Year 10B has incorporated HASS Civics and Citizenship and Chemical Science into their Community Access.

In Community Access, the students learned the importance to keeping to their schedule and learned to be flexible should they miss the bus as it could arrive earlier than expected. The students also took ownership on deciding if they ought to top up their Smart Riders.

In Civics and Citizenship, the students visited the Old Court House, sat in through a case at the District Court, learnt the importance of voting and how preferential voting works at the Electoral Education Centre. They also sat in the Legislative Council and the Legislative Assembly chambers on a non-sitting day at the Parliament House, went behind the scenes at the Rockingham Police Station and lastly, to the Constitutional Centre. WOW we have been everywhere!!

In Chemical Science, the students went to SciTech for a CSI Forensic Workshop where they learned to run through the crime details, the suspects and the evidence. They also looked at specialist equipment and they were made aware of lab expectations and safety requirements as well.

The students are indeed privileged to have a first-hand experience at these locations and it was also an eye-opener for them.

Enjoy your term break and stay safe. See you in Term 4.

At Rockingham SHS Education Support Centre the Bush Rangers Program has continued to explore the environment with a focus on our local Wetlands and helping our community to improve the environment for all to enjoy!

Winter Jackets

Bush Rangers have been issued their winter jackets and many of our Bush Rangers proudly wear them. They have also proved helpful in keeping the rain off at times.

Wetland Exploration Excursion

The Bush Rangers have visited two local Wetlands – Lake Richmond and Lake Walyungup. At Lake Richmond the Rangers spent time identifying the different bird species including the Swamp Harrier, Brown Honeyeater, Magpie Lark, Black Swan, Australian Pelican and many others. We spent time listening to the call of the local frogs and explored the board walk discussing the Thrombolites and the potential impact of introduced species (yabbies''') on them. Lake Walyungup provided a desolate salt lake environment with different vegetation and fauna. It was interesting to listen to the Rangers feelings on how they felt moving through this environment.

Re-Cyc-Ology Project Incursion

The Bush Rangers of Rockingham SHS Education Support Centre participated in an amazing incursion conducted by Simon Cherriman called ‘The Re-Cyc-Ology Project’ – A nest-box building. Simon discussed the importance of wildlife conservation and waste management. He illustrated the loss of tree hollows due to land clearing and the impacts for wildlife. He engaged the Rangers in a practical sustainable solution to help animals and birds providing recycled materials to build nesting boxes. In small teams the Rangers worked cooperatively to build the nesting boxes. The Rangers asked many insightful questions about the design of the boxes and what type of bird or animal would use the boxes. Later in the day the Rangers helped Simon install the nesting boxes on our school grounds with the aim to provide habitat and additional learning opportunities.

The Rangers have been monitoring the boxes and record observations of the wildlife found. So far we have Australian Ringnecks living in two boxes, Pink and Grey Galas taking up residence in another and we have had a sighting of a White Cockatoo exploring a box. The Rangers have been very excited and keenly observe these boxes.

Animal Ark Incursion

David and Tom from Animal Ark visited our school on the 24th August bringing in fossils, shells, mini-beasts, frogs and reptiles. Rangers could observe and touch the animals. Many overcame theirs fears and held a giant stick insect, a tree frog, a lizard or a snake. They even had the opportunity to view a venomous tiger snake. [pictures on page 5

Our Conservation Project – Shoalwater Beach Clean Ups - AMDI

Rockingham ESC Bush Rangers have adopted a stretch of beach in the Shoalwater Marine Park to remove Marine Debris. We have continued to complete a further four beach clean ups in the term. In one week the Rangers removed 48 kilograms of rubbish off the beach after the cold front had passed through. They were struck by the sheer number of micro plastics found that washed up.

Snap shot of our statistics for Term 3

125.5 kg Total Kilograms of Rubbish 442 Remnant pieces of plastic 348 Packaging Items e.g. plastic bags, plastic bottles, plastic lids and plastic strapping 123 m Fishing line 79 m Rope 41 Metal Items e.g. aluminum cans, metal bottle caps, lids and ring pulls, and foil) 1 Cylume glow sticks (used in commercial fishing) 4 Tags (used in commercial fishing)

The Rangers have sorted, classified and uploaded their findings to the AMDI national database. Scientist use the information provided by the Rangers to identify the source of marine debris and implement source reduction schemes.

