Senior Production
Tonight is the night of stars!
At times, queries are made about the value of senior productions. The value I believe is how children blossom when given an opportunity to be in the spotlight that a production provides. In education, we teach a wide range of subject—maths, reading, writing, spelling, Hindi, phys-ed, etc.. Different subjects cater for the different interests of students, as they would for us. So opportunities like the production provide a chance for these students to shine! I look forward to seeing the children perform tonight in an environment that is not familiar to them.
I would specially like to thank Chris Carey, Linda Greig, Pooja Verma and Allistair Ramsay for their hard work preparing our students for tonight. On behalf of the students and staff, thank you! To all the staff - junior, senior and our integration aides - a big thank you also for assisting all our students. This is a great example of what a community does for each other!
China
Tomorrow I fly out to Shanghai as part of the Leading Asian Capable Schools program. Victoria faces a fast changing world driven by increasing globalization, people mobility and the economic and strategic rise of Asia. To harness the opportunity to compete globally our students require an education that equips them with the skills and knowledge to be local and global citizens, ready for the world and ready for work. This includes Asia capabilities, such as knowledge of the societies and languages of Asia, intercultural capability as essential to living and working in a multicultural Victoria and the diverse world of the 21st century.
I am also on leave for the first week in term 4 but have left the school in very capable hands with Lorraine Humphrey, Acting Principal in my absence.
Have a great holiday and I will see everyone again later in term 4.
Stay safe over the holidays and have a great break.

PARENTING
A COOL TOOL TO REDUCE TEENAGE RISK
Many parents think their teenagers are three years younger than they really are, while most teenagers think they are three years older than they are.
Finding middle ground can be hard work.
Teenagers generally want more freedom, while parents want to make sure their young people are safe.
As young people grow and show the
ability to make smart choices – we need to allow them more authority over their lives.
Increasing independence involves
greater freedom to choose, which demonstrates trust and faith in their ability to make good decisions.
Young people often can’t see the long-term consequences of their decisions so it helps to give them information to help them make smart choices.
Also brain research shows that teenagers in the 13-18 year age group need help and guidance around decision-making. The pleasure-seeking part of their brain tends to dominate the reasoning part of the brain during this stage……and later as well.
Here is a cool tool to prompt young people to make smart decisions, particu-larly when you are not around. Give your young person this 3 question format to help them assess the safety and
suitability of any activity or behaviour that they are about to participate in:
1. Is it safe? This question helps them to assess risk.
2. Is it fair? This question helps them to be sociable and consider others.
3. Is it smart (and in my long-term best interests)? This question
encourages them to think ahead, which isn’t a typical teenager’s strong point.
The safe, fair, smart tool needs to be re-peated often so that it will sink in. My three adult children can now repeat these questions verbatim as they were repeated often regardless of the
withering looks, raised eyebrows and shrugged shoulders that went my way.
Do you have a child at home turning 5 before 30 April 2018?
Have you enrolled them for school next year?
If not please collect an enrolment pack from the of-fice to complete, then return it to the office as
soon as possible.
Our transition program starts in October, this
gives your child the best start to school in 2018.
Promoting independence in our
adolescence is hard work for parents as we are always treading a fine line
between being too protective and
allowing young people more freedom.
If young people are to learn how to make smart choices, adults need to equip them with the processes as well as the
opportunities to do so.

Senior Choir’s Visit to Regis Cranbourne
Last Friday, students from the Senior Choir were invited to sing a variety of old songs for the residents of Regis Cranbourne. The audience were so entertained they sang along with the choir and talk was started about starting up a choir of their own. Lifestyle employees and residents were so thrilled with the performance that after the students enjoyed a delicious morning tea, they were asked to sing a few encores!!! A wonderful time was had by all! We are looking forward to our next visit!
