By this, the Department of Education and Training means planning and managing ways to reduce our consumption of energy and water, minimise waste, use efficient transport and improve grounds and the built environment. At Booral School, we recycle our paper and plastics, turn off lights, heaters and air conditioners when they’re not needed, most of our students travel to and from school by bus and all our rain water is channelled into tanks or dams for reuse. I think we’ve made a good start. Next Friday, as part of our Open Day, we’ll be planting more trees in the playground to enhance our environment and provide habitats for native birds and other animals. In addition to Years 5 and 6 visiting Tea Gardens School on Wednesday, our main focus for Education Week will be on Friday, 6th August. Families and friends of Booral School are invited to attend our special Education Week Assembly at 11:20, where they will be entertained by the school band and choir and each class will present a brief item. After the assembly, you are welcome to visit our classrooms. 1/2 and 5/6 rooms will be ‘open’ from 12-12:30, while Kindergarten and 3/4/5 have scripture lessons and then reversed. Warm, sunny weather has been booked for that day, so why not bring along a picnic lunch to enjoy with your children in the playground at 1pm. Delicious cakes, slices and biscuits will be available from 5/6 with profits to go towards the Year 6 Farewell and gift. In the afternoon, we will be planting 50 young trees and shrubs around the playground, so bring your gardening gloves. The Combined Schools’ Athletic Carnival will be held this Friday, 30th July. Please complete a new permission form for your child(ren) by Thursday, if you haven’t already done so, to assist us with our arrangements. All children are expected to attend the carnival at Stroud Oval and no supervision will be provided at school. As always, parents and families are welcome to join us on the day at Stroud Oval. There is just over one month to go until the finish of the Premier’s Reading Challenge on 31st August. At this stage, fewer than half the children who entered the challenge have completed it and many children have only 2-3 books on their list. It has been a difficult year with our library closed for most of the year, but please remember that Stroud and Raymond Terrace Libraries are available and encourage your child to complete the challenge. Students are working hard in class on their speeches for our Booral Public Speaking Competition. Once speeches have been completed in class, children will be bringing them home to practise, ready for the class competitions. Three speakers from each grade will be chosen to present their speeches at assembly in Week 6 (27/7/10) to determine the winners for each grade. The winners from Years 3-6 will then be competing in the Lower North Coast Public Speaking Competitions later in the term. There will be a brief Captains’ Assembly on Thursday morning to present class awards. Parents and friends are welcome to join us. Ms S Parsonage Relieving Principal