Wetlands Alive

The Rangers spent a day examining Macro-invertebrates at Star Swamp Wetlands with Richard Olive (State Coordinator – Bush Ranger Program). They identified water fleas, seed shrimp, freshwater snails, non-biting midge larva, flat worm, water boatman and a damselfly nymph to name a few. In the afternoon they tested Ph, salinity and water turbidity of Star Swamp to determine if the water was good or bad. The Rangers discussed flora and fauna of the area – watching birds and looking at the different range of trees and wildflowers found in the area. It was a wonderful excursion and we look forward to using the skills learnt for monitoring Lake Richmond in 2018.

A Story by Chloe Watt

On Tuesday 1st of August all the year 10’s, 11’s, 12’s and 13’s travelled on a bus to

visit the old court house and district court. When we arrived we split into two groups my class walked up to the District Court and met Dean who took us through metal detector at the front door before talking us into a room which was set up like a court room. He then told and showed us who sat where and what they had to do. After this we then went into the real court room to meet Chief Justice of W.A. who was sentencing a young 16 year old man for dealing with drugs; the man was fined $1000 . The judge also spoke to us after and explained what he did and told us

not to take drugs. We also had to bow before we sat down and left the court room. When we left the court room we went to the old court house and acted out various crimes with our group I played a lawyer who defending someone. Once we had finished this we all got back onto the bus and went home again

Old Court House Law Museum

On Tuesday the 1st August our

senior school classes visited the Courthouses in Perth as part of the Francis Burt Law Education Program. During our time there we were guided through how our system works regarding the roles of the Judge, Jury and Witnesses play in each case. Some are simple and others end up in a trial. We were taken to the old courthouse and the students were given some scripts in which they role played and reenacted a case. Some fine performances too, we must say!!

We then walked to the District Courts where we had to walk through metal detectors and our

belongings scanned before entry. This was an eye opener for many of our students. Once through security

we were given a brief on the case we were being taken into. The students had to enter the

courtroom, bow to the Judge and sit quietly throughout the proceedings. The students were in the courtrooms for approximately 20 minutes, which gave them a true reflection of proceedings. The charge in both cases was for drug procession. Although the outcome of the cases were completely different with one defendant being given a $5000 fine with no jail time the other defendant was taken away, as he was given a three and a half years in jail.

The students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the knowledge we gained in how our judicial system works.

What next in Term 4, 2017?

All Rangers will explore different species of animals threatened in the wild with a focus on Western Australian Animals. We will visit the Perth Zoo and host two Incursions Birds of Prey and Saving Our Threatened Species. The Rangers will continue with their efforts to remove Marine Debris from the environment and participate in an Adventure Excursion – Low Ropes, Giant Swing and Flying Fox at Fairbridge.

I would like to thank all the staff; your support has been appreciated. I would like to congratulate all the Bush Rangers on their wonderful efforts in Term 3 and wish you all a wonderful and safe holiday. R Nixon Bush Rangers Unit Leader

A Story by Dylan Eastaughffe

The Yr 11s went to St George’s Cathedral in Perth. We travelled by bus and train to get there which went without a hitch. When we arrived we went into the Cathedral where there was a loud organ playing in the church.

We then spoke to the head priest; he was talking about the history of the church. There was a lot of colour and a lot of carvings on the walls.

Jessica and Mr.Cook dressed up in priest clothes. Then we walked up 55 stairs to ring the bells. There were 8 bells to ring. The boys rang the heavy bells and then we went back down the stairs. After our visit we went to lunch—Curtis and I visited the Rock Candy Store, then we all headed back to school. It was a good trip!

