Everyone is invited to one of the last major events of Canada's sesquicen-tennial--Lindenlea's fall clean-up! The big day starts at 10:00am on Saturday,

October 28 (or even earlier for those who cannot wait). Traditions will con-tinue with pre-clean-up coffee avail-able followed by a post-clean-up BBQ.

We've had a leafy summer, so there will be lots of raking opportunities for everyone. See you there!

The LCA Board hosted representatives of the City at a public consultation meeting at the LCC on June 28th. City Planners explained the policy behind the Infill One by-law to offer some protection for mature neighbourhoods

from unregulated gentrification. The consensus of about 30 members of the Lindenlea community attending the meeting was strongly supportive of the initiative. As a result, at the first subsequent meeting of the LCA Board

on September 14, a resolution was passed to petition the City to add Lin-denlea to a list of mature neighbour-hoods protected by that bylaw.

Despite some weather issues, both movies shown in Lindenlea Park were a great success! Neighbours gathered to watch a family friendly movie under the stars and enjoy some tasty popcorn. Thanks to our fabulous helpers - Sara, Pierre, Andrew, Val-erie, Julie, Nick, Trish - our popcorn makers, and everyone else who helped make the night happen! We can't wait for next year!

We had a big turnout for our first lantern making workshop in August. Under the supervision of Roxie Clark, people had the opportunity to make a glass jar lantern, a square or a triangle lantern. We were very impressed by the designs and were happy to see sev-

eral participants bring their lanterns to the Lumiere festival. A big thank you to Valerie Lawton for volunteering and helping to make the night run smooth-ly. We are looking forward to doing another workshop next summer.

The students have spoken: the over-whelming choice for the 2017 Rockcliffe Park Public School Book Fair theme is MYTHOLOGY. Certainly, book se-ries like Rick Rior-dan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians and The Trials of Apollo (as well as some little films like Wonder Woman and the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok) have helped kindle kids’ interest in Greek and Norse gods and demigods. But we hope to explore all kinds of myths: Egyptian, Roman, Chinese, Indian, Celtic, Japanese and more.

The RPPS Book Fair attracts thousands of avid readers each year to browse through more than 50,000 donated titles in every genre. They also find maga-

zines, DVDs, CDs, vinyl, puzzles and board games—all at great prices. Many folks make a day of it: kids convene at

our Craft Corner and families drop in to our Café for tasty snacks and even hot lunch and dinner options.

Book Fair is one of the community’s most anticipated annual events. Dedi-

cated volunteers give more than 4,000 hours of their time, many working year-round to collect, sort, store and

price donations. The pro-ceeds from Book Fair flow not only back to RPPS, but also to other area schools in the form of grants to support literacy programs.

Mark your calendars: It’ll be the stuff of legend.

Join us for the 56th annual RPPS Book Fair

When: November 3–5,

tion and volunteer opportunities:

Last year, we worked with our City departments and staff and listened to residents through the budget consulta-tion process in order to deliver a bud-get that keeps the City on a path of fis-cal prudence while continuing to build a caring, sustainable, and prosperous city. We were able to accomplish this while keeping our 2% tax cap com-mitment, thus ensuring that Ottawa remains an affordable city for all.To shed light on the budget process and how these decisions impact your individual property taxes, the City of Ottawa has developed innovative tools available in the Understanding Your City Budget section of www.Ot-tawa.ca. The tools include:

How the City Budget Works: A short video that uses plain language and easy-to-understand graphics that outline the basics of how the City budget works.Get Involved in the Budget Process:

The City of Ottawa’s Budget Process Made Simple: A printable info-graphic that describes the budget and consul-tation process and highlights when and how residents can have their say.

City of Ottawa’s 2018 Budget Consultation Tool: An interactive online tool that provides you with the opportunity to play the role of politi-cian or administrator and determine what areas of City services and pro-grams require increases, decreases or status quo funding, and gives you the opportunity to provide comments. To show the impact of your decisions, the tool will also show how your changes will affect the budget rate and your in-dividual property taxes. The tool will remain live until the budget is tabled on November 8, 2017.

These budget tools will help you better understand how your tax dollars are

spent. Pre-budget

consultations are also an opportunity to express your views on how prop-erty tax dollars will be used and to take part in the decisions City staff and Council are faced with when develop-ing and approving the annual budget. In addition to the online budget tools, residents may also offer budget input by sending an email directly to [email protected], by contacting your City Councillor or by tweeting @ottawacity using the hashtag #ott-budget. Finally, I encourage residents to attend various Councillor-led 2018 Pre-budget public consultations that are taking place across our city in the month of October. For a schedule of public consultations or to access the online consultation tools, visit www.ottawa.ca/en/city-hall/budget-and-taxes/budget/budget-2018, and have your say in Budget 2018.

Once again, we are happy to be do-ing a food and clothing drive for our friends at the Rideau Rockcliffe Resource Centre. The food drive will run from October 2nd until October 19th. The food cupboard is in need of the following items: spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, white rice, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, cereal, toilet paper, any canned food,

laundry soap and other non-perishable foods. All foods must be donated before their due dates. The Baby Cupboard is in need of baby wipes, diapers (sizes 3-6), baby cereal, baby food, and baby formula. We will also be collecting winter cloth-ing (including winter coats) that is clean and in good repair for children, men and women.

