I just sat down to write this article and I saw that several in the club got together for a drive the day after Thanksgiving. When I sat down I didn‘t know what I was going to write about, but this event brings up a couple of subjects I was wanting to touch on.

The first is our SLTOA mailing list. Thursday was an awesome day for a drive. This would have been the perfect event to put out to the SLTOA mailing list. But why bother. Most people in the club still don‘t take advantage of signing on and using it.

It is very simple. Anyone who signs on to the list (by providing an email address) will be a member of the SLTOA email mailing list. Then any member can send one email to [email protected], and everyone on the list will get a copy of that email in their email in-box. A sunny day with a cool evening was on hand for the MG-sponsored Hallow-een Drive and Party. A big round of applause to the rally organizers Mike and Stefanie Barnes! Starting in Fen-ton at Highway 30 the rally went south and the colors were nice considering the warm and dry weather we have experienced this year. It is an interest-ing challenge when the rally directions are left and right turns but no distances – one has to really trust the rally mas-ters. I did enjoy the historical com-ments on the rally sheet about the route.

The roads were two-lane and at one point, Thomas Bridges intended to pull to the side of the road only to discover a low spot. His 1972 MGB bottomed out. The cross member of the frame was sitting on the ground. Several

people lifted the car back on the road. Fortunately no one was injured

and the car suffered only minor scrapes which can be easily re-painted.

A few of us noted if one were behind Lee Fox in his smoking hot 1973 Tri-umph TR6, a gas mask was needed because of the smoke emitted from the car when Lee decelerated down hills.

A thank you goes to John and Carol Mangles who hosted the evening party. The BBQ was excellent complemented by two tables filled with wonderful side dishes and appetizers, not to mention desserts. A superb cheesecake by Sally Dohogne was a hit.

I saved the costumes for last. I love the creative ideas. Costumes included: The Identity Thieves, Quarter Pound Burgers (aka Rich and Barb Berger), Superman, Pirates, Blind Referee, and the American gothic couple of 1930.

Congrats to member TSgt Steve Hunt (far left) on the recent completion of his deployment to the sandbox. During his assignment he somehow managed to get copies of Spitfire & GT6 from the NASS, as seen here with SSgt Danielle Cochran, SrA Jacqueline Shelton and SrA Priscilla Dinh. Nothing like keeping informed!

Condolences also to Steve. Upon his return to ConUS he received orders to Nellis AFB, near beautiful downtown Lost Wages, NV. Hey, it‘s a tough job but someone‘s gotta do it (for the re-cord, the local group out there is the British Auto Club of Las Vegas).

Christmas Musical Show! Consider joining us as we drive to Steelville‘s Meramec Music Theatre for their annual Christmas Musical show on Saturday afternoon, December 10th at 2:00PM. We will again have front row seats for this musical which features classic and contem-porary music, played and sung by local folks. Cost per seat is about $18.00 and payable at the door. As in previous visits to the theatre, we will gather at our house here in the Hillsboro area, Saturday morning around 10:30AM, after which we will drive to Steelville via Potosi (your car of choice). Meeting Notes

15 November 2011

British Car Week Kick-Off In Little Rock British Car Week 2012 festivities will start on 30 May 2012 at the Clinton Presidential Library, Little Rock, AR. British car owners who make the trip will get lunch and a tour of the li-brary, followed by a drive to Hot Springs for the national meet. We will be led to Hot Springs by a squadron of Triumph Spit-fires from all over the country.

Since the visiting exhibit at the museum will be a tribute to the world champion St Louis Cardinals, we thought it would be great for the St Louis British Car Clubs to serve as hosts for the event. Different clubs from different states are taking on roles as host clubs for various British Car Week events.

In the meantime, the web site will soon be updated to reflect more information about our day at the Clinton Library. We hope the St Louis British car clubs can get together and host this event so that we can post this event online. Cheers!

November‘s meeting found the SLTOA faithful gathered at Mike Duffy‘s, a locally famous (and quite busy) establishment in historic downtown Kirkwood. The club managed a turnout of 30 (!) including our two international men of mystery, Andy Stark – back from the Republic of Korea, albeit briefly – and Steve Hunt, who had just returned from an Air Force deploy-ment to the desert.

