Camp Rumbug

I would like to congratulate all the Year 7 students for making the annual Camp Rumbug such a success. We know that this cohort approached their transition camp with enthusiasm and their efforts fostered a positive sense of cooperation and support. Team building activities will be further supported by our peer support students later this term.

On behalf of the students I would also like to thank Mrs Valentine and all the staff for their organisation and support.

Curriculum day

On Thursday teachers were fortunate enough to have Mr Glenn Pearsall present a very intense professional learning on high impact teaching strategies. This complements the work that Glenn began last year on the school’s instructional model. We appreciate the opportunity to hone skills and draw upon up to date research on teaching and learning which the school will be able to put into practice to support all students.

School Council Elections 2018

There were two nominations at the close of the second nomination period for parent representation on school council. As a result I have called for a ballot. The Ballot paper can be downloaded from Compass or collected from the Office. The Ballot papers are to be placed in the dedicated voting box at the General Office by 3pm on Monday 19 March.

Free after-school tutoring

I would like to encourage all students undertaking a VCE subject to consider the free afterschool tutoring. It is held in the senior study centre between 3.00-4.30pm from Mondays to Thursdays.

The subjects are available on the following nights;

Monday- Further, Methods, Specialist and General Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry,

Health and Legal Studies Tuesday- Accounting, Business Management, EAL, Further, Methods and General Mathematics,

Senior Interschool Round Robin “On Tuesday the 27th of February, the senior girls cricket team set out to Lum Reserve to play Mount Waverley in what could have been our last game of cricket for Highvale after 4 years with Ms. Dwyer. We were excited, a little nervous, but eager to see how we would go. We were sent into bat first, which was something different for us. We had outstanding efforts by Zoe Glazner, who got 29 runs, and Carly Hewett, who scored 21 runs. We managed to put a solid total of 96 runs on the board, after being bowled out in the 19th over. In terms of fielding, we had excellent results from several bowlers. We had multiple wicket takers, with Grace Zhang, Grace Bignell, Anthea Devitsakis and Carly Hewett all taking wickets. Despite our best efforts, Mount Waverley took the win by 5 wickets in the 15th over. It was a well-played game with great sportsmanship shown by both teams. All in all, we would like to give big thanks and shout out to Ms. Dwyer for the past 4 years and her constant effort to ensure we were always able to play at our best and represent Highvale to our best ability. It has been a pleasure playing cricket for Highvale and we are all going to miss being a part of this team.” Written by Ash Hall, Carly Hewett and Grace Zhang (students)

“Interschool volleyball was held at Oakleigh Recreational Centre. Our girls A Team was the first to play and everyone played amazingly but unfortunately lost, as did the B Team. The B Team were successful in some of their games and ended up in the final but were unlucky in the end. The boys team did well throughout the whole day, with scores very close, they could have made it into the final by winning only one more set. Overall it was a great day and despite the results everyone had fun!” - Written by Ruby, Mia, Jessica, Kaitlyn, Taylah, Kiara and Julia (students)

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC LESSON COMMENCEMENT All students who have returned instrumental music registration forms to the office, should have received lesson commencement notices and should be attending lessons according to the timetables displayed outside the music room. Lessons times should also appear on student’s digital Compass timetable. There are currently 2 positions still available for violin and woodwind. Any student who is still considering enrolling for instrumental music lessons should return an enrolment form as soon as possible to the music office.

All students who have ordered and paid for hire instruments should have received their ordered instrument by now and can bring this instrument to their regular weekly lessons. Students with Double Bass instruments should leave their hire instrument at home and use the school double basses in their lessons.

Each lesson, the instrumental music teachers will complete the Lesson Plan in Compass. Parents are encouraged to check this Lesson plan weekly to check the required work for home practice.

HSC ORCHESTRA REHEARSALS BEGIN

HSC Orchestra will begin rehearsal on Wednesday March 14th at 3pm. Students enrolled in this group should check their compass timetables for scheduled rehearsals.

NEVR CONCERT APPLICATIONS

The annual North Eastern Victoria Region (NEVR) youth concert will be held once again at Hamer Hall in Melbourne, on the evening of Tuesday May 22nd.

The concert offers an exciting opportunity for Highvale’s music students to rehearse with students from all around the North Eastern Region of the state and then perform at Hamer Hall as part of a major ensemble. Hamer Hall is one of the premier concert stages in Australia.

This year, the String Orchestra will be conducted by our very own Mrs. Janet Govan (strings) who will be assisted by Mrs. Suzi Reid who will manage the group. Rehearsals for this performance group will be held in the Highvale College theatre. We encourage all our eligible strings students to apply for the String Orchestra.

Students studying other instruments will also have this opportunity. There are a number of other performance groups in which interested students can be involved. Please note that the Secondary Choir does not have any minimum experience requirements for entry.

Application forms are due back to the music office by WEDNESDAY MARCH 14TH.