The Old George Cathedral

On Tuesday 29th August the year 12 and 13

students caught public transport to West Perth and

went to the Constitution Centre. We met with our

guide, Nigel who taught us how to vote and different

aspects of government. We learnt that every

Australian citizen over 18 has the right to vote, but

you can only vote once in an election. They have a

hologram who explains the voting process. Her

name was Vivacious and she was really cool.

Important Information from Carers WA

Skills West Expo 2017

On Friday the 18th of August the year 11, 12 and 13 students went to the Perth Convention Centre to see what was on offer in Education & Training after year 12.

There were many TAFE and Universities offering vast training

opportunities. There were students from various TAFE sites giving away “free samples” of their skills that they have learnt.

I gratefully took advantage of what was on offer just to trial it.

I trialled my nails being painted, my eyebrows being tinted and a very relaxing back, shoulder, neck and head massage. I really enjoyed the massage and might pursue learning this skill later in life.

CONGRATULATIONS TO KONNER DONAGHY FROM YEAR 7 FOR CONSISTENTLY SHOWING RESPECT IN THE PLAYGROUND AND IN THE CLASSROOM. WELL DONE ON WINNING THE MAJOR CHOOSE RESPECT AWARD WHICH WILL BE PRESENTED AT NEXT ASSEMBLY IN TERM 4

Yr 12 Student, Oscar Zanoli has shown his outstanding planning, organisational and IT skills As part of his Work Placement in the Administration office at the school. He was given the task by WPL Coordinator, Ms Mason to organise a school raffle [from the ground up]. He quickly got to work researching and choosing an organisation that he would like to donate the proceeds of the raffle to, which was the RSPCA. He then started creating and designing a flyer, raffle tickets and then began his advertising campaign to staff and students at the school.

He originally made 60 x $1.00 tickets but very quickly had to make up more due to selling out fast. [In total he sold over 90 tickets]. Oscar was also successful in persuading people in and around the school to make donations along the way to his worthy cause. He raised over $122.00; of which the RSPCA are very grateful to receive.

“We’re extremely appreciative of the effort Oscar has made to raise funds for animals in need,” said Maree Daniels, Executive Manager Community Engagement RSPCA WA.

“RSPCA WA relies heavily on the generosity of the community to sustain its animal protection work, and without the support of caring and compassionate people like Oscar, we simply wouldn’t be able to do what we do,” Ms Daniels added.

“It’s always encouraging to see young people interested in animal welfare – hopefully other young people will be inspired by Oscar and do something good for a cause that they are passionate about,” Ms Daniels continued.

Ms Mason agreed that this was an outstanding effort shown by Oscar and he should be very pleased with the outcome.

The raffle prize of a Family Gift Voucher to the Peel Zoo [which was kindly donated by a School Staff Member] was drawn on Wednesday lunchtime at the school and the winner was Ms Glasgow, Yr 7 Teacher.

Work Place Learning Naragebup – Rockingham Regional Environment Centre

Joel Woodbridge Yr 13 Shane Lambeck Yr 12 Michelle Strickland Yr 11 Since April this year, three of our students have been working each Friday at Naragebup as part of their Workplace Learning program.

Naragebup was established as an education and resource facility for the community, to enable a greater understanding of environmental issues and sustainable lifestyle choices.

Please click here website to view more of the amazing work they do.

The students have learnt a number of new skills at centre all while enjoying themselves in the outdoors. Joel and Shane have used many different tools to help restore outdoor furniture and assist with general repairs and maintenance throughout the centre. Their positivity and maturity when learning new tasks and safety procedures has been outstanding.

Michelle started off her placement adding a few decorative touches to the garden and re-organising the inside displays. Her gardening skills have improved and will continue to do so with the purchase of our very own “RSHS ESC” garden plot. Now Michelle can go wild with planting!

The students have all had the opportunity to be involved with and learn more about the native plants and animals in the area and why the conservation of precious resources is so important.

For Joel and Shane the WPL program finishes at the end of Term 3, so congratulations boys on your fantastic efforts towards Workplace Learning. For Michelle the adventures will continue throughout Term 4 and we can’t wait to see what you produce in the garden.

