NEWSLETTER NO. 56JULY 2017

Primary Years Programme - Middle Years Programme - Diploma Programme

Welcome back to the 2017/2018 school year. I hope you all had an enjoyable and relaxing break.

The start of the year presents a timely opportunity to focus upon what we want to achieve for the year. One of Stephen Covey seven habits of highly effective people is to begin with the end in mind. Students and staff have been challenged to do that this year. Beginning with the end in mind allows us to set realistic goals and provides a backdrop for on-going review of our progress.

Before I elaborate on this, I want to refer back to two significant events that occurred during the summer break. Firstly, my warmest congratulations to all those who participated in the World Scholar’s Cup Global Round in Vietnam. We enjoyed hearing about both your participation and success. Secondly, I stated in my last newsletter that we expected to gain our best ever academic results and this has proven to be the case. Our International Baccalaureate results, with our largest participation, saw our highest ever average. This is an improvement on last year’s pass rate. There are further details about these achievements on our website.

Speaking of the website, we have upgraded the format and have a version that can easily be accessed with android devices. We are working on an app for easy log in and communication. I will update you over the coming weeks.

We have an outstanding school but past success does not guarantee future success and organisations need to continue to focus upon what they do and how they do it to ensure continuous improvement. Every organisation is capable of improvement and we are certainly no exception. I have compiled the following short list of goals from our annual plan

so that you can get a sense of what we are striving towards as a community.

• We want to improve the quality of mathematics across the whole school.• We want to ensure that the data we gather on our own students’ achievement is triangulated with external data.• We want to ensure that all members of our community understand our mission and vision and that expected standards of behaviour are well understood and adhered too.• We want all stakeholders to experience clear guidelines and consistent responses.• We want to share a clear understanding about what Internationalism means at Sekolah Ciputra

I am very happy to extend a warm welcome to all returning community members as well as new staff members, students and parents. I am very happy and proud to use this newsletter to introduce all our new staff including our new High School Principal Mr Bret Olsen to the school. Mr Bret has already made a very positive start to his tenure! We are an unashamedly academic school and look forward to working together to ensuring the best possible learning outcomes for your children. Please take the time to sit with your child and discuss with them what they want their end of year to look like. It is once again our privilege to welcome you to another year of new adventures and learning in the PYP. We hope you have enjoyed a safe and relaxing holiday with friends and family.

To families who are new to Sekolah Ciputra, we would like to extend to you a warm welcome and we invite you to take full advantage of our partnership by getting involved in the life of the school whenever and however you can. To our returning families, welcome back! We are very much looking forward to working with you again as the PYP continues to grow from strength to strength. Your interest and support is key to this growth and central to the success of our students. As in previous years, we continue to focus on making our learning environment a rich and interesting one for students. Our teachers and support staff have dedicated a great deal of time to ensuring that inquiry remains at the heart of what we do and the vehicle through which we give our students the transdisciplinary skills, the lifelong love of learning, a focus on technology and a passion for the Arts that will serve them well as 21st Century learners. We continue to highlight our Learning Resource Centre as a Centre for Research and Collaborative Learning. Please take some time to visit the Resource Centre with your child. A Messagefrom the PYP

Sekolah Ciputra students had the opportunity to attend the World Scholar’s Cup Global Round in Hanoi from 26th June – 1st July. It was attended by the most number of scholars to date, with 3500 scholars from 40 countries around the globe.

A highlight for us was an invitation to lunch with Bapak Ibnu Hadi, our Indonesian Ambassador for Vietnam. We attended the lunch at the Indonesian Embassy Office. It was our first such invitation during a World Scholar’s Cup and it made us feel very proud.

Check out our website for our achievement summary.

My First World Scholar’s Cup Experience…

As my first experience of the World Scholar’s Cup, I had a great time.

There were ups and downs, good times and bad times. During the good times we agreed with each other’s opinions and we worked cooperatively. Other times I would either discuss with my friends about who should focus on specific subjects or when we should practice. At times I thought we weren’t doing great team work, but with effort we turned ourselves from down to up. We all had a great experience at the World Scholar’s Cup. We had easy times and difficult times but all our hard work paid off with great success.

