Dear Parents/Caregivers, Students and Staff, After getting off to good start in those hot weeks our classes have settled well with all staff now in place. Teachers are supporting students to make a good start in each of their subjects. Parents should be asking for their son’s/daughter’s assessment plans for each subject and signing these, so that parents are better able to provide support at home. All assessment plans will be finalised over the next couple of weeks. We encourage parents to discuss with their young people these plans and the work they are doing. Parental support is sought to encourage students to do their homework on a regular basis. Suggested hours per night are: years 8 – 9 about 1 hour per night, years 10 – 11 about 1½ hours and year 12, 2 – 3 hours per night. Time spent varies for subjects studied and the topics. If parents are concerned about too much or not enough homework please contact either the subject or Home Group teacher. What’s on this term? Acquaintance Evenings Next week are our Acquaintance Evenings which are important for meeting and getting to know Home Group teachers and Year Level Managers as well as some subject teachers. Years 8 – 10 - Monday 16th February 7 – 8.30pm Years 11 – 12 -Tuesday 17th February 7 – 8.30pm. Athletics Carnival Friday 6th March at 7.30am – 1.30pm enables our Athletics Carnival to avoid the heat of the day. Students enjoy both athletic and novelty events with opportunities for fund raising. Parents and caregivers are VERY welcome to attend and participate in the atmosphere and support their family members and their friends. Essendon Exchange This year the Essendon Exchange will be in Melbourne and the teams are currently being organised with practices occurring during lunch times and after school. Details will be provided for those students who will be involved, however it may be helpful to start saving for the fares now. Governing Council The first meeting will be held on Monday 16th February 7.00pm – 9.00pm, R Building, Room 10, the conference room. Prior to the meeting staff and parents are invited to meet members of Governing Council (GC), and refreshments will be available. The agenda includes professional learning schedule for GC members, discussions about the Site Learning Plan for 2009, the Hot Weather Policy and the Council of International Schools (CIS) self evaluation and improvement plan. New Staff for 2009 A number of teachers are new to the school this year whilst others who were on contracts last year have returned. We are very pleased to welcome these teachers back to our school. Repeated lateness to school is a serious risk factor to academic success. Teachers generally begin each lesson with ‘up front teaching time’, this first 10 minutes is vital. Students who are present will understand the expectations for the lesson, and are more likely to be on task and behaving appropriately. Also, new subject content is often explicitly taught in the first part of the lesson, with the latter part of the lesson used to consolidate the new skills or knowledge.

If your morning routine as a family is making it difficult for you to ensure your child is at school when the first bell goes at 8:40am, then it would be highly beneficial for their academic success if you could try some new strategies so that it can be achieved each day.

This year we are utilising a new ‘Points Based Database’ to record and monitor misbehaviour, with a goal to continuously improve the

standards that we set at Charles Campbell Secondary School. In exceptional circumstances where lateness to school is unavoidable please provide your child with a note to explain. If a student presents to Student Services late to school without a note, they will lose points on the database. The points deducted increase the later they are to school.

If you would like to discuss any issues relating to lateness and your child please ring the school and ask to speak to your child’s Home Group teacher, or to a Year Level Manager.

What we want as a school, and I’m sure you want as parents and caregivers, is to provide our young people with the life skills and work habits to give them the best possible chance of academic success and a future full of positive options.

Shane Willsmore - Assistant Principal

Hello everyone! Well it’s 2009 and February already! For those of you who are new to the school community and for those of you who missed my articles last year, I am Josh Champion, the Christian Pastoral Support Worker here at Charles Campbell. The temptation for me is to call myself a Chaplain because that’s what my role used to be called. But I think Christian Pastoral Support is a good title because it clearly defines what I am here for and that is to give pastoral support to the school community. I am a resource available for all people in this school community: students, families and teachers.

This year I will be running some programs such as, Club 8 – a lunchtime activity for year 8 students, bringing guest speakers and seminars to the school, coaching some sporting teams and much more. I also aim to connect the school with the local community, offering programs from local welfare agencies and churches. I’ll take this opportunity to say how lucky I feel to be a part of Charles Campbell Secondary School because I truly believe that this is a great school and one that I am very proud to be a part of. So if you have any questions or ideas for me, or if you’d just like to chat, I’d love to hear from you. You can drop me a line at [email protected]. Kind Regards, Josh Champion
