ST PAUL’S PRIMARY SCHOOL, MT LAWLEY - FROM DARKNESS INTO LIGHT - 1
NEWSLETTER TERM 3 WEEK 9 September 17 2015
PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE
Dear Members of the St Paul’s Community
Congratulations to the students in Year 6 who received the Sacrament of Confirmation last Friday night. They are to be commended for their reverence and sincere preparation for this sacrament. Many thanks go to Mr Jesse Yock and Fr Tim for preparing the children so thoroughly. Our special thanks go to the students in the Liturgical Chorale for their beautiful singing and to all the staff who attended to show their support.
Learning Journeys The children were very excited to share the learning that has been happening in their classes with their parents during the Learning Journeys this week. It is always rewarding for parents to participate in their own child’s classroom journeys and also to take the opportunity to look at what other classes are doing. The variety of activities on offer using iPads and other devices is amazing! Our appreciation goes to the teachers for staying back after school to provide this valuable opportunity for the parents and children.
Coppelia The children in Years 2-6 are looking forward to their excursion to the ballet, Coppelia, next Wednesday 23 September at His Majesty’s Theatre. This ballet is very suitable for children and promises to be a wonderful experience for them.
Great Book Swap Please support the Great Book Swap, which is taking place next Thursday 17 September. The Great Book Swap is a great social justice initiative that celebrates books and reading, and raises much needed funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation's literacy work. The children are asked to bring along one of their favourite books and, for a gold coin donation, they can swap it for someone else's. All the money raised will be donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
Speak Up Competition Final
Congratulations to Isabella Bruining who participated in the oral language Speak Up Competition Final on Tuesday night. Isabella is to be commended for her efforts and out of 145 entries made the top 12! Well done to Isabella and her teachers. An amazing effort.
P&F Meeting The next Parents and Friends meeting will be held at 9.00am this Friday 18 September in the Barbier Hall. Please try to come along and get involved in supporting the school.
End of Term Mass Next Thursday, 24 September, we will have our end of term Mass at 9.15 am. This will be the culmination of our St Vincent de Paul social justice focus for this term. It will also be an opportunity to say farewell to Fr Tim before he leaves for his holiday in the USA. We look forward to his return at the end of Week 3 next term.
Pupil Free Day Friday 25 September Please remember that the last day of this term, Friday 25 September, is a pupil free day and parents will need to arrange alternative supervision for their children.
Commencement of Term 4 Term 4 will commence on Monday 12 October. During this term, the children wear the summer uniform, so please try to get organised for the changeover beforehand.

Padre Pio was born in Pietralcina, Italy on May 25 1887. The 4th child of Grazio Maria Forgione
and Maria Giuseppe De Nunzio He was given the name Francesco, after a brother who died
shortly after birth. From the time he was very young, it was his desire to join the Monks at the
Monastery who ‘wore the beard’. His dream to join the Catholic Capuchin Order of Friars
Minor was realized in 1903. In 1916, struggling with ill health, he transferred to the Friary of
Our Lady of Grace, in San Giovanni Rotondo and there he remained. This humble Capuchin
Priest from San Giovanni Rotondo Italy, was blessed by God in many wonderful and
mysterious ways.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

IT NEWS
This term, the Year 4s undertook a massive IT project based on our Ancient China Theme. It was a step-by-step project
with each step being an assessable standalone piece. However, when all pieces were joined together, we ended up with
one fluid project or journey. Each section of the project was open-ended allowing students to complete their work and
extend themselves as far as they wanted. Here’s what was involved.
THE TASK
Compare and contrast various aspects of life for children living in Ancient China and modern
day Australia.
STEP 1: BRAINSTORMING & PLANNING
The students’ introduction to Ancient China studies included watching kid-friendly documentaries on YouTube. They used
the app, Popplet, to brainstorm ideas and information they found useful or interesting. Using the Internet, students were
able to search for more information, images and resources to assist in completing their brainstorms.
STEP 2: CREATING DIGITAL PRESENTATIONS
Using information that they found in Step 1, the students started collating their data
into topics. The students used the Google apps, Docs and Slides, to create presentations.
Slides is similar to Microsoft’s PowerPoint.
Using the Internet, students were able to search for more information, images and
resources to assist in completing their brainstorms.
STEP 3: SHARING PRESENTATIONS
Arguably the most important step in this project, the students were asked to share their
presentations with the class in the form of an oral presentation. There was no time limit and
students’ presentations could be as simple or as elaborate as they wanted, so long as they
completed all tasks by themselves. Students were assessed by the teacher and their peers
also provided feedback in the form of “Two Glows and a Grow” (two positive feedback
comments, and one constructive comment for an area on which to improve.) Slides
presentations were uploaded to Google Classroom for peer comments (teacher-approved) and feedback.
STEP 4: GOING GLOBAL
The students took comparing and contrasting their lives to that of the Ancient Chinese to in a real and meaningful way
when they captured moments from their lives to share with students in a class in China. The class in China had a
reciprocal agreement where they completed studies on Australia and also filmed aspects of their lives to share with our
class. These videos were uploaded to private YouTube channels that only our classes could access.
STEP 5: HANGING OUT
Our studies culminated in a real-time video conference with our buddy class in China using Google Hangouts. The
students were able to ask and answer questions of each other and share their insights about what they’ve been learning.
THAT’S GREAT! BUT WHAT WAS THE POINT?
This project taught the children a great deal about using technology in a variety of useful and practical ways that have
real world applications for them. They also developed research and problem-solving skills which they will use in future.
The Year 4 students were taught to:
Develop project and time management skills on a step-by-step basis.
Use the latest apps and technology to set and achieve a purpose.
Link learning from previous steps to proceed with their next step.
Share and present their learning, thereby articulating their understanding.
Listen to others and provide warm and cool feedback to others.
Focus and reflect on important aspects of their lives, then capture and share it.
See aspects of another culture and learn that the world they know is not the only way to live. Through this, they
developed respect and understanding for others.
