From the desk of Secretary

Dear Member, A warm Hello to you all This Newsletter should reach you before the SZUSICON 2008 and perhaps we are first off the block in state chapters to have our annual conference, in First week of September itself.

The 13th annual conference the association will be held at Kodai Kanal between 5th and 7th September 2008. There are two very distinguishing firsts to set this conference apart from the previous ones. Firstly, it is being held outside the state of Karnataka and secondly, it is a residential conference, i.e. all delegates will be housed at the conference venue itself, which is a holiday resort. Organizing secretary, Dr. Ganesh Kamath, is going to leave a new benchmark for the future secretaries to aim for. I am sure we all will have a gala time academically as well as socially. Let us make this trip with our families to experience this unique blend of business and pleasure ! The details of Prizes and awards of the conference are given in Awards Section. As you may be aware, two awards have already been on offer: Best Video Prize instituted by NU Trust and Best Poster Prize instituted by Bangalore Medical College Urology Dept. Kindly send your abstracts for these as well as for the Dilip Adappa Best Paper Award before 31st July 2008. Better still, submit them online at www.kua.in If you have any thing to be presented in other category like case discussion, please send the same to the Honorary secretary. Please send Materials also for the category of “Black pearls”

Please go through proposed constitution and send valuable feed back before 31st July; please check your personal details in Members’ section and if necessary revise them. Any suggestions to strengthen the association from members will always be welcome.

With warm regards,

Dr. Ali Poonawala

MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL GENERAL BODY MEETING OF KARNATAKA UROLOGY ASSOCIATION 2007

Venue: Hotel Regaalis, Mysuru,

0500PM 03 November 2007

Ø Meeting was called to order by President, Dr. Prakash Prabhu. welcoming the members Ø Minutes of the previous General Body Meeting held at Bapuji Auditorium Davangere

on 14th October 2006, already circulated through the Newsletter, were approved Ø Secretary’s report was read out Acceptance was proposed by Dr. G.K. Venkatesh and

seconded by Dr. A. Kamath. There were a few comments during the reading: o 1. Prof. Venugopal said during inauguration Awards should be given by the

President and not the chief guest. And the President should be in the middle on the dais and especially during joint meetings, KUA President and other office bearers must be given their due recognition and importance.

o 2. Dr. Keshavmurthy also lamented on breach of various protocols, like non office bearers being on the dais during the Oration etc.

o It was proposed to have a subcommittee to draft various protocols. Dr. A. Mohan, Dr. D. Ramesh and Dr. Keshavmurthy were proposed as members and provide the same in 3 month’s time. Other KUA members can provide their suggestions to the subcommittee.

o Dr. Keshav also objected to inclusion of scientific papers presented many times over at various other fora previously and suggested their rejection. Dr. Mohan suggested other sessions may be included if we have fewer papers.

Ø Treasurer’s report consisted of a statement of various deposits and their purpose and maturity details. This was read out by the secretary. However this was rejected since there was no balance sheet. Again few points were raised during this discussion.

o Dr. K. Venkatesh very graciously agreed to augment Dr. Dileep Adappa Best Paper Award Corpus amount by Rs. 50,000 in near future.

o The corpus of Bangalore Medical College best poster prize also needs to be supplemented by a sum of Rs.50.000 as promised in the last GBM and Dr. C.S.Ratkal agreed to a dead line of GBM of 2009 to bridge the shortfall.

Ø KUACON 2006 was described as a successful event by its Organising Secretary Dr. Manohar Mamani and same was acknowledged by the GBM. Dr. Mamani indicated a surplus of Rs 60,000/- to be gifted to KUA. He wanted this to be used as a corpus to start a Davangere award for the best Post Graduate Student. GBM requested him to make it to a mandatory minimum of Rs. One lakh. He agreed to do the same by the December end.

Ø Societies: o Bengaluru Urology Society President Dr. Ramesh informed of a successful year

of academic activities with regular monthly meetings on last Friday. Culmination as TS Jairam CUE on ’Lasers for BPH ’ was held at MS Ramaiah Medical College Hospital with KTP, Holmium and Thulium all three being used side by side for the first time in India.

o Dr. Keshavmurthy informed of the successfully conducted USI –CME for the post graduates at Institute of Nephro Urology with distinguished national faculty.

o Mangaluru Urologists with Dr. Ranjith Shetty as secretary, meet regularly.

o Mysuru Society of GU Surgeons meetings on last Wednesdays of the month, Dr.

Prakash Prabhu informed, consisted of case discussions, talks by experts and teleconferencing as well.