Sad to say, Steve announced that he was now completing his tour at Scott AFB and after the turn of the year would transfer to Nellis AFB on the northeast side of Las Ve-gas, home of the USAF Warfare Center and the world famous Air Force Flight Demon-stration Squadron, aka The Thunderbirds. He said something about working with F-22s

and F-35s. Everyone expressed their sorrow at his imminent departure and wished him well on his pending move to far southern Nevada. Steve responded that he was giving up a Scott Christmas party in favor of SLTOA‘s even on the 2nd of December, ―…because ours is a lot more fun.‖

Treasurer Don then provided an update on the RSVPs for said party and, not surprisingly, a few more signed up on the spot (more importantly, they also provided cash on the spot), adding to the 20 he‘d already received. The menu at the Feasting Fox has been upgraded and, as always, the club is subsidizing a portion of the meal cost. And, as per usual, the club‘s invited its friends from the Austin Healey and MG clubs. On a final note, everyone was alerted that Don‘s address as printed on the first page of the November Exhaust Notes was incorrect; his address is 5457 Potomac St, St Louis, MO 63139. As a result of the grievous misprint, the club secretary/newsletter underwent a substantial amount of abuse from his friends in the club, richly deserved…

Don also noted a letter the club received from The Band-standers, the parent support organization for the Lindbergh High School Bands. Bandstanders treasurer Rebecca Pavelka thanked the SLTOA for its donation of $25 to the Robert Spiegelman Endowment Fund, in memory of former club mem-ber and legendary band director Robert ―Ron‖ Spiegelman.

The holidays are fast approaching -- hope you attend the Tri-umph and/or MG holiday parties – both are great fun.

Moving on to the club account, Don noted a starting balance (18 October) of $2623.31. Income totaled $175 for dues; ex-penses included $260.00 to Limited Visual for the SLTOA web-site, $4.04 to Creig Houghtaling for the newsletter and a bank service charge of $.30, for a total of $264.34. The net result was a mid-November balance of $2533.97.

Due to the Christmas party, SLTOA will not hold a meeting in December. After some debate between Nicoletti‘s and a return to Mike Duffy‘s, the club agreed to hold the January meeting at the latter (question from the floor: ―Will they let us come back?‖ Response: ―If you tip ‗em good‖).

Next up, coming events, starting with February‘s Polar Bear Run. With the Super Bowl scheduled for Sunday 5 February, the club will make its annual cold-weather-top-down run the following Sunday, 12 February. Some debate ensued over holding the event on Saturday or Sunday; the general consen-sus was use Saturday to get the cars ready and make the drive the following day. Tom and Anna Stark graciously offered their casa as the site for the post-Polar Bear party. This year they‘ll whip up a batch of paella, club members are asked to bring side dishes and desert. That brought a question from the floor, i.e., ―What about haggis?‖ Someone in the group replied, ―Better yet, how ‗bout haggis on a stick?‖ No word yet on whether anyone‘s actually going to provide the sheep…Event coordinator/ route planner Mark Morgan, having recovered from the earlier abuse, agreed to publish the start point in the December Exhaust Notes with the route to follow, but pointed out that anyone who saw billboards indicating ―Tucumcari To-night‖ probably will have gone too far.

The end of May brings a massive, major LBC event in Arkan-sas, the first-ever British Car Week National Meet. The events start on 30 May at the Clinton Library immediately east of downtown Little Rock overlooking the Arkansas River and event organizer Barry Harrison is offering up the host duties for the opener to the St Louis Brit car clubs; turns out the mu-seum‘s traveling exhibit that week will consist of a salute to the World Series Champion St Louis Cardinals (appropriate ap-plause and cheers, except from the one Minnesota Twins fan in the group). Mark‘s agreed to serve as event coordinator for

Meeting Notes (Continued from page 3) SLTOA and will contact the other clubs in St Louis/Metro East concerning lining up participation in the opener. The main events will take place at Hot Springs National Park, monitor the Exhaust Notes over the next several months for details.

