FROM THE PRINCIPAL Year 12 At the end of this week, most of our Year 12 students will be more than half way through their HSC Examinations. They are continuing to study hard and their teachers are supporting them with last minute revision. So far, the feedback from students regarding the examination papers has been quite positive. Their next and final school event will be the formal on the 15th of November, which will be a chance for them to relax and celebrate the end of their exams and their school life together.

In the final week of Term 3, Year 12 students held several events including a fun photo afternoon. Well done to all of our students for the way they conducted themselves and for the imagination shown in determining their outfits (below).

On Thursday 27th September, Model Farms High School held the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony, to recognise the end of 13 years of formal schooling of our 2018 cohort. I would like to thank the many parents who have passed on congratulatory messages about the organisation of the evening and congratulate our Year 12 students on their achievements throughout their time at Model Farms.

Staffing I would like to take this opportunity to welcome two new permanent staff members. • Mr Majed Kabbara joins the Mathematics Faculty • Mrs Katarzyna Sabel joins the Home Economics Faculty

At the end of last term, the school farewelled two of our SAS staff members. Mrs Jen Rubie has undertaken a new role external to the Department of Education and Mrs Yasmin George was successful in being merit selected for a promotions position as School Administrative Manager at O’Connell Street Public School. Student Leaders 2019 During the first two weeks of Term 4, Year 11 students heard speeches and voted for potential candidates for the 2019 MFHS Leadership Team positions. It is with great pleasure that I introduce the elected team to the community and I am certain with the calibre of personnel and the history of outstanding teams that this group will continue the strong tradition of student leadership at the school. School Captains: Rivir Candelario and Amelia Burge School Vice Captains: Indie Mahendran and Amy Broker-Towart SRC Presidents: Michael van Doorene and Nikita Byrnes SRC Executive: Connor Louden, Zoe Etchemendi, Domenica Antonutti, Isla Hogg Sports Captains: Hanif Vejdani and Sophie Westerbrink Mitchell Youth Leadership Forum Breakfast On Friday 26th October, I had the pleasure of attending the Mitchell Youth Leadership Forum breakfast at The Hills Lodge. The breakfast is an opportunity to celebrate the event and achievements of our students and to recognise the outstanding work of many of the volunteers who collectively put the program in place. The Mitchell Youth Leadership Forum is a two-and-a-half-day live-in program for Year 11 students who reside in or nearby the Mitchell Electorate. Students are nominated by their schools and the program is strongly based around the values of service to others, integrity and courage. The Forum is a chance for Year 11 students to come together and share thoughts and ideas on how to be great, inspirational leaders in their schools. At Vision Valley, students experienced the wise knowledge of exceptional leaders and speakers, as they shared their personal stories and secrets about what it is to be a great leader each and every day. Inspiring, challenging, engaging, and thrilling are words our students used to describe their experiences at the Forum held at the end of Week 1. A fantastic experience that has ignited the fire within many of our leaders to do more, do better and to work in the community. Well done to everyone involved.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – MS PLEDGER

Year 11 Students commencing the HSC This week Year 11 students were issued with their HSC Assessment Procedures and Calendar for 2018-2019. It is important that all students read this information carefully and make sure they fully understand all procedures for submitting assessment tasks. Unfortunately, during the Preliminary course I had to issue over 20 zeros for tasks because students failed to follow the correct procedures. To avoid a repeat, please read important documents and compulsory reading for students and parents alike. On Monday 5th November, Model Farms will hold the HSC In Focus Evening for both students and parents. During the evening we will hear from a past student and parent about how to best prepare for the upcoming year and some valuable advice on study and common pitfalls to avoid. The following website contains some fantastic information for both parents and students to help ensure that they start the HSC course the best way possible. http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/en/homework-and-study/planning-for-the-future/tips-for-starting-years-7-12 A reminder to all Year 11 parents, a number of students still have not returned their signed acknowledgment of the Senior Student Agreement. It is important that this note is returned as soon as possible. Senior Student’s and Cars PLEASE stress to your student the importance of driving safely when leaving school of an afternoon. While I can appreciate their desire to race home and study (or attack the fridge) it is essential that driving is very careful around school zones. All students who drive a car to school should have returned the “Permission to Travel to and from School by Private Vehicle”. A copy of this form has been included in this newsletter if your child still needs to return this to school. World Teacher’s Day Friday 5th October was World Teachers Day. It is a day to celebrate the efforts of teachers across the country. This special day has been an annual event now for more than twenty years and is one of the very rare ones which is recognised globally. We have a fantastic group of teachers and support staff here at Model Farms High School and every day they do things with individuals or classes which show their great love for your children and the passion they have for their profession. The day is an opportunity to thank and recognise the efforts of these special people for making a difference in our students’ lives. Have a wonderful week, Jennifer Pledger Deputy Principal

