FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPALI have pleasure in announcing that we have a new Principal.
Miss Dyanna Thommeny has been officially appointed to the position and we warmly welcome her to our school. As many of you would be aware, Miss Thommeny came to us from Western Sydney, via Mudgee High, where she was a Deputy Principal. She told us this morning, “I had no second thought in accepting the role and I am very proud to be leading Kandos High School.”
For those of you who aren’t aware, our telephone system died last Wednesday and as a result we’re in the process of purchasing a new system. In the mean time, all calls have been diverted to our school mobile, so you can still contact the school. If you don’t get through the first time, please call again or leave a message. We thank you for your patience.
Year 12 students will be conducting a BBQ to raise funds towards their Year 12 Formal on Saturday 23rd March at the School Hall. Please support their efforts. They will be selling sausage sandwiches and tea and coffee.
Work has been progressing on the installation of air conditioners around the school, as well as the garden near the library and painting of serveral classrooms has been completed. The installation of solar panels on the roof of A Block will commence on Sunday as part of the Cooler Classrooms Program.

Dear Parents,
On Friday the 15th March Staff and Students recognised National Day or Action against Bullying and Violence. The students completed a range of activities that incuded watching a short video on how to stand up against bullying, discussions on different strategies students can use to stand up for someone who is being bullied. Money collected from the mufti day are being donated towards ‘Dollys’ Dream’, to help others.
At Kandos High School, we aim to create a safe and supportive school community for everyone.
You are an important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively if it happens. Stopping bullying involves everyone.
We are sending you a pocket card from Bullying. No Way! with tips on what to do if your child talks to you about bullying. Parents know their children best and know the best way to tailor communication to their needs. Adapt these tips to what works for you and your child.
If your child talks to you about bullying:
1. Listen calmly and get the full story. Your calm response is important to allow your child to tell you all about the situation. After they’ve told you their story, ask questions to get more details if you need: who, what, where, when. Although you may feel some strong emotions about your child’s experience, try to keep calm to avoid more distress to your child.
2. Reassure your child they are not to blame. Many children blame themselves and this may make them feel even worse. You could say things like, ‘That sounds really hard to deal with. No one should have to put up with that.’ or ‘I’m so glad you told me. You should be able to feel safe at school; that’s not fair at all’.
3. Ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do. A critical part of your response is to avoid jumping in to solve the problem. While it is natural to want to protect your child, helping them to find their own solution is a better option. It helps them feel they have some power in the situation.
4. Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies. The website has tips and ideas for different bullying situations. One idea is to practise strategies at home to help your child feel more confident.
5. Contact the school. Your child may be reluctant for you to do this, so discuss the idea and reassure them that the school would want to know and is able to help. Make an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher and, if you need to, ask to talk with the principal. Contact the school immediately if you have a concern about your child’s safety.
6. Check in regularly with your child. Keep the conversation going. It can take time to resolve issues, so check in regularly with your child about their experiences and their feelings. Your ongoing support is important.
If you are looking for support for yourself to deal with a bullying situation, you will find ideas on the Bullying. No Way! website for parents. As well, please feel free to contact the school if you would like to discuss any aspect of our approach to preventing bullying.
Thanks for your support to make Kandos High School a great school for everyone.
Yours,
Dyanna Thommeny Principal

