NEWSletter
Dear Parents/Guardians
You would think that things may get a little easier at Bishop Fox’s
in the Summer Term as we prepare for the long summer break,
but far from it!
It’s been a tough exam season for all students, spanning from
mid-April until the end of June. Year 11 in particular have had a
tortuous time, sitting more GCSE and BTEC exams than ever
before. Many have been tremendous with their hard work,
commitment and resilience. Attendance to revision classes has
been impressive and the effort given in exam preparation lessons
with their subject teachers has given them the best chance of
achieving the most successful outcomes in August. We all felt
very proud of the way they conducted themselves on leaver’s
day and the Prom, a true celebration of 5 great years at Bishop
Fox’s.
A big thank you to all the school staff for driving much of this
exam work. With special thanks to our Exams Officer Mrs Tucker,
the army of exam invigilators and support staff who have helped
read and scribe for students. It’s been a big ask for many and for
that I am grateful. Also thanks needs to go to the PE faculty and
our students of all year groups who have been forced out of the
Sports hall for so long, even when Taunton’s weather felt far from
‘summery’.
Leaving us in July are a number of long standing and loyal staff.
From the teaching staff Mrs Hampson, Mr Grace, Miss Reed and
Mrs Rivett will be leaving us, and from the support staff
Miss Tabb and Mrs Turner. Each of them will be missed by
colleagues, students and the whole school community but we all
wish them the very best in the future.
In September we welcome Mrs Wood, Miss Moore and
Mrs Wright to the school. We also welcome Miss Whittaker and
Mrs Mortlock back from maternity leave. New internal
appointments include Mrs Thorne who will be Head of Year 11,
Mr Contreras Head of Years 7 and 8, and Miss Clarke is our new
SENCO / Head of Learning Support. Mr Chandler is also
appointed as the Curriculum Team Leader for ICT.
Our Business Manager Mrs Robertson has successfully
managed our budget going forward. 2017/18 is going to be a
lean year for many schools and budgets are being squeezed in
education. But to be one of the few local schools to avoid
redundancies is very impressive indeed and shows some very
prudent financial management.
At the time of writing, the school roll has risen to 942. The new
Year 7 intake is currently at 196 with some appeals still to be
heard. The Year 6 induction days were a great success and we
look forward to welcoming the new cohort of students in the new
academic year. We are encouraged that all school years are
presently at full capacity and there continues to be a significant
waiting list for places.
Year 10 have had a busy few weeks and there are 93 newly
trained prefects ready to take on their roles in September. The
calibre of the cohort has been very impressive this year. Mr
Hennessy and I interviewed and appointed the new team of Head
Prefects. Each will, no doubt, be a fantastic ambassador for the
school.
Activity Days are a bi-annual event and will be running for the
last 3 days of the year. There are trips to Disneyland Paris, La
Fosca in Spain, London musicals, Dr Who in Cardiff, Brecon
Beacons adventure camp, Castell Coch in Wales, cultural trip to
Manchester, horse riding, fishing, craft activities and many more
activities a little closer to home.
Extra curricular activities have been impressive this term. The
long list includes Sports Day, the Prom, a trip to Thorpe Park, a
visit to Exeter University with the Brilliant Club and through STEM
activities; sports leaders and primary sports festivals, Maths
Challenge, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, extended study,
buddy training, science club went to the Met Office on summer
camp, anti-bullying ambassadors, the drama productions of DNA
and Matilda, the spectacular Summer Concert, B&E Enterprise
competitions and so much more. Whatever talent or interest that
each student has, I guarantee that there is something for
everyone.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank parents and guardians
for your continued support of the school, and I hope that you all
enjoy a restful sunny summer holiday.
Kerry Tonkin, Headteacher

As the year is coming to a close, in the FLC we would like to
share and celebrate with the whole school, the success of
one of our Year 11 students who is leaving. James has a
complex special educational needs profile and he has an
Education Health Care Plan. He has made enormous
progress over his five years and he has been on an
inspirational journey in becoming an independent learner and
an assured young man, with greater confidence, who is ready
for college.
He is a talented young sportsman who has represented the
school throughout at Parallel games, who has run a
lunchtime sports club for the FLC as a Sports Leader and
who plays football and cricket regularly. He has played for
the disabled English cricket team on many occasions.
He has benefitted from robust support from school along
with having extremely supportive parents. However, it is
James himself who must be commended for the progress he
has made and we are immensely proud of him.
Mrs S Hampson, Head of Learning Support
Thanks to the kind donations from local businesses; Monkton Elm Garden Centre,
RGB Building Supplies and Taunton Deane Borough Council, students in Year 8 have
been designing and creating a sensory garden. Although in its early stages, the area
is beginning to take shape.

