The NSCR started in 2009, as a collaboration between the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria

(IHVN), Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), Society of Oncology and Cancer Research of Nigeria

(SOCRON) and Cancer registries in health institutions in Nigeria. The main objective of this

program is to provide data from Nigeria cancer registries on the most common cancers, cancer

incidence and cancer mortality statistics.

The Federal Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Nigerian National System of Cancer Registries

(NSCR) held a Training Workshop for Registries directors and cancer registrars on Cancer Registration

Methods. The meeting took place from 29th to 30th of November, 2016 at Kebbi Hotel and the Institute

of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) training room in Abuja.

The objective of the training was to equip the cancer registrars and directors with cancer registration

methods, effectiveness and efficiency in data abstraction, collation, coding and analysis.

A total of 21 cancer registry directors, 32 cancer registrars, 5 participants from the Ministry of Health and

5 resource persons attended the training from 24 cancer registries in Nigeria.

Resource persons included: Prof. Clement Adebamowo - NSCR Abuja; Prof. Emmanuel Ezeome - Enugu

Cancer Registry, UNTH, Enugu; Dr. Elima Jedy-Agba - NSCR Abuja; Dr. Michael Odutola - NSCR Abuja; Dr.

Abidemi Omonisi - Ekiti Cancer Registry, ESUTH, Ekiti and Ms. Temitope Olukomogbon – NSCR, Abuja.

The book, “Cancer in Nigeria, 2009-2013”, a compilation of cancer registries data spanning 2009 to 2013,

was launched by the Honorable Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole on 29th November, 2016 at

Kebbi Hotel, Abuja. The book will be the first in a series of regular reports to the general public on cancer

epidemiology in Nigeria.

The book introduces the reader to the concept of cancer registration and the importance of cancer

registration in cancer control. It describes the history of cancer registration in Nigeria, the strides that

have been made, the challenges faced and how these were overcome.

The 5th Annual Review Meeting (ARM) of AFCRN was held from 18th to 20th December, 2016 at the

Conference Hall of Royal Lamerta Hotel, Kumasi, Ghana. The objective of the meeting was to review the

activities of the Network in 2016 and plan for the coming year.

The meeting was attended by 38 participants (from the 31 AFCRN member cancer registries and 22

countries in Sub-Saharan Africa), 3 facilitators (Drs. Max Parkin-AFCRN, J. M. Dangou -WHO and Freddie

Bray - IARC) and 1 administrative staff (Ms. Biying- AFCRN).

A preliminary report on ongoing research studies of AFCRN in collaboration with member registries was

presented. New projects were discussed and plans for 2017 were unveiled.

The International Atomic Energy Agency Workshop was held from 12th to 16th December, 2016 at the GS

Plaza Hotel, Accra, Ghana. The objective of the program was to enhance Member States' capacities in

establishing and operating cancer registries in support of their national cancer control programs.

The workshop was attended by 26 participants from 14 Member States. Prof. Olufemi Ogunbiyi (Ibadan

Cancer Registry) and Dr. Michael Odutola (NSCR) were the 2 representatives from Nigeria at the

workshop. Experts from WHO AFRO, IARC, IAEA and the African Cancer Registry Network (AFCRN) served

as resource persons at the workshop.

NOFIC Abakaliki, Ebonyi State is one of the National Obstetrics and Fistula Centers established in 6

geopolitical zones of the country.

Dr. Michael Odutola paid a 2-day visit to NOFIC, Abakaliki from June 9th to 10th, 2016 by following an

invitation from the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of NOFIC, Prof. Sunday Adeoye.

A sensitization workshop on Basic Cancer Registration Principles and Methods took place on June 10,

2016 at the NOFIC, Abakaliki seminar room. The workshop was attended by 20 staff of the cancer unit of

the hospital.

The NOFIC Cancer Registry is located in the Cancer unit of NOFIC, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. The registry

staff include Prof. Sunday Adeoye (Director), Dr. Babafemi Daniyan (Coordinator), Ms. Chinasa Nwigwe

(Registrar) and Ms. Patricia Jonas Omokhuwele (Statistician).

CanReg software was installed for the registry and the staff were trained on how to use the software. The

staff were taught how to carry out data abstraction, data entry, data import and export functions, data

analysis and data quality control checks function on the software.

NSCR NewsŸ Mr. Tunde Ayilara has retired from Ilorin registry. The new registrar for Ilorin Cancer Registry is Mr.

Michael Olutunde Samuel. We wish Mr. Ayilara well in his future endeavors.

Ÿ World Cancer Day was on February 4, 2017. The Federal Ministry of Health distributed cancer

sensitization materials freely to spread the message about cancer throughout Nigeria.

Ÿ International Association of Cancer Registries will hold its 39th conference in Utrecht, Netherlands

from October 17-19, 2017.

Ÿ Nigerian Cancer Registries data are now available online. Kindly visit our website

https://nigeriancancerregistries.net/ to access Nigerian nationwide cancer incidence data and be

informed of cancer registration activities.
