I am pleased to say we have had a relatively smooth start to the year with students moving into their 2018 classes on Wednesday. As a result of collaborative planning days at the end of 2017, all teachers were ready to start their teaching programs for the year with little “down” time for the students. Staffing wise, we have two new members of staff, Miss Wester and Mrs Payet, who are both teaching on Stage 2. Mr Jewson has returned to Croydon after teaching in London last year. Unfortunately for our school, Ms Lupton, who was relieving as Deputy Principal, was offered a relieving principal’s position at Thirroul Public School which she accepted. Ms Senthil has stepped into the relieving Deputy Principal role for Term 1 and Miss Simpson will be relieving on KL during Term 1. Mr Seeley has stepped into the relieving Assistant Principal position in Kindergarten. Miss Sutton has taken on the relieving Assistant Principal position in Stage 3 as Mrs Pearson has continued her leave. This year we have eight of our 28 classes in open plan, flexible learning spaces with two teachers team teaching. Last year we successfully trialled this model in Year 3. Our parent information night this Wednesday 7 February will be an opportunity for parents to learn about how this model works in practice. The Parent Information Night has been moved forward so that parents can learn about the routines and class/expectations early in the term. The night is an information session and whilst questions are expected, it is not an opportunity to “grill” the teachers or discuss individual students. If parents wish to have a discussion with the teacher about their child please organise a mutually convenient time to have a meeting. At the end of 2017 it was flagged with parents that the delivery of the school band program would be put in the hands of Directions in Music. At this stage band tutorials and practices will begin in Week 3. As this is a new format, it will probably take this term to have the program running smoothly. I ask parents to be patient during this transition period and I am confident that we will have a quality program in place by the end of the term. Ms Lucantonio

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE I would like to welcome all our families to the 2018 school year and in particular those families who are new to Croydon Public School.

SPEECH PATHOLOGY PROGRAM Croydon Public School will continue to employ a Speech Pathologist throughout 2018.

Elizabeth Ware is a qualified Speech Pathologist who works for Educational Speech Pathology & Therapy Services. Elizabeth will be working at our school each Monday and Tuesday throughout this year. Parents & caregivers, it is important to note that you cannot refer your child directly to the Speech Pathologist. If your child already attends speech therapy outside of school, please do not stop attending. The Educational Speech Pathology program cannot offer the same individualised therapy your child will receive through either Community Health or Private speech therapy. Elizabeth’s main role will be to support the speaking and listening skills of the children in the class room setting. She will also be conducting screenings at the school. You will receive written information if your child is required to be withdrawn from class for group lessons.

READING VOLUNTEERS- MULTILIT Reading Volunteers Needed- MULTILIT The school is looking at having another successful year at running the valuable MULTILIT reading program. MULTILIT is an individual reading tutor program that gives some targeted students in Years 3-6, extra one to one assistance in reading. The success and running of this program highly depends on the number of volunteers that are willing to be trained and participate. To be involved, volunteer tutors need to be willing to be involved at least 1 hour in the morning once a week (9-10am). Tutors can be parents, grandparents, friends, community members, university students etc. Tutors will be trained to administer the program and will work one on one with students alongside a teacher. The school would like to thank the parents who participated as tutors in the program last year. The school and students saw many positive results from the program. The volunteers also got satisfaction and enjoyment from building relationships with

different students and seeing their improvement and growth. Depending on how many volunteers there are, training may run on either Tuesday 14 February or Wednesday 15 February from 9-10am or 2-3pm. If you cannot make these times but are interested please let me know and I will organise another day and time. If you are able to participate or have any enquiries please email me at [email protected] or call me at the school on Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Thank you for your support in this worthwhile program. Valerie Antoniadis Learning and Support Teacher (K-6)

Since 1992, schools across Australia have got stuck in and made a real difference to their environment and local communities through participating in Schools Clean Up Day. Last year alone, over 2000 schools participated in our Clean Up Australia Day events, making an immense contribution to the 14,139 tonnes of rubbish removed in 2017. Schools Clean Up Day is a fun and engaging way to teach young Australians about the responsible disposal of rubbish, resource recovery and the repercussions of rubbish dumped irresponsibly in the local environment. Students are asked to bring a plastic bag and gloves on the day. Clean up will start at 9:30am. Volunteers are very welcome to come and help out! Please let your classroom teacher know if you can make it on the day. Because when the rubbish is gone, nature can carry on. Miss Hearn

There are 2 ability groups: beginner and intermediate. Learning and playing chess helps children develop their logical thinking and problem solving skills, improves their concentration and focus, while also being a great source of enjoyment. Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, or by displaying skills and positive

P&C NEWS Happy New School Year! I hope you all had a good holiday and survived the first week back at school. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the new students and their families to our Croydon Public School community and hope you grow to love it as much as I do! I look forward to another year of supporting the amazing staff and students at CPS. At CPS there are many ways to become involved, including volunteering at the Uniform Shop and the Canteen as well as various social and fundraising events and of course attending our regular P&C meetings. I would like to encourage the wider CPS community to join in as often as you can, even if it’s just once a year – all your help is needed and appreciated. To join the Uniform Shop team on a Tuesday or Thursday morning please contact Irene Browne on 0403 083 925 or email [email protected]. If you are interested in doing a shift in the canteen please contact Lexi Hunter on [email protected] or Diana Dean on 0421 156 713. P&C Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month during term time. They are a great way to find out what’s going on at the school first hand from the school executive. The meetings are also where decisions are made on what and how

UNIFORM SHOP

Hello everyone and welcome to 2018. The Uniform Shop has started the year off at a furious pace. Both Tuesday and Thursday morning of the first week back, our dedicated parent volunteers were run off their feet serving customers, packing online orders and delivering orders to classrooms. With many new families joining us here at Croydon, either starting kindergarten or transferring from other schools, sales ranged from 'everything', to a new senior uniform, and even replacing that missing hat. Our parent volunteers took it in their stride, fitting children in the correct size uniforms and offering helpful advise to parents, serving everyone with a smile and a 'welcome to Croydon' until the last customer in the queue was served. Trading Hours for weeks 1 & 2 (only) have been extended. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8.45am till 10am. Normal hours will resume at the start of week 3 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8.45-9.15am. Flexischools online ordering is available for your convenience.

In the shop we accept cash, cheque, or credit card, (NOT EFTPOS). Good quality, second hand uniforms are also available, in the Uniform Shop (NOT online). There is a NO REFUND and NO EXCHANGE POLICY for all second hand goods. Donations of uniform items you no longer need are always welcome. Please ensure they are clean and in good condition. Donations can be left in the laundry basket located outside the uniform shop at any time. Please do not leave them at the front office. Refund/Exchange policy, for NEW items only, is within 60 days. Items MUST be in their original packaging, and you MUST have your receipt! The school swimming carnival is coming up soon. Swimming caps are available in house colours, here in the shop and online. Volunteers Needed. The Uniform Shop is run entirely by parent volunteers and raises on average $20,000 per year. Monies raised goes directly back into our school to benefit our students. We are always in need of more volunteers throughout the year, no sales experience required. On the job training will be provided. So if you feel you would enjoy joining our team and have an hour or so spare on a Tuesday or Thursday morning, weekly or fortnightly, please come see us. Any queries you may have, please call/sms Irene - Uniform Shop Co-ordinator, on 0403 083 925. OR email us at [email protected] OR come into the shop and speak to one of our dedicated parent volunteers. You will find the Uniform Shop price list and Flexischools online ordering information at the end of this newsletter. Here's to a great year!
