PAGE 2 Educating For Success BUSY TERM To help your students to be organised it is helpful if parents support the students with being abreast of dates and ensuring that all notes are handed in on time. It wold be terrible for students to miss important things because of lack of organisation. Please check the portal and facebook regularly as a lot of information is posted on these two places. GOOD LUCK To our teams competing in both the State Athletics in Melbourne and Regional Sports in Bendigo next week. We will have updates on facebook as these events take place.

Assistant Principal’s Report

Mindfulness at ISC This term we have extended our program to include Year 8 and Year 9 students undertake mindfulness training with the Smiling Mind program. A big thank you to our English and Humanities staff who are running the sessions with our students and who join our Maths staff who are continuing the program with our Year 7 students. Please read the article in the newsletter that has more information about the benefits of mindfulness training. Year 10 Graduation Ball This year our college captains will be leading the bulk of our Graduation Ball arrangements. We’ve had an initial planning meeting and our office staff, along with year 10 coordinator Kara Taylor and I will assist. Year 10 students are reminded that the Graduation Ball will be held at Club Da Vinci on Thursday 7th December from 6.30 pm to 12.00 midnight. This means our Year 10 students should be keeping up to date with the school work, meeting deadlines, using the portal to check due dates of assessments and accessing homework club and classroom teacher assistance. We’ve also seen dancing lessons start in Year 10 Health/Pe classes gearing up in anticipation of this great night which is the culmination of four years at our school. College Captains, House Captains and Peer Mentors 2018 Our process is underway for the selection of student leaders in 2018. Congratulations to those Year 9 students who have taken the time to complete the application forms and nominate for a leadership position. School for Student Leadership 2018 We were notified late last term that our school was successful in its application for current Year 8 students to apply to attend School for Student Leadership in 2018. Our Year 8 Coordinators, Todd Hughes and Jarrod Kee, have held an information session about this great opportunity for our students this week.

PAGE 5 Educating For Success SRC Update Youth Drug Forum – 10th October 2017 For the past two terms, Irymple Secondary College’s school captains have been attending regular meetings at the Mildura Police Station with school leaders from Chaffey SC, Merbein SC and Coomealla HS to organise the 2017 Drug Forum. The forum is held every year to give all year 9’s in Sunraysia an understanding of the effects of drugs and alcohol and how to help someone in this situation. Our captains were very involved and contributed to the Forum by writing and performing a skit about the dangers of drugs and alcohol at a party. We are very proud of their involvement in this event. Spring carnival was held on the last day of Term 3, 22nd September. If you want to see the Irymple Way in action, Spring Carnival is the perfect example. During Term 3 all forms and FLO worked on their ideas for a stall for Spring Carnival – our traditional end of term celebration and school fundraiser. This planning paid off with a fantastic day had by one and all. The weather was exactly what we ordered – warm and sunny - and there was a range of activities and yummy food stalls for everyone to enjoy. Students enjoyed traditional Spring Carnival activities such as the Sponge Throw and new activities such as pick a card and the sports arcade. Laser Force was present and popular again this year as well. For foodies there was a range of delights – Mallee Burger Van, pizza’s, icecreams, snow cones, home made cakes and slices, smoothies, milkshakes and so on. Entertainment was also top notch with a Spring Idol concert showcasing some of our very talented students at the end of the day. The concert was a great way to end our day and everyone enjoyed the atmosphere in the courtyard outside Café OVERFLO during the show. The gorgeously talented Fiona Henry won the competition followed by Kendall Dew and then Shae Gathercole-Mills and Megan Hammond. Spring Carnival is a fabulously fun and successful day at ISC and happens because of the work that the students, their teachers, school support staff, and family & friends put in - whether it’s planning, promoting, seeking items for stalls, donating items, helping on the stalls, counting tokens, banking money, all of these and more make our Carnival the great day it is and remind us of the wonderful community we are. This year the Carnival raised $ 2749.00 and the most profitable stalls in each year level were: 7 B – Snow Cones 8 C – Mallee Burgers 9 C - Pick A Card 10 E – Fizzy Pong All proceeds will be used for purchasing student resources. The SRC will be seeking feedback from the school community on ideas for this in the coming weeks. WOZ Day – Friday 13th October 2017 Last Friday, the SRC held a casual dress/dress up day to support our upcoming school production – Wizard of Oz! There were prizes for the best dressed – won by Nick McIntosh in Year 9 and Ms Corless – and lots of green themed food and drinks from Café OVERFLO. Money raised will go towards helping out with the cost of the production. Make sure you come along it will be a great performance! Colour Run – 24th November 2017 The SRC is organising a colour fun run for Friday 24th November to also raise funds for student resources. Information will be coming home in the next week with information about the Colour Run. We are encouraging students to set a personal fundraising target and then seek sponsorship from their family and friends to win great prizes for themselves and raise funds for student resources.