Old business? None. Future business? More discussion followed on the other club‘s parties, including the Gateway Austin Healey gathering on Saturday, 3 December and the MG Club of St Louis ―Christmakah‖ festivities on Saturday, 14 January. Y‘all come.

With the membership having exhausted all further possibili-ties for discussion as well as the requisite large amounts of good food, ale and other libations, Prez Creig rang down the curtain at 8:22 PM.

wants to reply to everyone on the list he can click reply-all and one email will go back to the originator and another will go to [email protected] (everyone on the list). But the trick is, a person has to actively go on line to sign up. So if you are one of those persons who has not signed up, go to www.sltoa.org and on the left you will see a link called ―Mailing List.‖ Click on that and follow the instructions to sign up.

As of the time of this writing, the SLTOA Christmas party is still almost a week away. But by the time you read this, the party will be history. So the next big event will be the Polar Bear Run. At our last meeting we set a date and got a volun-teer (Mark Morgan) to map the route and Ann & Tom Stark generously offered to let us end at their house for eats. So watch the newsletter for details. Come to the meetings to hear more. Our next meeting will be in January in Kirkwood back at Mike Duffy‘s.

In March we will elect a new president. That will complete my 2-year term. I‘m very big on getting new people with fresh ideas and fresh energy in. So start thinking about who you would want.

See you at the Christmas party, or the January meeting, or at the Polar bear run. - Creig

race in the X1 (the open-top GT40), followed by Walt Hansgen and Mark Donahue in a Ford GT Mk II.

In 1968, Triumph entered the Pete Brock-designed TR250K at Sebring. While the full story of the car will serve as the subject for another article, Kastner and Brock felt Triumph needed a shot in the arm vis a vis styling and aero-dynamics, particularly when competing against other makes like the Por-sche 911. Sadly, Triumph never bought off on the concept but the one-off TR250K, driven by Bob Tullius and Jim Dittemore,

managed to lead for three leaps before retiring with suspension problems. Joe Siffert and Hans Hermann took the race in a Porsche 907.

In 1970, Kas left Triumph Competition and formed Kastner-Brophy Racing with John Brophy. An advertising executive, Brophy held extensive experience in SCCA club racing, includ-ing a C Modified championship in 1962 in a Devin SS-Corvette. According to the Triumph Sports Owners Association, the two planned to serve as competition consultants for British Leyland while also racing Triumphs and other cars in SCCA events.

They started working on three new Triumphs, plus a Lola T192 for Formula 5000 competition. Al-most immediately, Kastner and Bro-phy loaned the open-wheel Lola to George Bignotti for use by Al Unser in the Questor Grand Prix, held at the Ontario Motor Speedway on 28 March 1971. Unser didn‘t finish the event, which featured twin 100-mile heat ―challenges‖ between F5000 and Formula 1; Mario Andretti won both races in a Ferrari 312B, followed by Jackie Stewart in a Tyrell 001. Afterwards, Kastner recruited Jim Dittemore – one of his regular Triumph drivers – to handle the Lola. Dittemore managed to place first in the USAC-sanctioned ―Seafair 200‖ at Pacific Raceways/Kent in 1971, but otherwise had a fairly rough year in F5000 competition.

Another 1971 project involving the preparation of a Triumph Vitesse for the SCCA‘s Trans-Am series also proved problem-atic. Kas added a 2 liter GT6 engine fitted with three Weber carbs to the rather funky sedan but driver Carl Swanson man-aged only one finish, an 11th place at Road America in July. The car DNFed at Olathe, Riverside and Laguna Seca, primar-

Backwards Glance (Continued from page 8) ily due to engine failures and problems with the tires. After Triumph de-cided to not i m p o r t t h e Vitesse, the racing program died and Kast-ner and Brophy sold the car. It now races in vintage events.