STUDY SKILLS HANDBOOK FOR MARCH: SETTING UP YOUR SPACE AT HOMEJust a reminder that our school subscribes to the study skills website www.studyskillshandbook.com.au which means that all parents and students attending this school can access the site at school and at home. Please take some time this week to log in and have a look.
The start of a year is a good time to reassess the space where you work at home. It is best to work in what-ever space has the least amount of distractions. Here are some points to consider:
1. Natural lighting is best, but if not possible then a good strong bulb in your room and a bright desk lamp is essential. What is the lighting like in your study area?
2. Fresh air and oxygen to the brain helps keep you mentally alert. What is the ventilation and air quality like in your study area?
3. Your work space sets the tone for the way you approach your study. Is your desk large enough? What is your working space or desk like?
4. The chair you use should be comfortable (but not so comfy you fall asleep) and adjustable to reduce strain on your neck and shoulders. What is your chair like?
5. When you are trying to memorise things, quiet is essential. No music (unless it is certain types of classical like baroque). How effectively can you keep your room quiet?
6. Storage is essential to help you keep your notes organised and sorted. Shelves, a filing cabinet, drawers. What is the storage like in your room?
7. It is important to keep your study area uncluttered and organised. A large pin board for notices and a calendar are useful. How organised is your study area?
8. How many distractions do you have in your room? Computer, phone etc? It is always a good idea to switch off or remove distractions before you start work. If you have to use your laptop make a conscious effort to not use personal technology during times when you are doing schoolwork. How well do you cope with the distractions in your room?
To learn more about setting up an effective work area at home (including the effect the colour of your room has on your ability to study and how to set up your room ergonomically) visit the Home Study Environment unit of www.studyskillshandbook.com.au.

BANKSIA EXCURSION TO CENTENNIAL COAL MINEStudents from Banksia, accompanied by Mr Nassis and Mrs Mundey, travelled to Centennial Coal Charbon Mine on 6th March as part of their HSIE subject “The History of Kandos”.
The excursion included a PowerPoint presentation presented by Mr Greg Mundey on the history of Charbon Coal, which also covered the commencement of mining in the area dating back to the 1920s to the start of the existing Charbon mine in the 1950s through to the Underground mine closure in 2014, Open Cut mine closure 2015 and currently “Charbon Mine Site Rehabilitation Project”.
Centennial Coal generously supplied a scrumptious morning tea.
The excursion also included a site tour which included viewing the old redundant bathhouse, closed entrances to the underground mine, the open cut mine and the “history in the making” of the mine site rehabilitation including earthworks process of reinstating the site back to its original state pre-mining activities. This included inspecting areas at different stages of rehabilitation dating back to the early 2000’s to recently completed areas during 2018.
Another stop on tour included an inspection of the Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Scar Tree site, that is protected and enclosed to preserve the site. To finalise the excursion the students were able to inspect the Train Loading Tunnel facility, where the coal was loaded onto trains ready for export overseas when the mine was operational.
A few of the students were also lucky enough to find some fossils.

EXPLORING EARLY CHILDHOODYear 12 Exploring Early Childhood students visited the Kandos Town Library to view the availability of local Literacy resources for children. The Library runs an excellent ‘storytelling ‘program every Friday with between 5-15 young children attending regularly. This is an opportunity for children to engage positively with books, having stories read to them in a bright, colourful and relaxed environment. The children also engage in fun, related, craft activities.
The program run by Anne, through Mid-Western Regional Council also offers a social outing for parents. All children and parents are welcome to attend this outstanding service. The Library also offers the borrowing of outstanding resources in the form of books for all ages and levels, CD’s and DVD’s.
A huge thank you to the Library staff for spending the time to discuss the ‘storytelling’ program to the EEC students.

Year 11 and Year 12 students attended the TEXSTYLE exhibition at Ultimo, Sydney, on Thursday the 14th March. The students travelled by car and train to view selected Band 6 HSC works and Portfolios. The technical difficulty of the presented work was amazing, allowing students to view the required standard necessary to achieve top results.
The students also visited the Akira Isogawa exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum. Isogawa is the selected designer of study for Year 12 and his showcased work was incredible, highlighting his cultural heritage and his fabric manipulation skills.
Lastly, the students viewed the HSC shape exhibition comprising Textiles, Wood, Metal and Design and Technology projects.
A little shopping at Haymarket completed our creative day. Congratulations to the students on their interest at each exhibition and their exemplary behaviour throughout the long day. A huge thanks to Leeanne Murray for helping transport the students to and from Lithgow.

I am delighted that this term, Kandos High School, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.
More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au
The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.
I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 11 March and 12 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.
A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school Monday, 25th March, 2019. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.
The consent form and FAQs are available in 23 languages.
