Whilst we all face further uncertainty in terms of future local lockdowns, here in school we have had a positiveweek for all the right reasons. Y11 Revision Evening On Wednesday we held our Y11 Revision Evening after school. Thanks to our Directors of Learning in English, Maths and Science for their excellent presentations on how to revise for these subjects, and on the importance of effective and timely revision in preparation for exams. The behaviour and attitude of all students was exemplary, as we would expect. Y11 mock exams are soon after half term and many students are already evidencing a mature approach to their revision. Any student who has not yet started a clear revision programme needs to do so, and anyone who needs further support should either email me if they would like to attend a small group lunchtime session on getting started with revision or with specific techniques; or should see Mrs Turner and request a mentor. Whilst GCSE exams are scheduled to go ahead as normal in 2021, students need to be aware that teachers need a robust view of their current performance throughout the year. Y7 Settling-in Evening Around 100 families have already signed up for the Y7 Settling-in Evening on Wednesday 14th October, which is excellent. If you have not already done so, please sign up this weekend so that we can make sure form tutors have the right achievement information for each group of families with whom they will be meeting.Congratulations - Achievement points Y7 Rhys Pickering, Y8 Chloe Walker, Y9 Jessica Tancredi-Hardman, Y10 Ryan Thomas, Y11 Hannah Goggins. Well done also to staff who were recognised for their outstanding contributions this week: Mr Clayton for his endless patience with Google drive/docs/slides/ChromeOS and with chromebooks and other technical gremlins; Mr Bland, Ms Jan and Mr Williams for inspiring Revision Evening presentations; Mrs Bower and Mr Middlemas for maintaining high quality pastoral support despite staff shortages; and Mr Haigh for a brilliant Assembly about the vital importance of Maths and his journey to becoming a Maths teacher. A varied list! Face coverings - travel to school - Lancashire County Council The county council is urging pupils aged 11 and over to wear face coverings on school buses, throughout the journey, to help prevent the spread of coronavirus and keep children in school. It is the law now for everyone aged 11 and over to wear face coverings on public buses and is currently advisory on school buses. However following reports that many high school aged children aren't following the advice, Lancashire County Council is stressing the importance of wearing a covering on all forms of public transport including school buses. As well as asking parents to encourage their children to wear face coverings on school transport, they can also help reduce transmission of the virus by:

Providing hand sanitiser for their child to use on boarding and after getting off the bus.

If they pay bus fare in cash, having the right coins to minimise the need to handle change.

Reminding their child to keep a safe distance where possible.

Avoiding mixing between households indoors and keep outdoor mixing as low as possible.

Only using public transport only for essential journeys like school, work and health appointments and try to stay and shop locally.

It is estimated that around half of pupils live within 2 miles of their school and, where they can, families are being asked to arrange for pupils to walk or cycle. The current Switch to Cycling campaign is looking to build on an increase in people cycling during lockdown with lots of helpful information and advice for anyone thinking of cycling. For help and advice on preventing the spread of coronavirus visit https://www.lancashire.gov.uk/health-and-social-care/your-health-and-wellbeing/coronavirus/ For more information on walking and cycling and the Switch to Cycling campaign visit https://www.lancashire.gov.uk/roads-parking-and-travel/active-travel/ Finally, can I remind everyone of the message we sent out to all families and to staff on Monday: 'If you suspect anyone in your household has Covid-19 symptoms you must do the following: get them tested; isolate the whole household until the results are back. This means: children cannot go to school or nursery; adults cannot go to work; none of you can do the shopping or take part in social or sporting activities until the results are back. If the result is negative and nobody else in the household has developed any Covid-19 symptoms in the meantime, the household can then resume 'normal' daily routines. If the test result is positive, the household must follow the self-isolation guidelines.' Have a good weekend and stay safe. G Middlemas

@WCHS_PE First night of year 7 inter form football. Fantastic to get some competition even though we can’t compete against local schools. We are all missing the tournaments, matches and competitions.

33 of our year 11 students have completed DofE Bronze! We had some amazing weather. Although it wasn’t like our usual expedition they did amazingly well in difficult times. Well done to staff and students.
