On March 17th, American Corner and the Emily Dickinson Library at the CCNN organized a program for 22 schoolchil-dren about Saint Patrick’s Day. Asdrubal Canelo, BNC chil-dren’s program coordinator talk about Saint Patrick’s Day,

the story behind the celebration, why Irish people dress up in green for this holiday. After the lecture AC coordinator

showed a new craft to the students participating in this program.

AC Promotional visit

to Hedwig and Robert Samuel Foundation in Managua AC Coordinator and Education USA adviser visited the Hedwig and Samuel

Foundation facilities in Managua. The foundation provides full scholarships to disadvantage students and provide opportunities to study vocational careers for two years. The students enrolled in this school come from low income families in the urban area of Managua. They receive intensive English classes and their instructors have visited the American Corner host institution several times. AC Coordinator and Education USA adviser offered information about the Opportu-nity Grant Initiative, College Horizons and the new State Department programs for youth and explained the application process for each of this programs. Stu-dents also received information about the resources available at the AC for learners of English.

On March 17th, AC Coordinator and Education USA adviser conducted a promotional visit to the UNIVAL in Managua. A group of 55 students attended the presentation about AC services available for students of diplo-macy and international studies. The students also had the opportunity to learn about the new State Depart-ment exchange programs and other academic opportunities for international students during the presentation of the Education USA Adviser. They received brochures and handouts about the different programs and re-sources available at the American Corner and the EdUSA advising office in Nicaragua

On March 19 th Mrs. Huguette Thornton, U.S. Embassy Officer made a presentation to a group of 30 students and faculty members of the International Studies, Business administration, Psychology and Law school of the Universidad Iberoamericana de Ciencia y Tecnologia in Managua.

The conference was organized by PAS Managua as part of the ongoing Embassy Speaker Program to reach out to local audiences. The topic presented about Women's History Month and the role of women in public office in the U.S. She gave examples of selected American women of diverse back-grounds and how they started their careers in the public arena and how they achieved high positions in their field. Mrs. Thornton also talked about her own experience as a female diplomat working full time for the State Department's Foreign Service and how it is now possible for American women to choose their own paths in life.

American Corner coordinator gave students a brief presentation about the print and online resources available at the AC for learners of English and the wide selection of titles regarding diplomatic history and political science on the AC book collection for students enrolled on the International and Law schools.

Education USA Adviser gave an orientation about the educational exchange opportunities to pursue graduate studies in US universities and the Fulbright scholarship application process and how to obtain information in her advising office.

All participants received copies of the IIP's Women of Influence booklet in Spanish, College and Univer-sities in the USA, IIP's How Women gain the right to vote, copies of a post produced info packet with a recent compilation of America.gov articles related to WHM, information about Fulbright Scholarships and the Opportunity Initiatives program, and IRC brochures.

On March 20th, American Corner, IRC Director and BNC teachers visited the second largest city of Nicaragua to conduct a workshop for English Teachers. This workshop was organized in coordination with the Library of the Central Bank in Leon. A group of 44 English teachers from public and private schools, university faculty and Peace Corps Volunteers attended the session. The two instructors presented the topics “Visual Thinking: you don´t have to be an artist”, by Edwin Ordoñez, BNC teacher and “Performance Tasks: visual think-ing” by Franklin Tellez, BNC adult program coordinator. The session con-cluded with a presentation by AC coordinator and IRC Director about online resources for English Teachers and the Fulbright program scholarship. All participants received the latest copies of Forum magazine and an info packet with additional resources to use in their classrooms. Participants made spe-cials information requests to IRC director and asked for continuous training opportunities in the coming months.

The electronic newsletter e-Correo BIBLIOAZUL- March 2009, created by Mario Arce, Nicaraguan Librarian reported American Corner’s events:

-How to Create your Blog Training for Librarians at Universidad Agraria conducted in February 2009

-Conference Marketing your Library at the National University in March 2009.

Bolsa de Noticias and El Nuevo Diario Newspaper published a note about the International Women’s Day Lecture at UNICIT.

Local radio station in Leon reported a note about

the “Workshop for English Teachers” conducted in Leon on March 20th.

Meetings

On March 11, Elizabeth Leonard, visiting IRO from Mexico meet with Nubia Man-zanares, AC Coordinator. During the meeting AC coordinator gave a comprehensive

report of the programs conducted since her last visit to post. They also talked about the new programs and initiatives planned for the upcoming months and the

resources needed at the AC to continue its successful programs.

She talked about the use of the new social networks to advertise American Corner events and programs and gave her a virtual tour of the American Corner Blog cre-

ated to promote AC events and programs to local audiences

AMERICAN CORNER is joint initiative of the Central Bank, Centro Cultural Nicaraguense Norteamericano and the U.S. Embassy in Managua. It contains a collection of American Literature, Culture, History, U.S. Government and other periodicals on topics of interest.

AMERICAN CORNER has a small collection of audiovisual resources on topics like: American Music, American History, and Biographies. AMERICAN CORNER has two computers with Internet. These resources are located on the second floor in the Library reading area.

AMERICAN CORNER schedules movie presentations every week, or by visitor’s request. All our services are free of charge.

AMERICAN CORNER is open Monday thru Friday from 9:00-2:00pm
