Issue 10 From the Principal’s Pen 25 th August 2014 Dear Parents/Carers ASSEMBLY Mrs Callow/Mrs Maguire‟s and Mrs Palmer/Mrs Warren‟s Year 1 classes delighted us with a poem and song about crocodiles. With all the facts about this frightening beast, these children will certainly never want to go close to a crocodile! They told us not to stroke him, never be taken in by his welcoming grin and never trust him. A unison poem told with such sincerity and enthusiasm as only Year ones can do, followed by a happy song re-iterating their warnings reminded us all that crocodiles are not at all friendly. Congratulations to the Year 1 students for their item and for the colourful and beautifully decorated backdrop of their drawings and puppets. What a spectacular display! Castletown„s SUPREME Win Congratulations to all our Castletown students who competed in the Esperance Music Festival on Thursday and Friday. The percussion groups performed admirably on Thursday with Room 00 and Room 4 both winning their sections. Our choirs completed against other schools in the district and won both Senior and Junior Choir sections and the Small Group Choral Section with the outstanding marks of 93, 92 and 92 respectively. The students presented themselves beautifully in full uniform (thank you to our wonderful supportive parents for this) and looked magnificent on stage. The singing was an absolute treat to hear. The Judge, Mr Barry Palmer, was certainly impressed and lavished praise on our students for their hard work and efforts and high standard of singing and particularly thanked Mrs Stevens for her outstanding work in music in our school. Thank you Mrs Stevens; we could not have reached the heights we did in singing without you. You have a magic, talented touch with music and are so inspirational to our children. Lucky Castletown! Thank you also to Mrs Irene Melbourne our accompanist, who has spent many hours with our choirs to support our school. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Thank you to Mrs Gillian Florisson for organising this important project. It is a powerful and tangible gesture to send shoeboxes with gifts to underprivileged children in third world countries from our students. Castletown has supported this project over several years. Classes will have the opportunity to become involved in this project which involves donating small items. Notes will be sent home to parents elaborating on the above. Collections will be over several weeks. Students will also learn about their near neighbours and linking the project with history and geography. STAFFING Mrs Mather will be on Long Service Leave for a period of six weeks from Monday 25 th August. We wish her a well-deserved, enjoyable break. Mr Weckert has been appointed to the Associate Principal position in her absence. PARENT OPEN NIGHT This is coming up in week 8 on Thursday 11 th September. THE VIRTUES PROJECT - PURPOSEFULNESS WHAT IS PURPOSEFULNESS? Being purposeful is having a clear focus, instead of being confused or unsure of what you are doing or why you are doing it. You are acting purposefully when you have a goal you are working toward. You concentrate your mind and your efforts so that something good will happen as a result. Some people just let things happen. A purposeful person makes things happen. WHY PRACTISE PURPOSEFULNESS? Without a sense of purpose, people scatter their energies and their attention. Without knowing why they are doing something – the purpose – they easily give up. When you chose to be purposeful, you can achieve great results. Motivation comes easily because you know why you are doing something. You have a positive attitude and don’t let obstacles stop you from doing what is important. HOW DO YOU PRACTISE PURPOSEFULNESS? Being purposeful begins with setting a vision or a goal for what you want to accomplish. Knowing why it is important is your purpose. With your goal in mind, do things one at a time, with as much care and concentration as you can. Don’t let yourself get scattered in many directions, trying to do everything at once. Stay focussed on your purpose. SIGNS OF SUCCESS You are practising Purposefulness when you…

Have a clear vision * Do things one at a time Know why you are doing it * Finish what you start Focus on a goal * Persevere until you get a result Get back on purpose if you get distracted

Year 6 Camp 2014

On Sunday the 3rd August the Year 6 students and teachers met in front of the school ready for an exciting camp ahead. Once the bus was packed and we had met Barry the bus driver we started our 10hr drive to Nanga Bush Camp, Dwellingup. The bus drive went smoothly for most of us where we filled our time with talking, sleeping and playing games. We eventually got to Dwellingup and saw where we were staying. Our cabin was called Currawong. Inside there was a big open area that included a basketball hoop and firemen’s poles, with our dorms upstairs. Once we had found our dorms and got settled in it was dark. We then went on a night walk around the camp. During the night walk rumors were spread about Nanga Bill the spirit who haunts Nanga Bush camp. To try to scare us even more Miss Mather jumped out of the bushes and scared some of the students. The next day we met Dekkers and Brad from Dekked Out Adventures who ran our activities. Our activities included: Flying Fox, Bike Riding, Mountain Walking, Rafting, Rock climbing and Abseiling. We also did activities that encouraged our teamwork and mental skills. But we did also have fun at night with a movie night, skit night and a spotlight type game on the last night. During the whole camp we were looking for keys to open a vault containing endangered animals. These keys were found during activities and we eventually found the vault. When we opened the vault there were 5 bags of lolly snakes that were very endangered once we had eaten them. On the way back to Esperance nearly everyone got sick but we all came back alive. During our time at camp we learnt a lot about each other and about ourselves. And a lot about the teachers. The good and the bad. We learnt how to overcome our fears and work as a team. But none of this would happen without the teachers, Barry and Dekkers. Our Year 6 has brought memories that the whole class of 2014 Year 6 will share. By Olivia Kipling, Room 15

A meeting with parents from K-2 was held on Wednesday afternoon to explain the National Quality Standard and what this will mean for our children. Early childhood programs from K- Year 2 will be required to meet the National Quality Standard. Schools are required in 2015 to self-assess on the standards and to plan to make improvements. One of the key components of the seven areas of the national Quality Standard is “Collaborative partnerships with families and communities” which was discussed at the meeting. We want parents to be involved with their children‟s education and with our school. Three questions were posed at the meeting for discussion and feedback. They are: 1. What can Castletown Primary School do to better help all families feel comfortable and welcome to our school? 2. How can we facilitate effective communication with families? 3. What would you like Castletown to look like, feel like and sound like?

Parent feed-back on these questions is invited and welcomed. Put your thoughts and suggestions in an envelope and send to the office. Thank you in advance for your input.

If you would like to help in the canteen, please fill in the form below and return it to the canteen as soon as possible. We are a little short on helpers, so please think about putting your name on the roster. If you can help it would be great. You have fun, your kids love seeing their family in the canteen and you get a free lunch too! Volunteers are required Monday to Friday between 9.30am and approx 12.45pm. You can volunteer for one, two

or however many times you would like each term. Some people choose to come in on a weekly basis. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call me at the canteen, on 90713148.

Thank you, Janice Spencer, Canteen Manager

Webcams Needed The School requires a number of webcams for students to use to

supplement new software recently purchased. If you have a spare

webcam cluttering up your desk or gathering dust in a cupboard that you don’t need we would be very grateful

for it to be donated to the School. Thank you.