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – MS ELLIOTT

Year 12 started their HSC Examination journey on Thursday 18th October. It was wonderful to see them pumped and focussed and ready to take on their first exam, English. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to Year 12 and their families during this challenging time. Good Luck, Year 12! Just a reminder, that Year 12 has their sign out day on Monday 12th November. All text books need to be returned and outstanding fees need to be paid in order to complete this process. Whether you are a Royalist or not, I am sure that you would agree that Prince Harry (the Duke of Sussex) has made some great speeches during his time down-under whilst here as part of The Invictus Games. It was so meaningful, how he talked about mental health issues and his promotion of ‘it is ok to say that I am not ok’ and that ’you are courageous when you ask for help’. We strongly encourage all of our students to seek out help when they need it, from our dedicated welfare team. I would like to encourage our Model Farms families to remind their children about health and safety issues which are putting some of them at risk of serious injury, by using the truck and service roads to enter Winston Hills Mall. All students have been asked repetitively to enter the shops only via the public entrances. Please have this conversation with your child to ensure their safety. Centre management are monitoring this closely and will be reporting offenders. Staff Professional Development is a regular activity for all staff here at Model Farms. Half of our staff have now completed their annual refresher on practical CPR and Anaphylaxis, with the other half to complete in a few weeks. I would like to acknowledge their enthusiasm and professionalism which they bring to all Professional Learning. Have a great week Julie Elliott Relieving Deputy Principal

Wellbeing News As it is Term 4, we are up to “E” for Engagement in our schedule of WISE lessons for the year. I will be addressing the students on assembly about the opportunities they have at “the Farms” to get involved in the many leadership and extra-curricula activities in place. We value our students and appreciate those particularly who go above and beyond in helping make our school the great place it is! Students will have to the chance to discuss the topics below in their Year Meetings and WISE lessons.

The Importance of Sleep!!! ZZZZ

Are sleep and mental health problems linked? According to anecdotal evidence and research…yes! As sleep-deprivation increases so too does negative mood swings, learning problems and the ability to make considered decisions while undergoing stress. Combine this with the need for our teens to get more sleep than they think, a brain that is undergoing some serious renovations in adolescence and the prevalence of sleep-depriving activities such as screen watching before bed, it is no surprise we are seeing issues amongst students who are disengaged, sleepy, moody and struggling with anxiety in our classrooms.

Teens today are more sleep deprived than ever. Sleep-deprivation has doubled in the last 15 years from 35% to 70%. Teen mental health problems are increasing at a rate of 27% per year, a tripling since 2008! And yet, sleep is often a forgotten remedy in the medical world. Our “screens” play a major part in this as they delay bed times and emit “blue light”, blocking the release of melatonin (the chemical which makes us sleepy).

The 3 Pillars of Good Teen Health

• Good sleep • Regular exercise • Good nutrition

Together these protect mental and physical health and reduce the chance of a crisis at times of elevated stress. This is so pertinent right now as your teen is likely to be facing a number of stresses related to assessments and exams.

Year 7 – Respect (Anti-Bullying) Year 8 – Volunteering Year 9 – Leadership Year 10 – Ethics Year 11 – Civic Responsibilities

Page 11: NEWSLETTER - Model Farms High School...I would like to encourage our Model Farms families to remind their children about health and safety issues which are putting some of them at

Learning has 2 steps

• To acquire short term memory, good sleep is needed on the night prior to the learning taking place in class. A sleepy brain does not take in new information well.

• A well-rested brain then needs consolidated REM sleep on the subsequent night to file this learning into its long term memory banks.

