This Term UC4 have done a big assignment on volunteer organizations and
groups that help serve the community. Each student selected an organization
of their choice that they had an interest or passion in. Some of the
organizational groups that were selected were the RSPCA, CFS, SLSC, WWF,
UNICEF and many more. The students did extensive research answering a
number of questions about what their chosen organization does to serve the
community. This assignment was to get students thinking about the ideas and
notions of what a volunteer does and how they can be a major support to
many organizations. It also included subjects such as Literacy, History, Visual
Arts, Technology reading and researching. Students were encouraged to find
reliable resources and websites and learn how to put their fresearch into their
own words in order for them to understand it better and
so that they do not plagiarize.
This assignment was conducted over 5 weeks and
included questions such as:
What is volunteering?
Why do you think people volunteer?
The history of your organization
Roles and operations on the organization
Create a mind map or fishbone about the
organizations different branches, connections and if the
organization operates on a state, interstate or international level.
Research a famous person affiliated with the volunteer organization
Use multimedia to create a poster or advertisement to showcase your
organization and get people to join or support.
Write and illustrate a narrative about a volunteer in your chosen
organization
Choose and relate your chosen organization to 5 different HOM values.
This assignment I think really encouraged students to
expand their knowledge and understanding and learn
about real world topics. Some of the chosen
organizations such as the CFS and the RSPCA were very
suited to real life events that have occurred this year
allowing the students to develop empathy and
compassion skills and apply their knowledge to those
events.
I asked a number of students about their assignment:
After completing this assignment what have you gained
from it?
I know a lot more about the organization that I research and I know a lot
more about volunteering means in general which is signing up to an
organization without being paid and putting in your own time and effort to
help the community. - Angus Andrews
I learnt that different volunteering or-
ganizations come in many different
shapes and sizes and they all can
help to make the world a better
place. - Louisa Ferguson
I learnt more about the St
Johns organization and I
learnt more about what
the volunteers do to help
other people and to help
keep the company
going.
- Matthew Jackaman
I learnt that assignments
aren’t always easy and
you have to be organized
and good with your time
management. I learnt lots
of new facts about Surf
Life savers and that is im-
portant to stay between
the flags at the beach. -
Matilda Shaughnessy
It is good to volunteer so you can help out people and save lives and
you can go home and feel that you have done something good today.
I also learnt how to manage my time because when I first got it I
thought it was going to be easy to get it done in the time limit but sud-
denly I had a week left to do it. But I managed to get it done and I felt
awesome. - Isaac Winther.
To work on it every day, at the start of
the assignment I thought we had so
much time and then suddenly there
was one day left and I still had two
questions to go. In this assignment I
learnt about David Hurley he was the
patron of the red cross, he did a lot of
fundraising for the Red Cross.
- Tom Hollis
I gained research skills. I learnt that I
needed to not let it sit until two weeks
before the due date. I also learnt that
UNICEF is a children’s emergency fund
that supports children through hunger
and poverty in countries such as Africa
or Sudan. - Lucy O’Malley
I liked learning about real world subjects
and how the organizations impact the
world positively. I also gained new skills in
completing longer assignments and de-
veloping my time management skills.

Plastic Free July is a waste reduction initiative that started as a local government program in Perth in 2011 and is now a global environmental movement. Last year an estimated 250 million people took part in Plastic Free July 2019 worldwide and on average participants reduced their household waste by 4.8% and their recycling by 4.5% per year. Check out
https://www.mitchamcouncil.sa.gov.au/services/kerbside-waste-and-recycling-collection/plastic-free-july for more information and current events.
How does it work? - Participants pledge to reduce their use of single-use plastics for a day, a week or the month of July. It's not about doing everything, or being perfect but doing something and making small changes in our daily lives that add up to make a difference. People new to the challenge often choose to tackle the Top 4 (straws, plastic bags, coffee cups and water bottles) while others expand to finding alternatives for take-away food, pre-packed produce and plastic food wrap. Once engaged in the Plastic Free July challenge, participants receive encouragement and ideas from Plastic Free July to help them stick with the challenge. Success stories are reported and celebrated!
When is it? - The campaign runs for the month of July; however, Plastic Free July isn ’t just a month, research shows 9 out of 10 participants made changes that have now become habits and a way of life, reducing plastic waste far beyond the month of July.
Who is it for? - Everyone! In 2019, an estimated 2 .8 million Australians participated in Plastic Free July. Many individuals take on the challenge personally, however families, community groups, schools, workplaces will often sign up together to provide one another with encouragement, support and ideas.
