Newsletter No. 45 - May 2014
Our inaugural Secondary Schools’ Sports Day at Bandar Meru
Raya campus was held over 2 days, on Friday, 11th April 2014 and
Saturday, 12th April 2014. Participants were selected in trials and
they practised hard weeks before the event. The finalists for the
track events competed on Saturday. For the field events, those
who qualified went straight to the finals on Friday and Saturday
according to their year group. Many students participated in more
than one event and the response received from the spectators
was overwhelming as parents, students and former students of
Tenby turned up to cheer the participants. It was indeed a close
battle among the four houses but Mercury House (Blue) finally
emerged champion this year. Last but not least, our heartfelt
thanks to all parents, guardians and former students who turned
up to give your support. Your presence was important to us. Well
done to all students and staff in making this event a success!

Message from Head of Secondary of TIS
I would like to offer a profound vote of thanks for the wonderful welcome
myself and my family have received from all corners of the Tenby Ipoh family.
Whether it be from students, colleagues or parents, it has been truly heartening
to be so warmly embraced into this delightful community. As a family, all four of
us have spent a considerable amount of time calendar and clock watching in
anticipation of our move to Malaysia from East Africa, and we are ecstatic to fi-
nally be here and getting settled in to life in the city. We have all been struck by
the friendliness of folk here and by everyone’s willingness to offer help and as-
sist in anyway. Thank you all so very much! My wife, Juliette and I have been
married for almost 10 years and have a son Nathaniel who is in Year 3, and a
daughter Niamh in Nursery both here on the campus. They have immediately
made new friends and relished gaining familiarity with their new school, their
new classmates and in particular the wonderful new food on offer to them. Food
is clearly a big part of the culture here and as a family we have all reveled in this
delicious change in our diets. We also feel blessed to be located in such an at-
tractive area, surrounded by rich forests and stunning vistas in every direction.
We will work hard on trying to get out and about to visit different parts of the
country to soak up the vibrant cultural diversity.
I very much operate an open door policy and
would like to encourage members of the Tenby
Ipoh community to pop by and say hello and
introduce yourselves. Both myself and the
Secondary Staff team are here to help in any
way we can – just ask! I look forward to the
opportunity to meet as many of you who read
this as possible in the coming weeks and
months.

Tenby’s Easter Celebration
On Tuesday 15th April, Tenby Schools Ipoh students
from the international and national schools gathered
for a colourful celebration of Easter, with singing,
dancing & competitions. Over 300 children filled the
auditorium as the presenters from Year 5 and 6 guid-
ed us on a journey to find out how Easter is celebrat-
ed around the world.
The tour began in Malaysia, where our Year 1 & 2
students paraded their winning Easter bonnets, ac-
companied by Mr David at the piano. Prizes and cer-
tificates were then presented to wonderful winners of
the TIS Easter egg decoration competition, organised
by Mrs Harvey. Also recognised for their achievement
were the winners of the Sekolah Tenby colouring
competition.
The presenters then whisked us away to Europe, to
discover the origins of the Easter bunny tradition and
the traditions celebrated before Lent – Shrove Tues-
day and mardi gras. The route then took us across
the Atlantic to the steps of the White House itself, as
we discovered the annual tradition of the US Presi-
dent’s Easter Egg Roll.
The stage was then set for the competitors of the first
ever ‘Tenby Easter Egg Roll’, with representatives
from each Key Stage 2 class. The participants were
tasked with rolling a boiled egg along a 10m course
with the back of a wooden spoon. Erica Yung of Year
6 Green took the inaugural 1st prize with a blistering
pace, a few metres ahead of Brian Choo of Year 6
Special samba dance spectacular by the Year 3 & 4.