Thank you to our Local Businesses

Staff and Students at Rockingham SHS Education Support Centre rely on local businesses in and around our Community to support our students in gaining a realistic approach and understanding of the world of work. Students gain skills that may assist them in seeking employment when they leave school or even on to further education .

We would like to sincerely thank each and every local business who have taken on our students with Work Place Learning. We look forward to continuing with your ongoing support into 2018.

Strengthening our Ties in the Community

Four students who are studying either Certificate I or II in Hospitality have created a Pop-Up Café that they run and share with the residents of Gracehaven Care Facility in Rockingham. Each week prior to leaving school, students practise their skills by preparing afternoon tea and ironing their aprons and tablecloths so that everything looks very special for the residents.

Students from Yr 7 through to Yr 13 assisted by colouring in placemats that really bring a ‘pop’ of colour to each table.

The students really like having a chat with the residents and look forward to participating in this venture for the rest of the term.

BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE-Stars in more ways than one !!

Not only are the students above delivering a great service for the residents of Gracehaven Care Facility—They are also stars in the making. Channel 7s Today Tonight Show visited our school to film and interview the students preparing and packing morning tea, and ironing and folding their aprons and table cloths. They then joined students and the residents of Gracehaven to see how it all works. The students deliver such a great service and it was enjoyed by all. The film crew were amazed at how well our students connect with the residents enjoying a good chat whilst serving up a beautiful morning tea. The filming should go to air before the school holidays...keep an eye out!! AUTOGRAPHS ARE FREE! :)

and self-esteem, resume writing, social media, personal grooming and presentation skills. The project is funded through KIC’s Workforce and Education Committee and developed in partnership with 19 of the high schools in the local area that form the KIC Partnership

Great Work Layth

On the last Friday of Term 2 [Post Newsletter] Layth Wilkes assisted

the Rockingham Senior High School Library in designing and

constructing a 1:1 scale replica of Alcatraz Prison cell for the purpose

of being used as the back drop for an “Escape from Alcatraz” display.

Layth had to work from a photograph to mark out the design full size

onto cardboard painting the prison walls in the colour that was used in

the real prison. He did this amazing job in only 5 hours and used this

last day as a break from the normal Library routine. Layth completed

this display whilst completing his work place learning in the main

school library of RSHS. FANTASTIC WORK LAYTH!! Alcatraz display by Layth Wilkes

Book Week was held on Friday 25th August and was a great success. Students [and staff] were able to dress up as their favourite ‘super hero’ or a favourite book character for a gold coin donation. As well as being a successful fun day, the total of $197.40 was raised for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Thanks to the parents/carers who help their children get ready for events such as these, it makes for a fun day at school whilst raising money for various charities along the way. Congratulations Jessica for getting an honourable mention and taking out a prize on the day! Thanks again to Mr Kaine Cook for helping to organise this event and ensuring the money reached it’s destination. :)

We cleaned BBQs on a really cold and windy day in Mandurah. I loved it! I would like to consider doing this this as a job next year. Next time I will wear a jumper though!! Sheldon Bransby We cleaned the BBQ for the people that live in and around the area of Mandurah. It was repetitive and I would not want to do this as a full time job, but it was an experience. PALS Aboriginal Art Project

Jade Dolman, Aboriginal Artist visited the school on 24th August with a pre-designed canvas outline drawing. This was designed especially for the RSHS Education Support Centre including the dolphin as part of the school’s logo and the three meeting points representing the school’s Vision, Values and Priorities.

Each Year group rotated through in different time slots adding their touches to the painting [including staff]. What a great effort from everyone!

The project has been funded by the PALS Program—Department of Aboriginal Affairs and will be an introduction to Aboriginal Studies in HASS for Term 4.

The artwork has been finished and will be framed to possible hang in the new Administration Building which is due for completion in November 2017.

SMILE—YOU HAVE BEEN SNAPPED! [ and we love smiling faces]

On Wednesday I went to a trial at Intelife and cleaned the BBQs in different locations around Mandurah. It was fun working with different people. Joel Woodbridge