During the debates we came up against different people from different countries and cities. Debating doesn’t mean you couldn’t be friends with your opponents. At the end of our debates, my friends and I would have a quick chat with the opposing team; congratulate each other then head on to our next debate room. I made friends with other people during the Scavenger Hunt, as the World Scholar’s Cup is an event that encourages you to communicate with others.

After all the events, we finished with the closing ceremony. During the closing ceremony the World Scholar’s Cup congratulate everyone with medals and surprisingly, unlike some other events, the World Scholar’s Cup fills us with such joy.

My Coding Course

Many people, it may seem, feel coding isn't important at all and maybe unnecessary. However, coding is very important in this modern age. Coding is basically the language that computers use to do certain tasks. Coding can be as simple as creating a message pop up on a screen all the way to creating the most complex video games.

During the holidays a group of eight students took part in a coding course organised as a holiday activity by the school. There are many types of code for example, Javascript, BASIC, DOS and Coffeescript which is what we learnt during the lessons. The lessons were fun, interesting and were not stressful at all. Back when my parents were young, they were taught how to code during elementary! This is why we need to encourage more people to try and learn how to code. Under-standing how to code is pretty much vital in many jobs such as web designers, software engineers and much more!

We look forward to this programme and the opportu-nity to code continuing in the school.

Where did you go to university? What are you/did you study? The University of Melbourne. I have completed a Bachelor of Science (animal science specialisation). Now I’m doing my Master of Agricultural Sciences (animal science specialisation)

What was the biggest challenge of moving to a new city/country?Memories. Especially memories of my last few months with my closest friends in high school. I found working my way through these memories quite difficult when I first came to Melbourne. These memories are of course really sweet, but when you first move to a new city, thinking about these can hurt sometimes as you miss your friends a lot.

What do enjoy most about your new environment?Melbourne is a very neat city with a convenient public transport system. For example, I only need to wait about 5 minutes to get a tram to go anywhere in the city. There are people from many different countries around me, so as an International student I feel a sense of belonging and was able to adapt quite quickly with my new environment.

What did/do you expect to do after graduating? After graduating with my Master’s degree, I want to get some work experience here in Australia to make the most of my studies. I will also constantly plan my career and find ways to develop my personality, skillset and employability.

Are you still doing that now?Of course! Whenever I have the time among my study schedule, I go online and research agricultural companies that interest me. After reading up about them, I then email and call the managers to discuss about my career intentions and employment opportunities at their companies.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Going to the gym, practicing public speaking and watching Korean dramas! I enjoy living a well-balanced life so getting the right amounts of study, workout, romance, and of course good sleep is essential.

Tell us something memorable from your time at Sekolah CiputraOne of the most memorable things during my time at Sekolah Ciputra is the annual soccer league. My team and I participated in the league every single year during our time at school and the experience was awesome beyond words. I really enjoyed the thrill and anticipation before

Where are they now?An Alumni UpdateName: Stevanus LieGraduation year: 2014

each game and the intense atmosphere of every match. All soccer lovers make sure you sign yourselves up for this!

What advice would you give to a graduating student?Enjoy your lives! And I mean seriously. Enjoy every moment of working late-nights for your assignments, every weekly assembly in the glorious arts hall, every single class (of course!) and every love story you have. Work hard but don’t overthink. Always do the best you can but openly accept failures as part of learning. Stand up and speak up! Be active and ask questions. Remember, silence is gold ONLY when everything else are diamonds!

Anything else you would like to share?Thinking of what degree and major you want to do in University after graduating from high school is a challenging task. Plan well ahead. From my experience, it is best to start planning from the end of Year 10. Always discuss with your parents as they are your best guide. Always, always, always follow your your passion! If you like maths than do it. If you like design pursue it. If you like agriculture (like me) then choose it as your career. Remember, we only live once!

I also would like to say hello to all my friends who are still studying at Sekolah Ciputra and to my wonderful teachers.
