Beat Managers Update
Dear all
With winter seemingly here to stay for a while let’s remind you of some
tips in relation to car safety.
Are your tyres over the legal limit of 1.6mm? – Why? – Slippery roads
are hard to drive on at the best of times but you need at the very least
that 1.6mm to have any chance of grip on the road. Less than 1.6mm is
illegal and you could be on the receiving end of points and a fine.
Is your washer bottle full? – Why? – At this time in the year the roads
are wet and full of grit, salt and muck. Seeing out of the windscreen
can prove difficult, however, with your washer bottle full it will be easy
to clean. An empty washer bottle could also see you being fined.
Do you have a ‘just in case’ kit in the boot? – Why? – This is just a pref-
erence and not law but have you heard about the time the motorway
was shut in the snow stranding 100s of motorists? Blankets, snacks and
water would be helpful in this instance until help arrived.
Last but not least don’t let our less than honest members of the public
have an early Christmas present in the form of your car. If the engine is
running whilst you are defrosting it then don’t leave it. They are quick
on their feet and will be happily driving away before you
know it. If the car is on the road with the engine running then
it needs to have a licensed driver with it. Don’t commit an
offence of ‘quitting’ (look it up it is real).
Have a safe and happy Christmas.

Home Security
Darker nights
At this time of year you need to be even more vigilant about your
home security because burglars see darker nights as an opportunity
to target properties which are left vulnerable – due to unsecured
doors or personal belongings that are left visible to potential thieves.
Cheshire Police offer the following crime prevention advice:
• Always lock doors and accessible windows. 35% of burglaries
happen because a door or window has been left open or unlocked.
• Leaving garden tools out provides criminals with an easy method
of forcing entry to your house.
• Putting a spare key under a mat or plant pot offers burglars an even
easier way into your house. Burglars will look in these places.
• Keep keys away from the letterbox to stop burglars ‘fi shing’ for
them and letting themselves into the property.
• Give the impression that the house is occupied. Draw the curtains
and leave a light on in the house when you go out in the evening.
• Have a neighbour check that milk bottles and parcels are not
left on the doorstep, and that letters and newspapers are not left
in the letterbox.
• Burglars are unscrupulous people. Tempting them by leaving
valuables in view is asking for trouble.
• Even something as simple as a gravel drive can put off criminals,
burglars are unlikely to take the risk of having to tiptoe over
a noisy surface.
• Fit an approved, motion-sensor security light – this not only serves
as a safety device for you but also as a deterrent to any potential
burglars approaching the house.

Murdishaw PSPO Zone
Police officers and PCSO’s continue to monitor the PSPO zone at Murdishaw, The area is due to be re-developed by Halton Council and Liverpool housing trust with new residential houses on the old ‘Jolly Brewer’ site. We have had problems recently with youths / kids climbing on the roof of the Co-op, Officers are working with the local council and the shops to prevent this, please be aware that even minor ASB like this is con-sidered a breach of the order and offenders will be dealt with robustly, in addition to ar-rest this includes visits to home addresses with local housing associations which will affect the tenancy and the housing provider may have grounds to seek possession of the property. Please know where your children are in the evening and coming holidays other-wise you may find us knocking on your door!
Community engagement—Home watch co-ordinators STILL URGENTLY NEEDED!
I am still urgently looking for volunteers who would like to become members of a home scheme, Home
watch is a scheme where neighbours are looking out for each other and reporting any suspicious incidents
to each other and if required to the police, this not only adds security to where you live but can also bring
neighbours together and prevent crime.
I have been in contact with our safer homes and crime prevention
officers and they would assist in initially setting the scheme up
with any persons interested.
If you are interested in starting a scheme in your area please visit
the following link where more information is available, or contact
me directly on 101 where I will be happy to assist you.