Mindfulness at Irymple Secondary College Mindfulness – for those who are unsure – is the practice of being present in the moment. If that sounds too vague, it means giving yourself room to take a step back from what you are doing and breathe or ‘to examine the weather pattern in your head’. It’s a special way of paying attention that can help with how you cope with everyday life, or bounce back from tough times. It involves:

focusing on the present moment

not worrying about anything that went on in the past or that might be coming up in future

purposefully concentrating on what’s happening around you and to you

not being judgemental about anything you notice Research has demonstrated that people who are mindful:

have a better memory

are able to learn more easily

are able to solve problems easily

are happier

have decreased anxiety and depression

are less angry or moody

have better breathing

have lower heart rates

have improved circulation

have better immunity

sleep better

and are better able to cope with pain. Schools are naturally very busy and frenetic environments, so practicing mindfulness can have a big effect on students in terms of focus, kindness, empathy and self-understanding. This term our Year 7 students will be continuing with the mindfulness program in Maths classes. Our Year 8 and 9 students will be commencing mindfulness in their English and Humanities classes.

Anyone can download the free Smiling Mind app. https://smilingmind.com.au/smiling-mind-app/. This will provide you with more information as well as age specific meditation guides.

We have had reports of head lice being about. Unfortunately this is an issue that can affect anyone – it is not an indication of poor hygiene, but it is important to treat them effectively. If you would like more information than is included in the article below, please contact the front office. Head lice (nits) - treatment and control (From the Better Health Channel www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au) Head lice are small, wingless insects that live, breed and feed on the human scalp. They do not carry or transmit disease. They have been around for thousands of years and, given the chance, will move from head to head without discrimination. It is important to treat them effectively if found to avoid them spreading from person to person – and schools are a perfect environment for them to spread around! Head lice facts A female louse will lay between three to eight eggs (nits) per day in the hair, within 1.5cm of the scalp. These eggs resemble dandruff but cannot be brushed off. The adult head louse has six legs and is about the size of a sesame seed. The colour varies but they are often greyish white or tan. The move very quickly so can be difficult to spot. Finding head lice Half of the people who have head lice never scratch their head so itching is not a reliable sign. Step 1 Comb hair conditioner on to dry, brushed (detangled) hair. This makes it difficult for lice to grip the hair or run around. Step 2 Wipe the conditioner from the comb onto a paper towel or tissue. Step 3 Look on the tissue and on the comb for lice and eggs. Step 4 Repeat the combing for every part of the head at least four or five times. Step 5 If the person has been treated recently and only hatched eggs are found, you may not have to treat them again since the eggs could be from the old infection. Step 6 If lice or eggs are found, the person should be treated. Treating head lice The two preferred treatment options available for treating head lice are the ‘conditioner and comb’ method and the use of an insecticide. Using insecticide products - Any head lice treatment product you choose should carry an Australian Registered or Listed number. Talk to your chemist about suitable products. No treatment kills 100 per cent of the eggs so treatment must involve two applications, seven days apart. The conditioner and comb method - If you choose not to use an insecticide, the comb and conditioner method described under ‘Finding head lice’ can be used every second day until no live lice have been found for 10 days. Preventing head lice - There is no product available that prevents head lice. However, tying long hair back and checking weekly for lice, using the conditioner and comb method, can help prevent the spread.

Dear Parent/Guardian/Carer, Head lice or eggs are suspected to have been detected on your child and it is very important for you to treat your child as soon as possible, using safe treatment practices. Please see the attached pamphlet, Treating and Controlling Head Lice, from the Department of Human Services. This pamphlet has informative guidelines regarding detecting and treating head lice and eggs.

It is very important for you to notify Irymple Secondary College and to advise when appropriate treatment has commenced. It is important to note, that health regulations require that where a child has head lice, that child should not return to school until the day after appropriate treatment has started. Please note that this refers only to those children who have live head lice and does not refer to head lice eggs. Please complete the below form and provide this to Mrs Jo McQuinn, on the return of your child to school.