There will be a donation bin at the community centre. You can drop off donations on Tuesday evenings between 6-8pm or when fitness classes are running and the community centre is open. Visit lindenlea.ca to check our schedule. For more information, contact Seanna at [email protected]

As the summer draws to a close, I want to take a minute to say thank you to all the communities that have welcomed me and my team to their events and Canada 150 celebrations across the riding. I am overwhelmed by the strength and inclusiveness of our diverse community, and this past week at the Liberal Summer caucus in Kelowna, I was proud to tell my col-leagues about the amazing events and initiatives in Ottawa—Vanier. I also want to thank everyone who has stopped by my new office at 233 Montreal Rd. or who attended our official office opening on August 12th. We served over 700 people throughout

the afternoon. This summer, I also held a successful consultation on Canada’s Food Policy on September 21st and a BBQ for students and businesses who participated in the Canada Summer Jobs program this year. There are many photos from these events on my Facebook page facebook.com/Equipe-TeamMona.As Parliament returns, I am excited to announce that I have launched the Ottawa-Vanier Federal Youth Council. I want to hear from youth in Ottawa-Vanier and work together to make our community a better place. I am inviting anyone between the ages of 15 to 21 years old to apply at www.

monafortier.ca. As well this fall, I will be holding a town hall discus-sion alongside MP Andrew Leslie to discuss the implementation of the upcoming cannabis legislation. Pres-ently our teams are working to secure a location and time, but stay tune for that announcement. To stay up to date on issues and initiatives in the riding, please sign up for my e-newsletter on my website monafortier.ca and follow me on Face-book, Twitter and Instagram.

A complete JUMBLE SALE, including baked goods, will be held at Nectar House (New Edinburgh Community & Arts Centre) on October 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 255 Mackay.A “fancy” table will feature fur, jewel-lery and silver, alongside other tables filled with books, clothing, house-wares, crafts and even small furniture. Registered non-profit Friends of Jag-ruti (FOJ) organized the sale to benefit the Jagruti Seva Sanstha community centre in Pune, India. Every penny

raised goes to this grassroots centre benefiting women and their families in Pune’s Janawadi slum.Jagruti Seva Sanstha provides a full range of community services to resi-dents of Janawadi, aided by a commu-nity-based social worker, teachers, and a volunteer lawyer and doctor. The community counsellor, herself from the slum, is available day and night to resolve domestic disputes and com-munity conflicts. The group’s main focus is on empow-

ering the poor and disadvantaged with education, vocational training and healthcare focusing on women and children. Young men and women can take short low-cost courses to be-come nurses’ aides, pre-primary teach-ers, and computer specialists among other things.

Q & A

1How long have you been attend-ing early morning fitness classes?

I have been attending early morning fitness classes for 20 years. I prefer to exercise in the morning. Prior to attending these classes, I attended fitness classes at Crichton School with some of the same instructors.

2How often do you go to fitness class? Why are you still coming to

the classes? What do you see as the main benefit effect(s) of coming to the classes?

I attend the classes 2 times per week. I go for my physical and mental well-being. There is a social engagement in the classes as well, so the classes meet the needs of the whole body as well as

the needs of the individual. I feel it’s so important to be active. In addition to the classes, I walk a lot and in the summer I swim every day either at the pond or at our cottage. At the cottage, I have to go up and down 75 steps to get to the water.

3What would you say to others to convince them to participate in the

fitness classes?

You learn everywhere and from every-thing you do. You do it because it’s a worthwhile thing to do in your life. My experience in the classes has been that it is an accepting and welcom-ing group. The people who go to the group are involved in the community. I have always been involved in my community wherever it may be. For many years I was the co-ordinator of community programs in Manor Park.

4 Can you remember one particular event/favourite story about the

community centre?

My 20 year old granddaughter attend-ed the fitness classes with me recently. She is a runner so she keeps fit, but she found the classes challenging. She was impressed with the physical ability of the women and men in the class, many of whom are 3 or 4 times her age!

5Did you meet anyone in the fitness classes who became a close friend?

I have a lot of friends in the classes, new friends as well as former friends and neighbours.

6 Is there anything else you would like to say about the instructors in

the classes at Lindenlea?

The instructors are very knowledgeable about fitness and about the body. They meet both group and individual needs.

7 Is there anything else you would like to add?

The centre serves the community well. I see this through the programs for all ages, as well as through activi-ties like the battery recycling, dona-tions to the food bank, donations of eye glasses, etc. I feel that thoughtful people come here.

The transformation of the final sec-tion of Beechwood into a “complete street” is almost done, with construc-tion between the Vanier Parkway/Crichton Street and Springfield Road wrapping up in late September/early October. You will notice that this project included improvements to the space at the corner of Beechwood and Springfield – an often-muddy path has been replaced by a small plaza with interlock pavers, a bench, planters and a bike rack. OC Transpo will be install-ing benches at the westbound bus stop in front of Chartwell New Edinburgh Square. For more information and to view the plans, please visit tobinussbaum.ca.

The Linden House Theatre Company will produce Matthew Barber’s En-chanted April in November this year. The play is set in 1922 – the heyday of Downton Abbey – and is based on a classic novel by Elizabeth von Arnim. This is a glorious fairy tale about what it takes to be happy. Four very differ-ent Englishwomen, all of them suffer-ing some degree of depression in the grim, post-war London of 1922, seek relief from spring rains and the dull-ness of their lives by renting a castle in Italy for the month of April. There, un-der the influence of blue skies and in the shadow of wisteria-cloaked walls, they find joy, laughter and friend-ship, and they begin to heal. This is a modern-day fairy tale. It is also one of the most delightfully gentle comedies

of modern the-atre.Tickets go on sale in October, and the play will be staged at the Elmwood The-atre, 261 Buena Vista Road: November 3-4, 10-11 at 7.30 pm; Sundays, November 5, 12 at 2 pm. Tickets: $25 at Books on Beechwood or online at lin-denpro.ca. In-formation and reservations: 613-842-4913.
