UTICA COLLEGE HEALTH PROFESSIONS AND EDUCATION NEWS | SPRING 2014
Health Studies
1. Cynthia Love Williams, Mary Siniscarco and Ahmed Radwan were honored as per the
Second Annual Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day as per the Women’s Basketball team.
They were nominated by one of our students as per the positive impact they have had on
their learning experience.
2. Madison Christoff, Health Studies student, published the following:
Christoff, M. (2014). The impact of a hand therapy screening on patients referred for
surgical opinion. Journal Of Hand Therapy, 27(1), 70-71. doi:10.1016/j.jht.2013.12.006
3. The Health Studies program is also starting a Wellness Initiative reaching out to the
college and eventually to the local community. Aaron Mallace, Mary Siniscarco and our
Health Studies students will be taking on this endeavor together. An event that we have
planned for Spring 2014 is linked with the Health and Wellness Committee here on
campus. Beginning April 1 the MVWC (MV Wellness Council) is putting together a
program called Healthy Wage Weight Loss Challenge. That will be a 3 month
competition to lose weight with cash prizes using their tools found on their website. The
Health studies department will be performing a Health Assessment before and after the
competition. It is about more than just weight loss, so we will be measuring Height,
Weight, Blood Pressure, Resting Heart Rate, Waist Circumference, Body Fat %, and
Body Mass Index. This will be a great college community event and a fantastic learning
experience for our students!
4. Aaron Mallace has been accepted as a Participant Level for the Adapting Curriculum for
Student Success (ACSS). He will continue to attend ACSS events and obtain the levels
of Associate and Leader.
5. Aaron Mallace has become the new Facilitator for the Health Studies Guest Lecture
Series. He will be responsible for arranging a guest lecturer once a month during every
semester. Commonly, lecturers are community professionals and leaders related to the
field of Health Studies.
6. Mary Siniscarco had an article published by Autism Spectrum Quarterly. ASQ is
described as “THE MAGAJOURNAL”-it combines the readability and interest of a high-
level magazine with the substance and depth of a professional journal. It is this combined
focus that distinguishes ASQ from other publications of its type, and creates an important
niche in the world of autism publication that has heretofore been lacking. Each issue
features a line of research and commentary aimed at helping parent, teachers, and
clinicians to translate this research into practice. ASQ is considered a highly respected
publication.

Throughout the year, families in the community drop off gently used books to the
Education Office on the UC campus. The books are then donated to local schools.
During the month of December, the Education Department collaborated with the UC
