We Will Eat About 12:30 pm. Come Early and Help Set Up.

No Board Meeting • No Brag Plants • No Plant Sales • No Plant Exchange

❄ Holiday Party ❄ ❄ 2012 ❄

Eleanore Hewitt will be coordinating the party this year (she’d be happy to pass the torch if anyone wants it!). If you have any questions, suggestions, offers of help or tranquilizers, please feel free to give her a call at home 760-753-3651, or on her cell 760-412-2182. Or email: [email protected]. If you didn’t sign up and wish to bring something, just give her a call.

As is traditional, the Club will be providing the main entree of turkey (yes, there will be more dark meat than white!) Plates, cups and cutlery will also be provided.

Since the Senior Center has virtually no appliances, we are in need of coolers for both the cold and hot stuff. One of Eleanore’s friends showed her a trick with foil-wrapped bricks heated in the oven – they keep food hot for hours! Any hot trays you may have tucked away in your back cupboards will be much appreciated as well. Don’t forget the cords!

The set-up crew should arrive ready to work by 11:00 am. There are tables to set and decorate, and the room could use some holiday cheer. We would appreciate people bringing cut greens or Christmas decorations so we can make the hall as festive as possible. Pine, juniper or pyracantha would be great – as well as any succulent material you think would fit into the seasonal theme – like Jade if it’s in bloom. Please bring them early enough to be used in the decorating.

We welcome the spouses or SOs of all our members to the party. I know we would be delighted to meet them.

PLEASE – remember to put your name on ALL serving utensils and dishes. We would hate to have anything get lost in the clean-up shuffle.

We didn't have a lot of sign-ups in November. I sure could use some help with the food! I have plenty of turkey, there's gravy in the works, and I think some extra stuffing this year.

But we definitely need lots of the goodies that make the holiday meal so special.

Drop me a phone call or an email if you'd like to bring something but couldn't sign up in advance.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

December 2012 December has arrived and so has our annual Christmas Party. This is a great time to share great food and great company. The club provides the turkey and we share your favorite side dish or dessert with the rest of the club. As I did last year I will bring gift plants for all those who participate in our wonderful party. Remember to set aside time next Saturday out of your busy schedule for some fun time, conversations and being with all your friends in the club. During the course of the party, the brag table participants will have their name called to pick out a plant from the brag table gift plants. These plants will be provided by me and the club, some will be very nice, and the rest will be of great quality. This program is meant to encourage participation in our monthly brag table and provide a reward for your time and effort. So, if you brought in plants for the brag table, even if you did not win a first second or third, you still received a point for each plant entered. The participants who earned the most points will have first pick and we will work down the list. If you cannot attend the party but brought in a plant for the brag table, I will bring in the remaining plants to the meeting in January. Notice the word ‘remaining’ – you should attend the party to get your pick that you earned. We are putting together a bus trip to the Huntington Botanic Gardens in January on the 19th with the San Diego CSS Club. This is a wonderful opportunity to see the garden with friends and fellow enthusiasts. The winter blooming aloes are in full bloom at this time so bring your camera. Entry to the garden is free on this day and the bus will cost $45, which includes a box lunch. For those that volunteered at our fall show and sale, the Club will pay for a portion of your ticket. If you would like a discounted ticket for future bus trips, you can volunteer at our spring plant sale (contact Annie Morgan). We are planning a bus trip to the Intercity Show, the largest in the world in August. Please pay me at the party or email me <[email protected]> to confirm, and make payment by mail to 1172 Avocado Ave, Escondido, 92026. Make checks payable to PCSS.

MERRY CHRISTMAS! Peter Walkowiak

Seasonal Plant Care: How to protect your succulents from frost

Thirty-two degrees, the temperature at which water freezes, is the Great Divide. Nonsucculent perennials typically respond to winter cold by dying to the ground. In spring, their roots send forth new growth. But many succulents – especially those from mild climates – don't have this adaptation, and need special care when grown where temperatures drop below 32°F. Some suggestions:

1. Don't peel away dry leaves attached to a succulent's trunk or stem. They protect it from temperature extremes (cold and hot).

2. Keep succulents on the dry side. Cells that are turgid are more likely to burst when the liquid within them freezes.

3. Move potted succulents indoors when temperatures drop into the 30s. Give good air circulation, bright light (at least 6 hours a day), minimal water, no fertilizer, and temperatures cool enough to induce dormancy (between 40 and 60 degrees).

4. Move potted succulents beneath a deck, tree or eaves. Such structures help to keep heat from dissipating and protect leaves from falling ice crystals.

5. Place pots against walls, hardscape, boulders and/or shrubs that absorb and slowly release the day's heat. South- and west-facing exposures are best.

6. Drape succulents with frost cloth (sold at nurseries) or bed sheets. Avoid plastic, which traps moisture, doesn't let plants breathe, and intensifies sunlight.

Should your succulents become frost-burned:

1. Remove collapsed leaves only if it's likely they'll stay moist and decay. But if they'll protect the plant from future frost, leave on and prune in spring.

2. Preserve the geometry of slender-leaved succulents (such as agaves and aloes) by trimming tip-burned leaves to a point, rather than cutting straight across.

3. Chalk it up to experience. Now you know that particular plant is vulnerable and needs a protected location.

There is a fun website called Zazzle. Debra Lee Baldwin has a number of wonderful things available through the site. Her paintings and photography are there in some interesting ways including mugs, calendars, notecards, stamps, ties, etc. I suggest you take a look at them: http://www.zazzle.com/debraleebaldwin

A Few New Year’s Resolutions for a Succulentophile…

1. I will dig out no more of my wife’s ugly roses to replant with beautiful succulents.

2. I will forgo obtaining an essential succulent before giving up gin, milk, and wife’s clothing… but not necessarily in that order.

3. I will consider the point that listening to rhapsodies of Beethoven might be better than, or at least equal to watching my succulents grow.

4. I will no longer serve guests salads made of Echeveria leaves.

5. I will consider Agaves more for their beauty in the wild than for their contributions to the beverage industry. [Your Editor is torn by this resolution!]

6. I will attempt to limit my handling of cacti to a few minor scratches instead of rivaling the science of acupuncture.
