ST PAUL’S PRIMARY SCHOOL, MT LAWLEY - FROM DARKNESS INTO LIGHT - 1 NEWSLETTER TERM 1 WEEK 8 March 26 2015 PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE Dear Members of the St Paul’s Community Annunciation Mass Today the Year 4 and Year 5 students attended mass in honour of the Feast of the Annunciation. This special feast reminds us of how Mary accepted willingly God’s holy plan to be the Mother of our Lord and the mother of all. Year 6 Camp I heard from Mr Yock yesterday informing me that they were all having a wonderful time at camp. We look forward to their return and hearing about their adventures and the challenges they had to endure. It is an opportunity for these students to bond with their peers and learn to be accepting of each other. Once again we thank Mr Yock and Mrs Waller for committing their own time away from their families, as they support and provide the Year 6 students with this wonderful experience. 2016 Kindy Enrolments We will be commencing the interviewing process for 2016 Kindy (4 Year olds) in Term 2. If you have a child already attending St Paul’s and you have not yet completed an application form for a younger sibling (turning 4 before June 2016 and eligible to commence 4 year old Kindy in 2016), please register your interest at the office as soon as possible and complete an application form. Please remember that it is the parents’ responsibility to inform the school when their younger children are ready to commence Kindy, as we do not automatically know this information. Places in the Kindy program are limited and it would be very unfortunate if your child missed out on a place because you forgot to register them for enrolment in time. Harmony / Mission Day

It was a sea of excitement last Friday, as all year levels from Pre-Primary to Year 6

participated in Harmony day activities to raise money for Caritas. Each class was

responsible for setting up and running a stall.

There was a great vibe walking around the stalls, with everyone getting into the spirit

of the occasion. A special thank you to the parents of the junior classes who helped

run the stalls, especially our hairdresser mums! $827.85 was raised for Caritas.

SMART WORDS

Smart Words author, Julie Bradley, visited classrooms from Pre-Primary to Year 3 last week , to assist the teachers in implementing the ‘Smart Words’ lessons effectively and efficiently. Julie was able to demonstrate best practice as well as help facilitate the group work sessions. Teachers are continually refining and developing their pedagogy to ensure the students at St Paul’s get the best spelling tuition possible.

This week the Year 6 students ran a World Issues EXPO in the Barbier Hall for the children and teachers in Years 3-5. Teams had to prepare a presentation, which included a poster, powerpoint/keynote and interactive iPad book. Groups had to impress the students, who had been given tokens to place in the team’s containers that they thought outlined the issue best and provided the best solution to the problem. The students used powerpoint/keynote presentations and interactive books on the iPads. These features allowed the them to include video, audio, photos, drawings and text as part of their oral performance to convince their fellow students to vote for them. It was a great opportunity to involve the upper primary in this learning activity and hopefully the students went away a little more knowledgeable on topics of importance to them. Congratulations went to the Cyber Bullying team who were victorious in a very close contest. Well done Year Six students!

SCHOOL PHOTOS

Academy Photographers will take our school photos again this year. The school photo dates are Thursday 7 and Friday 8 May, this is week Three of Term Two. Can you please ensure all students are in correct winter uniform for these dates.

More information will be distributed closer to the date.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data- School students with Disability

Schools across Australia are taking part in a new National Data Collection of school students with disability.

From 2015, this information will be collected in every school across Australia, every year.

All Australian governments have agreed to this collection. The information will enable them to better target support and resources and in turn benefit students with disability.

The new data collection will record students who have been identified by a school team as meeting the definition of ‘disability’ under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and provided with an adjustment to their learning.

Personal and confidential information will NOT be given and student names will NOT be recorded as part of the data collection submitted.

Parents and care givers need to inform the school in writing by Friday 1 May if they do not wish their child to be considered in this data collection.
