FROM THE PRINCIPAL—
The past two weeks have been a busy time at Illawarra
Primary. The Welcome BBQ provided the school
community with the opportunity to catch up and celebrate the beginning of the school year. We have had our first
Early Childhood Assembly, which was a wonderful
experience, especially when Ms Howard got everyone,
including adults, moving and singing Haida, a song she has
been teaching the early years’ classes. Also, whole school
meetings have been held on the past two Mondays. Each
meeting has focussed on how students can best use their
break times through a Plan it, Play it and Being Part of the
Solution approach to problem solving when in the play-
ground. This week’s meeting also provided the opportunity
for House Captains to be announced. Well done to all the
students who were elected to lead their House.
As mentioned above, last week the School Association held
a very successful Welcome BBQ/Meet the Teacher
afternoon. It was a pleasure to visit classrooms and
obverse the level of engagement of parents with teaching
staff, taking the time to touch base and highlighting the
importance of positive relationships between home and
school. It was also pleasing to see the great number of students in attendance, keen to share their recent school
experiences and learning with their parents. A great deal of
thanks needs to be given to Emily Otten and the other
members of the School Association who helped with the
event. Thank you also to the teaching staff for preparing
their classrooms and for making the time to have these
important conversations and catch-ups with parents at the
beginning of the school year.
INTRODUCING THE SCHOOL FAIR IN 2020
We have been fortunate to secure the voluntary
services of the amazing Amy Groves-Bosworth from
House of A Event Management to be our Fair
Co-ordinator for 2020!!! Amy has shared with us that she is a fair
fanatic, so we are very excited to begin planning and organising for
this event.
VOLUNTEERS
We will need an abundance of volunteers, so if you would like to
be involved in ANY aspects of the fair, please email Amy at
Yesterday I had the privilege of listening to a
number of Grade 5 and 6 students’ speeches
explaining why they should be voted in as
members of the Student Representative Council
(SRC). I was very impressed and proud of every
aspect of this student leadership activity. The
students who delivered their speeches did so with
aplomb. Their messages and reasons for being
selected were heartfelt and honest, with all
expressing a genuine desire to support their
fellow students and to do so in a respectful and
inclusive way. What’s more, the sheer number of
students expressing a desire to take on this
student leadership responsibility highlighted how
highly they valued being a member of the SRC.
Thank you to all students who made a speech and
well done to all Grade 5/6 students for being a
highly respectful audience when listening to the
speeches.
Upcoming Events
Swimming Carnival Thursday 27th February - As has
been the case in previous years, this is sure to be
an exciting and successful day with great
participation from students. Details of the event
will be shared in next fortnight’s newsletter.
The First Grade 3-6 Assembly for 2020 – This
assembly will be held next Monday 2nd March
from 2pm. Mrs Brancher’s Grade 5/6 class will be
hosting and as well as class items, the SRC
representatives will be announced and
acknowledged with the presentation of their
badges.
School Association Annual General Meeting – As
advertised in last week’s Briefing, the School
Associations AGM will be held on Wednesday
25th March. We are asking for nominations for
general members and all the executive positions. I
would encourage anyone interested to complete a
nomination form included in this newsletter and
hand it into the school office before the above
date. Being an executive or general member
provides many wonderful opportunities to
support the school and I would encourage all
interested parents to make a nomination.
To conclude, I will be taking long service leave
from Monday 9th March until the end of term 1.
Whilst on leave, Mr Michael Hayen and Mrs
Cathryn Kelly-Bounds will be sharing the Acting
Principal role. Please don’t hesitate to contact
either Cathryn or Michael through the school
office if you need support or assistance with a
school matter.
SOCIAL SKILLS FOCUS
In our Whole School meeting this week we spoke about being part of the
solution, not part of the problem.
Students were asked to consider
scenarios that may occur in the
playground or classroom and how they
would solve these problems.
All classes will be referring to the
problem solving steps discussed and
display these in classrooms. Students are
encouraged to ask themselves “Am I
being part of the solution or part of the
problem?” when they are dealing with an
issue and teachers will also use this
language with students to activate their
ability to think independently and treat
others in a safe, fair and caring way.
HOUSE LEADERS
This week at our Whole School Meeting, our Grade 6 House Leaders were formally introduced to the
students and staff. There were a number of great speeches delivered to students from grades 3-6 last week, which
ensured the final tally of votes was extremely close. As leaders of their House, these students will be supporting and
developing a number of new initiatives and ideas planned for 2020, starting with today’s Illawarra Primary 3-6
Swimming Carnival. With these positions comes added responsibility, and we look forward to seeing these students
further develop their leadership skills and promote the values of Illawarra Primary through both their actions and
their words. Congratulations again to our 2020 House Leaders.

Department of Education’s Child and Student Wellbeing
Strategy.
The details for the survey are:
When: Friday 27th of March
Who: Grades 4-6
What do I need to do: You and your child don’t
need to do anything. The survey will be done in class
time and will not require your child to prepare in any
way.
A letter with more information has been sent home
with all Year 4-6 students, including Frequently Asked