It seems so simple – Get more sleep. But we all know this is easier said than done. So what can you do to help your teen (and yourself) get the sleep needed each night?

• Limit screen time to end an hour before bed • Don’t allow phones in bed – our brains becomes conditioned to think

it isn’t time to sleep • 9 hours of sleep a night is what science recommends for teenagers • Prioritise sleep! Lead by example

Past group that have attended Spectacular Science at Sydney University

FROM THE SCIENCE AND AGRICULTURE FACULTY Spectacular Science The Spectacular Science excursion will be running again this year on Wednesday the 21st of November, with 54 Year 7 students from the GAT class and Science Group receiving the first invitations. The excursion takes place at Sydney University where students will participate hands-on science activities such as catching creepy-crawlies amongst the scrub, use a microscope to see the animals in the finest detail and map the relationships between these tiny animals. Also students will learn the chemistry of making slime, and will freeze a range of materials in liquid nitrogen and smash them. They will also meet real scientists who’ll share what they are discovering about the world around us.

Agriculture – upgrade to the hydroponic area

The School Farm has had an upgrade. The Year 12 construction students have kindly laid a new cement floor in the hydroponics

area! This is an important upgrade for the farm as the hydroponic shed is where the students grow fresh leafy greens and it is important that this product is kept clean, the previous dirt floor did not provide for that. The new floor has also meant that the areas can be hosed down without turning to mud, another great advantage. Year 9 Agriculture have moved

production into the area and the next months will see a new crop of leafy greens. Thank you Construction Students. Our two new female lambs called Sparkles and Electra have settled in well and it is pleasing that these lambs have strong Black Suffolk traits and are evidence that the School’s sheep breeding program is heading in the right direction. Pablo a new male calf born earlier this year is growing well and students have been handling Pablo and teaching him to lead. This training will enable him to compete in the Castle Hill Expo next year. Pablo is a good example of the Red Poll breed and currently is growing well, despite the poor season. It is a credit to the student that he is coming along so well.

FROM THE ENGLISH FACULTY Term 4 is now in full swing as our Year 11 students begin their HSC journey through the study of Texts and Human Experiences. The term is a busy term and the students will be exploring a variety of texts including print and visual materials. This term is vital in building the foundations for the rest of the HSC course which will continue into next year. In Drama, the hunt for the perfect monologue or project idea has begun and the students have commenced the experiential reading of ‘Stolen’ by Jane Harrison and ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ by Lally Katz under the topic Contemporary Australian Theatre Practice. Year 10 English have been exploring the art of creative narrative writing and will shortly begin looking at the Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) genre. They have also been preparing for their final assessment in Week 3. The Drama troupe have been creating mischievous skits working busily on their clowning task. They’ve been playing with face paint, red clown noses and juggling while making each other laugh. Year 9 English completed their final assessment for the year, the Listening Task in Week 2 of this term. The rest of the year they will continue to explore the wonders of English through the study of Shakespeare and then continue into a filmic study. The Year 9 Drama students have also completed their Yearly Examination Essay on Stanislavski and Melodrama. They will spend the rest of the term exploring Commedia dell’ Arte and the origins of theatre. Year 8 English are currently studying significant speeches from history in preparation for their upcoming Multi-modal Task. Year 8 Drama are exploring their final topic of Ancient Greek Theatre by looking at the origins of theatre and some of the theatre classics. Year 7 have been discovering a wide variety of texts in their Wide Reading Unit and will shortly begin exploring some magical worlds in their fantasy genre study. Good luck to all students as they begin to wind up their studies for the year and remember: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” ― Dr. Seuss Congratulations to the following Faculty Merit recipients: Year 7 – Myles G, Olivia K Benjamin P and Ariane S Year 9 – Mia W Year 11 – Lara A, Amy B, Laura B, Nikita B, Awanti D, Jane K, Leisel P and Angellina S From the English and Drama Faculty

WHY HIRE A TUTOR? - Some children need individual attention. In todays over crowded classroom atmosphere, teachers will not be

able to provide this. - A tutor will prepare the child well for class tests and final exams. - Working with a tutor will help the child to develop a study schedule. - While studying, children easily get distracted with videogames, TV and other activities at home. A tutor will

help in minimising these distractions.
