Newsletter Issue No. 34 - Wednesday 9th November 2016
On behalf of the P and F we would like to extend a
huge THANK YOU to the students, parents,
grandparents, carers, teachers and volunteers for
their contributions and assistance in making our
2016 School Fair a huge success. Even with
inclement weather, we had a large number of
visitors to the school that helped raise a
considerable amount of money. The wonderful
support of our community for our bi-annual school
fair has helped this event become one of the most
effective fundraising events for our school. We
would now like to invite everyone who has been
involved in the organisation of the fair to attend a
Fair “debrief” next Tuesday 15th November at
9:15am.

who won first prize in the Raffle!

positive emotional, physical and social health.
You are invited to attend a parent information session

The session will also include tips, strategies and
resources for talking about relationships and sexuality.

Location: The old Grade 1 classrooms (Please come
to the office if you’re unsure where to go)
For further information, please contact Louise Bird.
WMMF Update (Words Make Me Fly):
Last week I met with the WMMF Group and we
continued to work on their narrative story. We also
opened an exciting package from Karen that contained
a number of little trinkets. One of which was an emu
egg! Karen had also prepared a lesson for the
students with regards to editing and polishing their
work. The aim of this lesson was to emphasise the
importance of correcting your work as the purpose of
writing is for someone else to read it and they will
only be able to read and understand your work if the
spelling and punctuation are correct.
BEE TICKETS
The Bee ticket draw happens every Friday afternoon
to acknowledge students who are following the “Four
B’s”.

THE WRITING PROJECT
The Writing Project is now two weeks old and we have
had a number of students accessing the website and
writing some powerful descriptive responses. Here are
a couple of examples from Task Two (Shark Tank):
Fear and excitement flooded through me as I
stood there in wonder. The beautiful grey sharks
swam in their tank looking magical and majestic.
It looked as though I could reach out and touch
them in their underwater world.
By Jarrah W(Year 3)
Oh my eyes! The bright flashing lights, they are
everywhere. They're about ten of us but yet this
is such a tiny little tank. All this screaming hurts
my sensitive ears; even in here. Help. I want to
go home to my land, my place.
By Kala R (Year 4)
I'm too young to be swimming with older sharks!
Where's Mum?! Where's Dad?! Ouch, those
flashing lights make me get instant headaches. Do
those eels have seaweed on? What are those
shellfish shrieking about? MAKE IT STOP! Ouch!
Another flash. What is that, Mum? Oh, it’s just
Bob the hammer head. I want to go, back to the
sea.
By Ellen F (Year 4)
I can see a group of swerving sharks and hear
loud yells in the background. I think the swerving
sharks are annoyed because the room in the tank
is too small and it has to fit in a lot of sharks. The
sharks make me wonder if they feel sad being
away from their families or if they have their
families with them.
By Eric McP (Year 5)
Log on to The Writing Project using this website http://
casas.tas.edu.au/vle/main.phtml with your student
username and password to read more responses or to
type your own! Task Three: now active!
Have fun, Mr McPherson.

Hello everyone,
What a week a week we had! Last week’s cooking class
focused on community and what it means to be members of
our local school community. The grade 3 classes had the
huge task of preparing salads and condiments for some of the
food stalls at the fair, and what an amazing job they did!
Salads we made were roast pumpkin, chickpea and roast
capsicum, a lovely green leafy salad, coleslaw and a broccoli,
fennel and green bean salad.
The salads were complimented on by many fair-goers. Well
done 3R and 3P/H!
A very big thankyou to the volunteers who helped out in the
kitchen during the day and all the lovely produce that was
very kindly donated.
Have a great week and til next time, keep cooking!
Jess Greener, SAKGF Kitchen Coordinator
Grade 3R and 3 PH went crazy over tomatoes last week.
We learnt that there are over 10,000 different varieties of
tomatoes in the world and over 3000 heirloom varieties. We
settled on planting just 10 different varieties around the
school – I wonder if you can find them all!!!
Happy gardening!
Anna Steinhauser, acting SAKGF Garden
Coordinator
Now that gardens are planted out with
tomatoes, zucchinis, pumpkins and cucumbers it
is time to turn your attention to beans. Now is
the perfect time to plant your climbing beans
such as scarlett runners, and bush beans of all
varieties – there are green, yellow and purple
ones out there, so have fun creating a vibrant
display in your garden.
Don’t forget your regular plantings of salads, and
annual herbs such as coriander and basil.
Happy gardening.

Kitchen Garden Program
This week in the kitchen and garden
This curry is a great way to keep warm in the weather. You can make it with either pumpkin or sweet
potato, depending on what you have available in the garden. Or you could keep the recipe summery by
substituting zucchini for the pumpkin.

The School Association is a voluntary organisation that supports the school in many ways. These include
consultation with the Principal on plans for school improvement, supporting improvement of facilities (e.g. car parking, proposed school developments), and supporting the school with management issues
(e.g. safety, school boundaries).
The School Association works with the Principal, the school staff and parents to build the communication
between the school and parents as well as building the capacity of the school community as a whole. The
Principal reports to the School Association on matters that affect the school at each of the quarterly
meetings.
An active School Association can be a voice for the school as a whole and can add input into decisions
that affect the school. For example speaking to Local Councils about issues to do with the school, writing
to government departments about matters that affect the school.
The School Association is comprised of parents, teachers and the Principal. A community Representative
can also be involved. All parents can attend the meeting (though only those who have a specific position
can vote on a matter).
The School Association is committed to the students of the school and can only do this with parents
joining the committee and being involved.
The AGM will be held on Tuesday 22nd November 2016 at 6.30pm, in the school staff room, please
come along.
Would you like to be involved?
THEN PLEASE COMPLETE THE BELOW FORM AND SEND TO SCHOOL ASSOCIATION, C/O
