Desert Pea MediaMaclean High School has been working with Desert Pea Media this week to produce a dance and song film clip featuring several of our Aboriginal students from Years 8 - 11.

Desert Pea Media is a well-known film company who specialise in making music videos. The students, Elders and community members worked through several idea sessions in the workshops and the Elders shared their own experiences with the students in terms of growing up and what life was like for them when they were the same age as our students.

The students have been working on lyrics that depict the community and the surrounds that they call home, which is on Yaegl land. It has been a wonderful oportunity for the students, staff and the community to work with the Desert Pea Media crew and we very much look forward to seeing our students on the big screen. Woody Head Rock Platform ExcursionOn Tuesday, 12th June Year 11 Biology students donned their hats and sun screen and boarded the bus for an educational adventure to the Woody Head Rock Platform. This was actually compulsory fieldwork required to complete an assessment task for Module 4 Ecosystem Dynamics. The students gathered data which they used to complete a scientific report. They studied the biodiversity of the area, analysed the biotic and abiotic factors in the environment, calculated the distribution and abundance of organisms, constructed a food web and described adaptions of the rock platform. Mrs D Hollis.

Invitation to all Year 6 ParentsThere is an information evening and tour of Maclean High School planned for Tuesday, 7th August, 2018. Year 10 Stellar DayOn Friday, 8th June, thirteen Year 10 students attended an Engineering Day at Southern Cross University, Lismore as part of the “Stellar, Get Into Uni” Program. Here is what the students had to say:“I had a great day. It was so informative”.“The activities were great but some of the talking bits were boring”.“The food was good”. “Yeah, it was really good”. Mrs Bowie.

Year 9 AgricultureYear 9 Agriculture students at Maclean High School have been growing vegetables. They spend many lessons weeding, planting and fertilising their crops and developing their horticultural skills. The course has developed their understanding of the different types of vegetables that can be grown in the Clarence Valley and we will hopefully see more home veggie gardens popping up around town. Students would eventually like to sell their produce, however, the goods are so yummy they end up in our tummies!

Smart Arts 2018On 21st June the CAPA Department produced ‘Smart Arts 2018’. This was a night to show off the talents of our junior Creative and Performing Artists students. In previous years the night has been held in the open air of the quadrangle with a festival type of feel. This year it was decided to move the showcase into the school hall and create an informal, relaxed, creative atmosphere. The response was fantastic. The performers, the artists and the audience loved the new ‘vibe’ and appreciated the intimate setting. Musicians from Year 7 to Year 11 entertained the audience, along with drama and dance items from students in Year 9 and Year 10. Art, Photography and Ceramic works from Year 7 to Year 10 students were also on display. A massive thank you goes to all our talented junior Creative and Performing Artists students who contributed to the night. Also a big thank you to the staff who spent hours setting up and packing away for the night. Mr Matt Fisher.

The SRC ran a fundraising day for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter on Monday, 2nd July. The day began with a special assembly; donations were colllected, photos of all those dressed in red and yellow were snapped and the student body was captivated by the story told by Zeke, who is a representative from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. He mentioned that they now have a bigger, more expensive helicopter that is on standby to respond to emergencies in our region. He highlighted the importance of charitable organisations, such as the $500 contribution made by Maclean High School, in ensuring that patients get a free service when accidents or emergencies occur. A sausage sizzle at lunch was enjoyed by over one hundred staff and students. Thank you to all those who donated!

Australia’s Biggest Morning TeaThis year was the 25th year of fundraising for the Cancer Council’s fundraiser for cancer research. The Maclean High School staff supported this fundraiser by holding an event during the normal Wednesday morning tea meeting in the Library on the 23rd May, 2018. Many staff generously baked delicious sweet and or savoury treats and each staff member donated $5 on entry. Four lucky door prizes were also donated for the event as was the raffle money. Congratulations Maclean High School, approximately $350 was raised on the day. Mrs D Hollis, SRC Coordinator

Coffs Harbour Botanic GardensOn Wednesday, 20th June the enthusiastic Year 11 Biology students travelled to Coffs Harbour Botanical Gardens to engage in hands on learning to achieve curriculum outcomes for Model 3 Biological Diversity. The students gained access to experts from a variety of locations, including The Australian Museum. This was a great opportunity for the students to observe and interpret fossil specimens including platypus skulls and diprotodon feet and skulls.

During the session with the Taronga Zoo staff the students interacted with live animals including a very shy possum, an Argentinian tortoise, a python and a shingle back lizard. The students also enjoyed a scenic amble through the gardens which allowed them to study the evolution of mangroves and eucalyptus species. An enjoyable and educational day was had by the staff and students involved.

