special thanks goes to Albany Eco House for donating generous prizes, and to parents Ms Drew, Mrs Burgess and Mrs Williams for their assistance with the Plastic Free initiative.

Board Bits

This is the final week of introducing the different

groups involved with Governance at Albany

Primary School, the School Board.

The Board is a group of staff, parents and

community members. It plays an important role in

contributing to good school governance so that

school resources are used efficiently and

community expectations and the school’s

priorities reflect the needs of students. The

functions of the Board are covered by legislation

and include both approval and advisory roles. Some of the matters the Board may make decisions on include fees and

charges, book lists, sponsorship and dress codes. The Board makes these decisions with the Principal who ensures the

decisions adhere to legislative and policy requirements. The Principal also seeks the advice of the Board so as to

understand local community views.

The Board does not intervene in the control or management of the school. This is the role of the principal.

Members of our School Board include:

Parents - Caroline Cameron (Chair), Julie Brooks (Vice-Chair), Joanne Orr (Secretary), Hannah MacKay, Jodie Pol,

Poppie Walker

Staff - Cathy Willis (Principal), Ben Goldsmith, Meegan Mitchell, Breanna Wright, Peta Thobaven

Computers for Kenya

Stein Club students with their birdhouse installed behind them

Have you ever wondered what we do with

our old equipment when we upgrade our

technology? Albany Primary School donates

all of our computers, via a third party, to

schools in need. Recently Schield Centre

Kindergarten and Primary School in Kenya

thanked Albany Schools for their generosity

as they received more than 15 computers for

their students.

School Car Park We remind all families that the School Car Park is a high-traffic area at the start and end of the school day. Many children are waiting in the area and walking to and from vehicles. Please use safe and respectful conduct when you are in this area. We also ask that parents refrain from parking in Staff parking bays as they are not for public use.