CAREERS
25 Year 10 students completed their D of E bronze expedition in June. The students followed a planned route in groups, starting in Cannington
and walking onto the Quantocks, where they camped at Broomfield. Students had to take all of their equipment, food and clothes for the
weekend in their rucksacks and had to cook for themselves using Trangia stoves. After camping overnight, students then made their way to
the final destination - Bishop Fox’s School. The students had to work independently throughout the weekend with staff meeting them at
checkpoints to ensure they were safe. Mr Summerill, who supported the weekend, said “ I am extremely proud of our students. In partnership
with Outposts, we have supported 12 Year 11 students to achieve the silver award and 25 achieved bronze - our most successful year yet!”
DUKE OF EDINBURGH
A busy term in the careers department. Year 10 have justcompleted a hugely successful Work Experience week. Studentsspent five days at a variety of businesses in the county gainingmany new skills and learning about the world of work.
Placements included EDF, County Hall, cafés, shops, garages, sports facilities, vets, IT companies, the hospital and Vivary Parkto name but a few.
Every student was visited by a member of staff from Bishop Fox’sand feedback from both employers and students was excellent.Year 10 were a credit to themselves and to the school.
Year 9 students should start to think and plan over the summerwhere you would like to go - it’s your turn next!!
Work Experience organisation is a massive team effort so thankyou to the students, parents, staff and employers who contributedto such a successful week.
In preparation for college applications (January 2018), Year 10have started to attend one to one careers consultations. Studentsare being encouraged to start looking carefully at courses andcolleges. In addition, 82 Year 10 students recently attended aRichard Huish College experience day where they joined studentsin A level lessons. The students engaged really well and found theday extremely useful and exciting.
65 students also attended Bridgwater and Taunton College(Bridgwater site) where they had the opportunity to try out A leveland BTEC lessons and soak up the college atmosphere. Anotherreally successful day.
On a smaller scale, two Year 10 groups visited the CateringDepartment at Bridgwater & Taunton College (Taunton site). Theywere very impressed by the kitchen/restaurant facilities and thecourses that are on offer. Another small group of Year 9 and Year10 students visited the Art and Textiles Department at Bridgwater& Taunton College (Taunton site), where they had the opportunityto learn about courses and to view the fantastic work the collegestudents had produced for their end of year shows.
Year 10 all attended a presentation by Bridgwater & TauntonCollege during PSHE when they were given an overview of thecollege and the application process. During the autumn term thecolleges will be holding many open evenings and taster days. It isimportant that students and parents attend these to enableinformed choices to be made for Year 13.
Please note college applications will be completed in school on theCurriculum Day in January 2018.

Year 9 ‘More Able’ students attended the launch of this year’s
Brilliant Club Scholars Programme at the University of Exeter. They
were given lots of information about going to university and a tour
of the impressive Streatham campus. They also met their tutor for
the project who is Dr Rebecca Dewhirst- an associate research
fellow who already has a PhD in plant biochemistry. She will
support the students over a number of tutorials to produce their
own essay on the effects of wildfires on plant evolution. Good luck
to the students over the next few weeks of this project.
EXTENDED STUDYThis term celebrated the completion of our Extended Study
programme. The ‘More Able’ students in Years 7, 8 and 9 were
given the task of creating a project of their own design to work on
outside of lessons throughout the year with only minimal help from
a mentor. The standard of what was produced was extremely high
and all students who reached the end of the programme were a
credit to the school.
Mr Gosden said “It was hard to choose winners amongst the
numerous exceptional projects but credit goes to Oliver Thomas -
(who was awarded bronze), Esme Knight and Isabel Bailey
(awarded joint silver) and Hannah Price (who was awarded gold).
A massive well done to all involved”.