NUTH - change from LMA to LMF o Dr. Shivalingaiah – INU - change from LMA to LMF o Dr. Prashant Kulkarni –PG Puttaparthy LMA o Dr. Narsimhamurthy – PG Puttaparthy LMA o Dr. Krishna Prasad T. - PG – NUTH LMA o Dr. Sreenivas B.V.- Registrar NUTH LMA o Dr. Pramod BR – PG VIMS Bellary LMA o Dr. T. Manohar – Columbia Asia LMF

Ø Registration of the society will necessitate changes in the constitution and possibly some of the activity time tables as well. This is essential for Income Taxes and other legal requirements. This was conveyed by Mr. Gowthama, Chief Auditor from a firm in Bengaluru.. GBM requested the EC to go into the details, circulate the necessary documents and call for GBM again, if required. President thanked Mr. Gowthama for coming.

Ø President’s address was delivered by Dr. Prakash Prabhu, thanking the members for attending the meeting in Mysuru and making the programme a grand success He also thanked the Executive Council members for their cooperation and assistance for the conference.

Ø SZ USICON 2009 Venue was to be conveyed to South Zone Secretary. Dr. Shreedhar Reddy requested it to be given to Mangalore, supported by Dr. D. Ramesh. Dr. Nerli from Belgaum had also expressed interest in hosting the event. Secretary informed that Dr. Joseph Thomas, in one of the previous executive meeting, had accepted to withdraw his bid if Dr. Nerli was very keen on hosting the meet. Dr. Nerli assured of excellent facilities for the delegates as well as trade. Dr. HK Nagraj testified to the correctness of the claim. Since Belgaum had even for 2005 shown interest to host the meeting, GBM awarded 2009 SZ USICON as well as KUACON 2009 to Belgaum with Dr. Nerli as Organising Secretary for the combined event.

Ø Election of Executive Council for the posts of President Elect and a Council Member in place of Dr. Amar Kumar Jayaram were next on agenda and Secretary informed of Dr. A. Mohan’s nomination for the President Elect proposed by Dr. GK Venkatesh and seconded by Dr. Mohan Suvarna. He was declared elected unopposed. Dr. Siddalingaiah Neeli was proposed as EC member by Dr. Nerli and seconded by Dr. Mohan. Two points were raised:

o Dr. Ramesh wondered if it should be mandatory for nominee for President Elect to be Council member previously, as is in USI. Dr. Keshav suggested it should be brought as an amendment.

o Dr. K. Venkatesh objected to the idea of a ’cozy’ Executive Council based on major cities like Bangalore and reminded the objective is to go to smaller cities for the council meetings and take the academic activities along

Ø During Any other matters, Dr. Venkatesh Krishnamoorthy brought to the notice of the house of the letter he had written to the Secretary. It was to include in the agenda an amendment to Associate Membership rules. Amendment to enable non doctors to be admitted as Associate Members of KUA. He chided the Secretary and the EC for going beyond their powers in denying him the right.

Page 6: newsletter of kua 2008 final · for uro oncology. Members participated actively in 14 podium, 6 video and 6 poster presentations. Following Prizes were won: Dr. D. Adappa Best Paper

o Dr. Poonawala said that the rights of council in this regard are not defined. The matter was discussed in two previous EC meetings and EC Members were against including it in this year’s agenda with the explanation that it is a sensitive matter and needs more time for mature discussion to take place. It may be raised by the member this time as any other matter -as it is being done now - and to be included in the official agenda next year for voting to place, if required,

o Dr. Laxman Prabhu welcomed the idea of non doctors becoming members and said it is essential to be all inclusive as we move forward.

o Dr. Mohan said that amendments, if of grave import, may be circulated to members beforehand, to enable them to be ready for a ‘mature’ discussion.

Ø KUA 2008 Organising Secretary Dr. Ganesh Kamath informed that the venue for the meeting will be Kodai Kanal and not Ooty as mentioned earlier. He suggested a Resort based Conference with a package deal. He also requested cooperation from the GBM to mobilize the funds in view of possible difficulty since it will be held outside the state and may be used as a reason by sponsors for refusal.

Ø Handing over was done by Dr. Prabhu to Dr. Anant Kamath who thanked him for the services.

Ø Vote of thanks for attendance was extended to members by Dr. Ali Poonawala, leading to conclusion of the GBM 2007 of KUA.

NEWS: Ø St. John’s Medical College Hospital has started DNB Urology programme. Contact Prof

A. Mohan dept of Urology SJMCH Sharjapur road Bengaluru for details. Ø Institute of Nephro-Urology held, amongst various academic activities, held live operative