Just when the teachers were relaxed and enjoying
the show, it was announced there would be a spe-
cial staff race! Students distributed wooden spoons
to invite sporting teachers to join the elite 10m
dash. As students’ cheers filled the arena, the race
had to be restarted due to wild cheating from sev-
eral athletes. Eventually the crown was claimed by
Mr Teoh, ahead of Mrs Harvey in 2nd.
The journey continued south, through New Orle-
ans and then to Rio de Janeiro, as we discovered
the link between Easter & mardi gras, with a spe-
cial samba dance spectacular from Years 3 & 4,
choreographed by Mrs Louis, with masks provided
by Ms Michelle.
Finally, the presenters (Kasi Karuppan and
Saasmita Kumar (Year 6 Green), Rachael Lam Shi
Kei and Adreena Ellyza binti Zulherick (Year 5
Blue) guided us back to Ipoh, as we reflected on
the rebirth of Tenby Schools Ipoh itself, from its
humble origins, through several different sites, to
the present day. The theme of growth through har-
mony was poignantly evoked through the singing
recital of Year 5 and a handbell performance by
students from SR4, 5 & 6, courtesy of the music
department.
The event was an enjoyable end to an extremely
long half-term and showed the resilience and crea-
tivity of all the staff and students involved. As or-
ganiser, Mr Lowery would like to publicly thank all
who contributed to the success of the occasion.

Transition Day
Students of Year 11 and KBSM 5 had an en-
joyable foretaste of life in Tenby Ipoh’s Sixth Form.
More than 70 students participated in the activities
planned and carried out by the A Levels staff and Co-
hort 9 students of the Sixth Form. The objective of the
program was to highlight the distinctive flavour of our
Sixth Form program which not only offers academic
excellence but also stresses global citizenship studies,
debates, drama and community service.
There was an interesting balance between
plenary sessions with Mr Louis Rozario Doss, Head of
the Sixth Form and student-led subject-based activities.
The highlight of the day was the Global Perspectives
Forum on “What Unites and What Divides” staged by
the students of Year 11 and KBSM 5.
At present, we have 62 students enrolled in the
Sixth Form. Our next intake is scheduled for 23 June
2014. Joining our Sixth Form promises to give a
way ,way better option for one and all…...

A Trip To See “The Clown’s Guide To The Orchestra”
On Sunday, 13th April 2014, the students of Year 7 and Year 8 went for a
school trip to see “The Clown’s Guide to the Orchestra” presented by the
Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra at the Dewan Filharmonic Petronas, KLCC
Kuala Lumpur. Students were accompanied by Dr Jeffery Rowlands, Mr Ian
Hayes and Mrs Judy Louis. The outing was a very fabulous and fun-filled
occasion apart from getting a very educational experience. Journey on the
way to KLCC was exciting as many students played interesting games in the
bus. After a 3-hour bus ride, they finally reached the destination. Students
started to “oooh” and “aaah” at the size of the Twin Towers and the foyer of
Dewan Filharmonic Petronas was astounding with carpeted floors, soft music
and lots more. As they entered the hall, the orchestra was playing but there
was no clown to be seen. Suddenly, a clown jumped out of nowhere and gave
all of them a good fright. The whole show was funny and it taught the
audience a lot about musical instruments. Everyone gave the performers a
huge round of applause when the show ended. The students felt sad when it
was time to leave and they wished they could have the opportunity to see the
show again someday.

An Educational Trip To Penang
KBSM 4 and 5 students went for a one-day trip to Penang on Sunday, 30 April 2014. There
were 40 students from both classes accompanied by Madam Pang, Cik Maznah and Mr Lee Soo
Mee. They visited the Penang Bird Park, Tropical Spice Garden and the Penang Street. They
started their journey at 7.30 am by bus and in the bus, they had snacks generously prepared by
the parent of KBSM 4’s Shahzuwan. Thanks a lot! It took them about 2 hours to reach their first
destination, which is the Penang Bird Park. They enjoyed the educational tour there, thanks to the
tour guide - Ms Tan. She briefed them about the history of the 5-acre bird park, which was estab-
lished in 1988 and there were about 3000 birds of 450 species from Malaysia and other countries
all around the world. After having their lunch at the park’s restaurant and a bird show and presen-
tation, they off to the next destination, the Tropical Spice Garden.
They were warmly welcomed by the friendly crew at the Tropical Spice Garden. Students were
divided into two groups and were given opportunity to experience the taste and smell of different
types of spices and flowers. They also stopped by a souvenir shop in the garden.
The last destination was the Penang Street where students bought some local products and
souvenirs there. They had an early dinner in Juru before leaving Penang. Wow! It was really a
fruitful and enjoyable trip for the fourth and fifth formers!

