Water Smart Program K-6 Tweed Shire Council is providing the Water Smart Programme created by Royal Life Saving. This will be delivered by Tweed Regional Aquatic Centre. Royal Life Saving Society – Australia works to prevent drowning and facilitate healthy, active lifestyles by equipping all Australians with water safety skills. There is no one reason Australian’s drown, so there is no one simple solution. For that reason, our approach needs to reflect the complexity of the range of issues that result in drowning deaths. Water Smart lessons will comprise two sections, the first part of the lesson is a DVD followed by a PowerPoint presentation. The second practical component is conducted outside. Following this program the Intensive Swimming Lessons for Year 2 to 6 are scheduled to run September 1-12 and a Kinder -Year 1 Water Confidence class for three sessions of Week 7 has been booked. XO Computers are Coming to a Class Near YouDo you recall reading in last week’s Newsletter about the XO Computers arriving in Mrs Ware’s K-1W and what excitement and great learning opportunities this had opened for the boys and girls? Well, the word is there are more classes soon to get their own XO’s (YES one computer for every child!). I wonder which class will be next to receive their XO’s? It is certainly a wonderful time to be a student at Tweed Heads South PS! Imagine when every student in our school has their own laptop to assist with their learning. Sorry kids we still do handwriting lessons!

Big Screen NewsMovie goers attending the Hoyts Cinemas in Tweed City will be reminded of what a great school we have here at Tweed Heads South! With loads of images and a voice over that outlines our great school and the wonderful program we’re hopeful of capturing all the students eligible to come to our wonderful school.

Public SpeakingOn Friday, 8 August we watched another round of Public Speaking Finals. This time it was Stage 2’s turn and we witnessed some spectacular performances from Satira, Kirra-Lea, Jorja, Mia and Harwinder.

The students delivered some very interesting and convincing speeches and so it was once again a very difficult task for our adjudicators Miss Ingrid and Miss Conroy (the Principal of Tweed River High School). Our Stage 2 competition was won by Jorja with a far from average speech about being ‘Just Average’. Runner-up was won by Kirra-lea with a very funny speech about her ‘Dad’ and how he suffers from APS (annoying parent syndrome).

Congratulations to all our public speakers and their parents and teachers for a fantastic effort. Congratulations also goes to the students at our school for their terrific audience skills. Next Friday, 15 August we will have the pleasure of watching students from Stage 3 perform their speeches. All parents, carers, family and friends are welcome.

Canteen NewsThank you to all our lovely mums who helped in the canteen on Career’s Market Day. Your help is greatly appreciated! Thanks also to Chelsea’s parents and to Kei Kei’s mum for their donations of flour, sugar and cake sprinkles. These donations help keep costs down for our students.Jenny and Kelly.

School BankingThe school banking coordinators would kindly like to remind all parents that we are parent volunteers who do not have access to your personal bank accounts. We would like to encourage everyone to participate in this terms lolly raffle by making a minimum deposit of 5 cents. If you have any enquiries please don’t hesitate to contact the coordinators - Rebecca Dixon, Cassie Wall or Melissa Le Hir.These lovely ladies can be found at Friday’s Assembly, P&C meetings and at drop off and pick up times daily.

Antarctica VCOn Thursday 5-6T & 5-6B joined 12 other schools state-wide for a LIVE Video Conference to Casey Station, Antarctica. We spoke to Station Leader Ally and staff Dan and ‘Stew’. They were standing outside freezing as it was -26 degrees Celsius!

In winter they have 18 staff with important jobs including plumbers, electricians, computer technicians, weather experts, diesel mechanics and of course a doctor and chef to look after the staff. In summer the team expands to 100 members with scientists and other specialists. Some interesting facts about Antarctica: • Antarctica is 2 hours behind our time (Eastern Standards Time) • In summer they have daylight for 24 hours, in winter sometimes 1 to 2 hours daily• Temperatures are ALWAYS negative. The warmest temp in summer is -8.2 degrees C• Winds can blow up to 200 km an hour- at times staff have to stay indoors for days• Staff observe seals, birds, penguins, whales and monitor the science projects• Planes and boats can only bring in ‘supplies’ from October to February• When not working staff enjoy skiing, mini olympics, snowboarding, golfing, quad biking• No country owns Antarctica – 50 countries have signed a treaty to agree it is a national reserve that is to be protected for peaceful services and science investigation only. Waste is not to be left behind and no mining is to take place in Antarctica. We were the first people they had spoken to in ages!

Help with your child’s homework in one click The School A to Z app has been created by the NSW De-partment of Education to help parents and their school-aged children, wherever and whenever they have homework and study questions.

It’s available free for Android and Apple mobile devices, and is an essential tool containing:

English A to Z - more than 350 definitions of commonly used English terms from primary and high school. Each word has an easy-to-understand definition based on the current school curriculum, with illustrations and help sheets explaining the rules of grammar.

Maths A to Z - nearly 300 definitions to help you understand what is happening in your child’s classroom plus illustrations, help sheets and ‘how-to’ videos.

Assignments: Does your child have an assignment due soon and doesn’t know where to start? Assignment starters for common classroom topics and themes point you in the right direction.

Technology A to Z: Technology is changing at an ever-increasing pace and it’s not always easy to keep up with the latest trends and terminology. Technology A to Z explains these terms in language you can understand.

Spelling Bee: Does your child need to practise their spelling? The Spelling Bee game provides hours of spelling fun for children of all ages. There are three levels of difficulty and a leaderboard to track progress and improvement. Children can even load their own weekly spelling lists into the game for practise and revision.

Maths Monkey Times Tables: Most children can use some extra help with their times tables, and the Maths Monkey Times Tables challenge makes it fun.

Google School A to Z and go to the conversations tab.

Head licePlease check your child’s hair for nits/lice tonight using the methods recommended in information from NSW Health at http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/publichealth/environment/headlice/treatment.asp
