OUR SAVIOUR LUTHERAN CHURCH
NEWSLETTER
September 2018
Church Council Church Council meets Sunday, September 2nd,
following the service.
Ladies’ Guild
Ladies’ Guild will meet Thursday, September
6th, at 6:00 PM with a potluck dinner at the
church. There is a sign up sheet on the bulletin
board. All ladies are invited. Please come and
join us for a delicious meal and fellowship.
From trials to triumphs British evangelist Smith Wigglesworth (1859-
1947) was impoverished and illiterate during
childhood. He also stammered, which
embarrassed him greatly. When he married a
Salvation Army preacher, she taught him how
to read using the Bible.
Wigglesworth recognized that all the adversities
he’d faced were key to his ministry’s
effectiveness. “Great faith is the product of
great fights,” he said. “Great testimonies are the
outcome of great tests. Great triumphs can only
come out of great trials.”
Kingdom Kids Kingdom Kids resumes at Our Saviour
Lutheran Church beginning Sunday, September
9th from 9:00 – 10:00 AM. Every other Sunday
of the month. For ages preschool through 8th
grade. Join us for crafts, storytime, and snacks.
A legacy of faith National Grandparents Day became an official
observance in 1978, thanks largely to the
lobbying efforts of Marian McQuade, a West
Virginian who had 15 children and 43
grandchildren during 60 years of marriage.
The purpose of National Grandparents Day,
celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day,
is threefold: to honor grandparents, to give
grandparents an opportunity to show love for
their children’s children and to help children
become aware of strength, information and
guidance older people can offer.
Grandparents — and, in this mobile society,
surrogate grandparents — also serve as
examples of how to endure challenges with
God’s help. Elders describe how God remains
present, faithful and steadfast throughout the
years. As Psalm 145:4 (NIV) says, “One
generation commends your works to another;
they tell of your mighty acts.”

“Surely he has borne our griefs ...”
When veteran Joe Serna confessed that he’d been drinking — behavior prohibited in the Veterans
Treatment Court program — Judge Lou Olivera sentenced him to one night in jail. That might not seem
like much, but while deployed, Serna had been trapped underwater when his truck toppled into a canal.
A buddy managed to move him to an air pocket, saving his life, but the buddy and two others died.
Years later, even the thought of confinement triggered flashbacks.
As Serna arrived for his jail stay, Olivera, also a vet, saw his anxiety, entered the cell with Serna and
spent the night. His kind act nearly brought Serna to tears, but the judge believes any vet would have
done the same. “These are our brothers,” Olivera says. “We never leave each other behind.”
Similarly, Jesus entered our troubled story alongside us, sharing in our suffering, brokenness and even
death. As a comrade unlike any other, Jesus calls us his brothers and sisters, refusing to leave us behind
with our self-imposed burdens. Above all, Jesus does what only God can: redeems us for the joy of new
life.
September is going to be the beginning of our breakout year! Jesus has given this congregation a
mission, a mission that we will not be carrying out on our own. In fact, Jesus has already started
the mission and His call to us is “Join Me!”
“Joining Jesus On His Mission”, written by Greg Finke is going to be the basis for a 5-week
sermon series beginning September 9. Finke describes the message of his book this way, “Joining
Jesus on His Mission will alter the way you see your life as a follower of Jesus and take you beyond
living your life for Jesus to living life with Jesus. Simple, powerful and applicable insights show
you how to be on mission and recognize where Jesus is already at work in your neighborhoods,
workplaces and schools. You will feel both relief and hope. You may even hear yourself say, ‘I can
do this!’ as you start responding to the everyday opportunities Jesus is placing in your path.”
Here are five questions that will be at the center of our worship during the series:
1. How did you see God at work this week?
2. What has Jesus been teaching you in his Word?
3. What kind of conversations are you having with pre-Christians?
4. What good can we do around here?
5. How can we help you in prayer?
If you look at each question, “Where is the focus?” “Joining Jesus On His Mission” is about you!
Jesus is already in the community, on a mission and He is asking you to go with Him which takes
away the fear and anxiety. During these five weeks, you will be challenged to reexamine what it
means to be a disciple for Christ. You will see with “new eyes” how God is working in you daily
life and how God’s presence in your life will make easier for you to tell your story to others.
As a congregation, we are beginning to Join Jesus on His Mission as we complete the work on the
parsonage and begin having monthly family workshops that will provide Hudson families an
opportunity to gather together to learn from professionals on important topics, spend time with
their families and allow their children to interact with other children. We are Joining Jesus on His
Mission as we expand our Kingdom Kids on Sunday mornings. Kingdom Kids will resume
September 9 at 9 am and meet every other week. Please check the church calendar for which
Sundays it will be held. We will begin studying Finke’s book during Bible class, Sunday mornings
at 9 am, that will provide a greater understanding of how we can Join Jesus on His Mission.
We’re on a mission. Jesus is already there. Let’s go with Him!
Pastor Al
The labors of the Five-Two will begin to bear fruit this month. The results of the community survey indicated
that families are seeking time with other parents, time with their family and time for their children to interact
with other children. We are hopeful the renovation of the parsonage will be completed by the early part of
September. Saturday, September 8 will be the first of a series of Family workshops that will provide parents
the opportunity to learn from professionals on a variety of topics that will help them to strengthen their fami-
lies. In August the Five-Two team met with several local and school officials to share our vision with them
and they walked away very supportive of what we are hoping to accomplish.
Do you know a family who might benefit from attending? Share this information with them and encourage
them to attend.
We are still needing furnishing for the house. We are looking to purchase round tables and chairs; bistro ta-
bles, large screen television; sound equipment; single serve coffee maker. If you can help with any of these
items, please speak with Pastor Al

GOD'S RICHEST BLESSINGS TO ALL
Bless the students Dear Lord Jesus, bless the children and youth of this nation, returning to their schools and
colleges. May your Holy Spirit enlighten their minds, purify their vision and strengthen
their wills. Protect them as they learn in the classroom and participate in activities outside
it. May they learn to follow in your steps, just as you grew in wisdom and stature, and in
favor with God and man. Amen.
