The 2nd Annual Alvin Art Walk was held on Satur-day, May 6th. The Art Walk began with the unveil-ings of new art installations performed by Alvin High School (AHS) students at the Alvin Public Li-brary. Under the guidance of AHS teacher Karin Stensrud, students created and installed the 2nd tile mural at the library. There was also an unveil-ing of the newly painted traffic box at the corner of Sealy Street and Hood Street that was performed by students, led by AHS teacher Daniela Koontz. The decorative yarn displays in the downtown Alvin area were installed by students under the direction of AHS teacher Jonna Lee. Thanks to the dedication and vision of Alvin High School students and teachers, the City of Alvin continues to be able to appreciate unique and beautiful art pieces throughout the community.

Following the unveiling presentation, the 2nd Annual Alvin Art Walk featured over 30 local art vendors along Gordon Street, ranging from Willis Street to Adoue Street. Under the leadership of Mary Smith, the Alvin Area Art Society did a phenomenal job in attaining and organizing each vendor to create an eclectic array of art pieces on display and available for purchase. One particu-lar artist remarked that she had hoped to sell all of her art pieces by 3:00 p.m. and she was well on her way, with only two paintings remaining at noon. The Alvin Art Walk featured an extensive range of art pieces, including paintings, photography, pottery, wood carving, stainless steel sculptures, crafted jewel-ry, and much more. The event was an overall resounding success, and would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication exhibited by the Alvin Area Art Society and Alvin Independent School District teachers and stu-dents.

The Alvin Police Department would like to remind everyone that scam artists are hard at work every day of the year. Just when you think “it can’t happen to me”, you find that someone is attempting to victimize you or a loved one. The types of scams that are being committed and attempted seem to be all-encompassing: IRS collection scams, home improvement scams, family member needing money in an emergency scams, failure to report for jury du-ty scams, arrest warrant scams, banking and credit account scams, jackpot winning scams, the list goes on. These scams can be avoided by remembering some basics: never send or give money to anyone without first verifying the claim(s), never give money to receive money, nev-er share personal information (including account numbers and pass codes) unless you initiated the contact and have verified who is receiving the information, never pay for goods or service up-front and never succumb to pressure to decide “right now”. A clear indication that some-one is trying pull a scam is if they ask you to purchase pre-paid cards or gift cards then to pro-vide them with the card number and pin number so they can access the card. Reputable busi-nesses/entities do not and will not request these forms of payment. This is not the only form of payment that scam artists ask for, but it is currently a favorite. It is an unfortunate fact that many of these crimes go unreported because of a false sense of shame the victim feels once they discover they’ve been scammed. Remember, the best defense is simply to know that scam artists are always at work, and you or your loved ones could be the next target.