Arts Week: 16th June – 20th June
Arts Week is approaching! Since our arrival at our
new site at Meru Raya, Arts staff have been work-
ing with students to create a range of Art and
Design exhibitions, and Dance and Music perfor-
mances that we would now like to share with you.
Over this week, there will be performances in the
school auditorium at 7.30pm which we would love
parents and guardians to attend. All students in
Tenby International Secondary School Years 7 - 9
will be involved, alongside students from our Arts
CCA groups. Spaces will be limited and more
detailed information regarding the programme for
the week ticketing will come out after the half term
break. We hope we can count on your support for
what should be an exciting week displaying the
talent that Tenby has to offer.
Excel Week: 23rd June – 27th June
Excel Week is an opportunity for Year 7 – Year 10
students to achieve excellence outside of the
normal classroom environment through a range of
trips, visits, leadership activities, independent
learning projects, and intervention. Excel Week
will offer the chance for staff to extend young
peoples' learning and to enrich their understanding
and appreciation of themselves, others and the
world around them. By holding a one week event
we are limiting the disruption to normal curriculum
time as all students and staff across the school
can embrace this exciting opportunity.
Alongside activities outside of school including
residentials and day trips, we will also be offering
a range of exciting learning activities in school,
scheduled around the excursions our students
may choose to undertake. This means that each
student at Tenby International Secondary School
will have their own timetable for the week based
on their interests and choices.
It looks to be an exciting week and we look
forward to sharing photos and thoughts with you in
future newsletters.

From PMR to PT3
Referring to our circular dated 17 April 2014 (attached for reference), the National
Assessment System for Form 3 students has been revamped beginning April
2014. Starting this year, instead of sitting for the Penilaian Menengah Rendah
(PMR), all Form 3 (KBSM 3) students will be assessed via Pentaksiran Tingkatan
3 (PT3). Students will be assessed on what they have learned from Form 1 to
Form 3 and Mathematics and Science papers will be in both Bahasa Malaysia
and English (until 2018). Candidates from private schools are required to pay a
registration fee of RM65.00.
Term Dates for New Academic Year 2014/2015
The International School Calendar for the academic year 2014/2015 has not been finalised. We
should be sending out the calendar by the end of May. However in the school newsletter No. 39
in January 2014, we updated the school calendar up to December 2014 when Sekolah Tenby
began their new academic year on 6 January 2014. You will note that TIS will begin their new
academic term on 26 August 2014 whilst Sekolah Tenby comes back for their third term on 14
August 2014.
This date for the TIS new academic term has been adjusted to ensure that the August holidays
and the December holidays are about 4 weeks each to cater to students/staff who come from
different hemispheres (hence different summer holidays). The updated calendar is available on
our website and hard copies are available in the school office.
Revision of Fees for the New Academic Year
There is a revision of fees for the new academic year. For Tenby International School, the new
academic year 2014/2015 begins on 26 August 2014 whereas for Sekolah Tenby, the new
academic year 2015 will start on 6 January 2015. A copy of the circular is attached to this news-
letter for reference. The new fee schedule is also available on our website at
www.tenby.edu.my.
Transport Providers for Tenby Schools Ipoh
When the school moved to its new campus in September 2013, we helped to source a few
transport providers for our parents and guardians. The following were the guidelines given out to
prospective providers who registered with us:-
1. They must possess a valid driving license.
2. Their vehicle must be roadworthy and fitted with seat belts.
3. The cost must be reasonable.
4. Their photograph, address and photocopy of their IC (Identification Card) are kept in the
school file.
A list was then drawn up and parents were advised to select their choice and negotiate the cost
themselves, whilst checking on the safety of the vehicle and reliability of the provider. If there
are any complaints, they should direct them to the provider but they can highlight the issues to
the school to keep us informed of the quality of the service provided. This information on the
quality of the service will help us provide a more reliable list for future parents/guardians to
select from.