Kas later managed Can-Am and Indy car teams, including a tour with Roy Woods Racing as vice president and general manager. In 1986 he became the National Motorsports Man-ager for Nissan, followed by a promotion as vice president of Nissan Performance Technology, Inc (NPTI). He led the team of Geoff Brabham-driven Nissan GTPs which took four IMSA manufacturer‘s and three driver‘s championships during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Over the years, Kastner has written a series of books, includ-ing several covering Triumphs he‘s known. His latest book, Kas Kastner’s Triumphs: Race Cars, Street Cars and Special Cars, is now out: 252 pages and over 500 photos with stories of various projects around the world, plus a detailed section on his work in building a GT6 racer. The book‘s available directly from Kas at 1611-A South Melrose Dr #281, Vista, CA 92081, for $47.50. Ordering information on this and his other books is available at http://www.kaskastner.com/kasbooks.html.

Otherwise, he continues to dispense racing and vehicle preparation advice from his perch in southern California and regularly serves as grand marshal at events, including annual presentations of the Kastner Cup to a top Triumph racing driver in club or vintage races. In 2010, the UK‘s Keith Files (1963

TR4) took the Cup dur-ing a vintage event at Heartland Park Race-way in Topeka, Kansas. Jerry Barker received the award at Laguna Seca in 2011, driving a 1963 Herald.

The tradition will con-tinue in the spring, when Kas serves as grand marshal at the 2012 Speedfest at the Classic

Motorsports Mitty (yeah, that‘s a mouthful) at Road Atlanta. The event runs 27-29 April at the track in Braselton, Georgia, and will salute 60 years of Triumph sports cars in America and 50 years of the Triumph Spitfire.

And Finally….

Backwards Glance: Kas Kastner

No, this isn‘t a memorial or commemorative article. The leg-endary RW ―Kas‖ Kastner (the ―RW‖ remains a state secret) is still quite alive and kicking. And, not surprisingly considering his background and accomplishments, he remains a popular presence at vintage racing events, particularly those which feature LBCs. Just remember, while ―Kas‖ is primarily associ-ated with Triumphs and other Brit brands, he also built quite a record with other cars and in several different varieties of auto racing.

Kas grew up in the Bata-via, New York, went in the Army after high school and did a tour at Fort Car-son, Colorado. As a re-sult, after he left the ser-vice he moved back to the mountains, finding em-ployment in Salt Lake City as automotive service manager. He got his initial start as a driver and engi-neer through racing and

modifying MG TDs, but after his dealership received a Triumph franchise, switched to a TR2. Between the TR2 and a follow-on 1958 TR3A, Kastner won several races, culminating in the 1959 Class E championship with the California Sports Car Club and an SCCA national title. He also served as the chief in-structor for the California Sports Car Club at Riverside Race-way.

With the introduction of the TR4 in the United States, Kas received three for the 1963 12 hours of Sebring. By now working as a service manager in Gardena, Los Angeles County, he stopped driving at the behest of Standard-Triumph and moved into car preparation and team management. The

driving team he put together for Se-bring consisted of the following driv-ers: Peter Bolton, Bob Cole, Ed Diehl , Charl ie Gates, Bruce Kell-ner, Mike Roths-child, Jim Spencer and Bob Tullius. They wound up placing 1st, 2nd and 4th in the 2.5 GT class and 22nd, 24th and 35th overall, out of 65 entries in the 1963 enduro.

Later in 1963, Standard-Triumph named Kastner as its direc-tor of competition, with Bob Tullius initially serving as the pri-mary driver. They took the SCCA‘s E Production crown and, after the SCCA booted the car up a level to D Production, won that class twice at the national run-offs. They also entered three Spitfires in the 1965 Sebring 12-Hour Grand Prix of En-durance race. Jim Hall and Hap Sharp won the event in a Chaparral 2A, despite legendary rains which turned the track into a swamp and caused several accidents; the Triumphs fin-ished 29th (Ed Barker/Duane Feurehelm/Mike Rothschild) and 30th (Bob Tullius/Charlie Gates), with one car (Peter Bolton/Mike Rothschild) DNFing.

The team returned for the 1966 Sebring event with four TR4As, sweeping the top three spots in the GT2.5 class with drivers Bill Pendleton/Steve Froines (19th overall), Dick Gilmar-tin/Mike Rothschild (23rd) and Canadians Ludwig Heimrath/Craig Hill (26th). Ford‘s Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby won the