Both this excursion and the Woody Head Rock Platform Excursion formed Year 11 Biology Compulsory Depth Study hours. Mrs D Hollis.

SPORT NEWS North Coast Regional Cross Country TrialsOn Wednesday, 13th June, 20 Maclean High students ventured to Nana Glen to run in their respective age groups in the cross country races for the Northern Rivers Zone team. The races varied from 3000m in the lower age brackets to 8000m for the 18 years boys. A fantastic day enabled all students to run their best and, as a result, 8 students have now gained selection into the North Coast Representative team to run at Eastern Creek, Sydney on Friday, 27th July. Congratulations to all students on their sportsmanship and efforts on the day and a special congratulations to the following students who have made selection. Their results are as below:Kelsey Sheehan 18yrs 2nd; Jack Earle 18yrs 9th;Finn O’Neill 16yrs 7th; Ari Bradley 16yrs 8th;Carissa Miltiadou 14yrs 9th; Kele Jeffrey 13yrs 4th;Nick Connolly 12yrs 6th; Zane Lowe 12yrs 7th. Mrs Kylie Lowe.

Aboriginal Dance Group Recently a group of twelve students were invited to perform at Shell’s Family Day Care Centre at James Creek. Other family day carers had joined for the day.

The students performed two dances - The Cleansing Dance and The Brolga Dance for the children and staff. The younger kids became involved by getting their faces dot-painted and doing animal dances. We finished off with a colouring sheet.

A big thank you to Shell’s Family Day Care for providing morning tea, and also to our student dancers whose behaviour was outstanding. Miss Krystal Randall, Mrs Anjanette Warburton and Mr Sam Kapeen.

CHS SurfingMaclean High School put together a formidable surfing team for the 2018 CHS Regional Surfing Titles. The team consisted of Max Hutchinson and Jake Bill in the U16’s boys, Lachie Culton and Dakoda Walters in the U19’s boys and our lone girls competitor, Lilli Young, who competed in both the U16’s and U19’s events. All students surfed exceptionally well in the glassy but tricky 3-4 foot conditions at Lennox Head beach. A big congratulations goes to Lilli Young who surfed cleanly and confidently into 3rd place in both the U16’s and U19’s girls events. Congratulations also to Dakoda Walters who was ripping throughout the event posting high scores consistently and producing a scintillating aerial manouvre in the final to clinch the win in the U19’s boys for Maclean. Thanks to all the parents of our team for their support on the day. Mr Mark Ramsey.

A message for all Parents/CarersCould all visitors, parents/caregivers who are entering the school grounds please do so via the front office.

A Message from the Principal A reminder to parents that the first day of school next term will be Tuesday, 24 July. Staff will be present at school on the Monday completing training and professional learning but this will be a pupil free day.Our school has a simple but serviceable school uniform. It is supported by the P&C, SRC and the school as a whole. The wearing of school uniform is recorded each day when teachers mark the roll. It is an expectation that students are in full school uniform each day. We have also provided student assistance to many students and their families to help everyone meet the uniform requirements for our school. I encourage everyone to make a serious attempt every day to be in full school uniform.

This week Year 10 students received a subject selection booklet. This lists all the subjects being offered by Maclean High School for study in 2019. You will notice there is an extensive list of subjects offered by the school, which we believe is one of the many advantages of studying in Years 11 and 12 at our school. This large range of subjects is supported by a number of knowledgeable and dedicated teachers. It is this large offering of choice in the curriculum which makes Maclean High School a desirable place to study for Years 11 and 12.

The Rural Fire Service Cadets had their graduation ceremony this week. This program fosters a lot of desirable values in students and promotes leadership, teamwork and compassion. This program will be running again at Maclean High School next year. Many thanks must also go to Mr Neville Lange for his efforts in the running of this program at school and the efforts and time of the RFS volunteers.

I would like to make mention of the Clarence River Arts Festival taking place at Maclean High School during the holidays. There will be displays from many of the talented high school students. Student items such as drama, music, art and chess will be on display from the students. This is a major focus of the Maclean High School plan focussing on community partnerships between the school and local partners. Mr Greg Court, Princial.

SRC Pyjama Day PJ Day was held on Thursday, 7th June. The weather was cold and grey so many students took the opportunity to stay in their pyjamas all day. Year 11 SRC representatives cooked a sausage sizzle at lunch with the profits to be used for new seating around the school. They sold 150 sausages in 13 minutes. Thank you to Colbie Cameron and Sophie Ballard - bread stacking gurus and extraordinary saleswomen; Mathew Duggan - BBQ king/super sausage sizzler; and Duncan Fischer - big red of all trades and expert onion chef. Mrs D Hollis, SRC Coordinator.
