PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Last week I had the pleasure of attending the NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards at Club Burwood RSL. Two of our school community members were nominated for awards. Irene Browne has been the leader of the P&C Uniform Committee for some years now and every Tuesday and Thursday works in the Uniform Store with other volunteers. Irene is very giving of her time and is always willing to ‘go the extra mile’ to help parents with purchasing uniforms, particularly new parents to the school. Irene is also a volunteer with Burwood Soccer Club and therefore a very worthy recipient. With large non- scripture groups each week during scripture time, Jo Carlisle saw the need to offer some alternative for students at CPS. Jo investigated setting up ethics classes through Primary Ethics, advertised for volunteers, supported the interested volunteers through training and liaised with the school to implement the program. We now have a number of classes running each week with trained volunteers working with the children to develop

their confidence and skills to talk about ethical issues. As our local coordinator, Jo gives of her time to ensure our students have access to a quality program each week. Congratulations and thank you to Irene and Jo.

On Thursday night many parents and staff took the opportunity to attend the presentation given by Michael Carr-Gregg. Michael outlined the growing incidence of mental health issues amongst children and teenagers. He provided information and practical advice and strategies to support parents to develop resilience in their children. The feedback I have received has been very positive and also affirms the school’s focus on supporting student wellbeing. It is our hope to provide more quality speakers in the future and we would appreciate feedback, through the online evaluation, on topics of interest to our parents. Friday night was the P&C’s Trivia Night and it was a great opportunity for parents to socialise and have fun. The P&C Social and Fundraising Committee did a great job, as usual, with an amazing array of prize packages for the raffle and some fun activities/games for everyone. Many thanks goes to the committee and quiz master Alan Jones. Finally, on Friday night I spoke briefly about supporting the Kurilowicz family in their efforts to have a car modified to enable dad, Ariel, to drive. The following link will lead you to further information. Let’s ‘pay it forward’.

ReachOut Worry Time ReachOut WorryTime is an app for managing the time you spend worrying. The app is based on a widely used cognitive behaviour therapy technique called stimulus control training. This involves teaching yourself to contain worry to designated periods. Based on the theory that constant worry is an embedded thought pattern that can be changed with practice, the exercise of scheduling a time to worry helps you to practice better thought habits - such as being aware of thought patterns, letting go of thoughts that are not constructive by postponing them, and applying problem solving techniques during the scheduled worry times. Free.

Photo Speak PhotoSpeak™ app can transform any portrait photo into a moving 3D avatar that repeats your every word. Students can record themselves saying positive affirmations and play it when they are anxious/ worried. Free.

Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock Sleep Cycle is an intelligent alarm clock app that tracks your sleep patterns and wakes you up in light sleep - the natural way to wake up, feeling rested and energized. No need to place your device in bed - Sleep Cycles uses sound analysis sleep tracking.

MoodGym Online- MoodGym is an online interactive cognitive behaviour (CBT) and interpersonal based therapy program used as a preventative and self-help tool for young people experiencing mild to moderate levels of depression or anxiety. Moodgym is designed to be used by people who would like to

prevent mental health problems or manage problems which are troubling but not incapacitating. Available to all Australians free of charge. Need to create an online account.

The Brave Program The BRAVE Program is an online program for the treatment of anxiety in young people. The BRAVE Program is based on Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and has been running in Australia for over 13 years. Therapy techniques used in this program include: relaxation training, identification of emotions and thoughts, positive self-talk, coping skills, problem solving and graded exposure. The BRAVE program has recently been converted into a self-directed therapy program (BRAVE Self-Help), which is now freely available to all Australian young people, aged 8-17 years old, and their parents. The program is suitable for all types of anxiety. There are four different programs available: one for children aged 8-12 years, one for teenagers aged 12-17 years, and one for parents of children and teenagers of these age groups, respectively. Free of charge to all young people and parents who live in Australia.

SOFTBALL SYDNEY EAST GALA DAY Well done to these Year 6 students: Harry McArthur, Lee Howlett, Megha Rana and Audrey Guo who were chosen to participate in a Zone softball gala day in Wooloware at the end of last term. These fantastic players, after a tryout, were selected into the Western Suburbs (WSPPSA) softball team. During the gala day students play around 4 games against other zone teams in Sydney. The day is also used as a trial for the regional team. Seeing the students and their skills in action was a wonderful sight to behold. All students played with skill, dedication and enjoyment! Special congratulations goes to the WSPPSA girl’s team who were joint winners of the day. Congratulations goes to Megha Rana who was shortlisted for the Regional team. She went to the Regional softball tryout on 25 July and was successful in being selected for the Sydney East PSSA team! We wish her all the best as she competes in the NSWPSSA state championships from 25 - 27 September 2018 at Mudgee. What a wonderful achievement!

Fathers Day Stall – Friday 31 August

Next Friday 31 August, we will be holding the ever popular Fathers Day stall, so send your child along to school with some money so they can choose a gift for their Dad, Grandad, Uncle or Carer. Gifts will range in price from $1-$6. We also need volunteers to help sell the gifts to the children, so if you are free that morning between 9am and 11am, please come along to the hall. We are on the lookout for new people to join the Social & Fundraising Committee, so if you have some great ideas or keen to just come along and

see what its all about, contact us to find out location and time of our next meeting. If you have any questions about any of our events, or want to join us on the organising committee, we’d love to have some more members, please get in touch, you can find us in the playground at drop off and pick up or send us an email. Social & Fundraising Committee.

UNIFORM SHOP

Wow! Can't believe we are already more than half way through the year! Only a few more weeks and we will be going through the cupboards again to see if those summer uniforms still fit. Term 4 is when the children start wearing the summer uniform again. This will continue into Term 1 of 2019. There is generally a two week transition, depending on the weather. We have a lot of second hand stock available, as well as new stock of course. If you think your child has had a growth spurt recently, we recommend you bring them into the shop for a fitting first. This may save you time where you’re not having to come back to return or exchange items. FlexiSchools orders continue to be successful as orders can be placed at your convenience and delivered to your child's classroom or coscare. Do you have a child starting kindergarten next year? Something else to think about... Bring them in for a fitting. They will be even more excited about starting school when they look the part. Although the shop has been quiet the past few weeks, we are already preparing for a busy time ahead. Our uniform shop has wonderful parent helpers, but we are always in need of more. Come see us if you think you can help. A new volunteer roster is drawn up at the end of each term. Call Irene for more details or any enquiries. 0403083925