Students at Bishop Fox’s have had the opportunity to take part in
a range of Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM)
focused activities this year. Here are just a few highlights from
across the year.
· Year 10 Triple Scientists were amazed to gain first-hand
experience of being in a nuclear power station during a visit to
Hinkley Point.
· Year 10 and Year 11 students wowed the judges at the Fleet Air
Arm Museum as part of technology focused competitions and
Curriculum Day visits this year; the work of Poppy Elsmore and
Dulcie Lanaghan being most impressive.
· In Year 9 Caedmon Emery, Will Grabham, Diya Paul, Lanella Wall
and Gianpaolo Morelli-Thompson gave up some of their Easter
holidays to attend a Low Carbon Residential at Cannington Court
run by EDF.
· Twenty students from Year 9 were selected to take part in a
renewable energy themed workshop which saw them making
electromagnets and learning about different sources of energy.
· Thirty students from Year 8 battled it out at a STEM day to design
and make a propelled carrier that would transport an egg safely,
as far as possible when launched at high speed. Resources were
limited, creativity was high and everyone demonstrated their true
competitive streak.
· Forty students recently attended the South West Big Bang Fair
at Exeter University, Jess Strong, a Year 8 student wrote the
following report:
The sTem Day at exeter
“On Wednesday 21st June, a big assortment of different year
groups went to the Big Bang Show at Exeter University. First we
went to the Space Academy aeronautics show, where we made
CD hovercrafts, straw rockets and futuristic paper shuttles. Next,
we made our way to a room with project stalls; there were eco-
friendly plastic collecting buoys, safety beanies, methods of food
preservation and much more. After we had our break, we
journeyed up to the Sports Hall (which was undoubtedly
ENORMOUS) and had a good look around at all the stalls that
were set up there. There was a planetarium, educations VR
headsets, university advertising stalls and robotics. It was a truly
amazing trip and extremely beneficial to all involved. Many thanks
to Mrs Bedford-Hill, Mr Bryan, Mr Gosden and Miss Cooper.”
(Jess Strong, Year 8)
Despite all of this STEM is not yet done for the year. Mr Bryan and
Miss Matthews are taking a small selection of Year 7 students to
the MET Office to stay overnight in July. We look forward to
hearing what they discover on their return.
Many thanks to all of the staff who have been involved in the
planning, co-ordinating and running of these activities and a huge
well done to the students that have been involved, each and every
one has been an excellent representative for our school.
A STEM update...
We were very proud of all those individuals who had the
confidence and took the time to apply for the position of Prefect
at the school in the 2017-18 academic year. Collectively all the
applicants were very strong candidates and it was a very difficult
decision to whittle the numbers down to the final successful teams
Congratulations to all those who have been selected, it is a
fantastic achievement. As ambassadors of the school, we take
great pride in the prefects being positive role models for all
students to look up to. There are various important roles that the
prefects fulfil including helping with Reading Rebels in KS3, Wake
and Shake, supporting homework club in C1, organising the
careers library, co-ordinating successful practice interviews with
Mrs Dalling, doing lunchtime duties, entertaining the masses in the
hall, supporting school events, showing people around the school,
being guides at Open Evening, meeting and greeting at Parents’
Evenings and a whole lot more!
It is going to be a busy year for all but we are confident that there
is no better group of students to work with.
The prefect training day on 15th June was a great success,
learning how to deal with situations that may arise, with advice
also shared on how prefects can be more assertive. Mr Hennessy,
Mrs Causley and Mrs Keedwell provided activities that were fun
and helped them work together in teams. These are important
skills in life and we hope that, as a result of the training day, they
feel confident in being able to be effective in their new roles that
really start in September.
Massive congratulations to the new Head Prefect team. It has
been particularly difficult this year to select the Head Prefects due
to the exceptional calibre of the Year 10 prefects.
The selection of Head Prefects is a very rigorous process with the
eight candidates completing a gruelling interview with Ms Tonkin
and Mr Hennessy. It is through these interviews where the various
roles are decided.
We wish the team the very best for 2017-18; leading a team of
your peers can have its difficulties but we are confident that you
all have the attributes to do your job exceptionally well.

Drama PrODUCTIONS
The drama department have had a busy
Summer term. GCSE drama students have
been to London to see DNA to inspire their
own production which they performed to a
small audience.
There has also been a whole school
production of Matilda which saw some of
our Year 7 students take on lead roles.
It has been another very busy year for the
Student Council at Bishop Fox’s. The
elected representatives from each tutor
group have met each half term to discuss a
range of pressing issues.
Representing the student body, they started
the year with a SWOT analysis (Strengths,
Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats)
which was taken to the Senior Leadership
Team and the site team to discuss and help
inform planning. The Student Council has
been regularly kept informed and their views
sought across a wide variety of the school’s
strategic development priorities. In addition,
the School Council had a ballot and chose
Cancer Research UK as the National Charity
for 2016-17; the local charities are Think
Amy and St. Margaret’s Hospice Care.

wilD swimminG - saFeTY PRecaUTions
During the summer holidays, especially on hot days, it might be
tempting to go for a cooling dip in the river or pond – but please
be aware that this is potentially dangerous, even for strong
swimmers and for both adults and children.
Both The Wildlife Trust and Canal and River Trust have offer
comprehensive safety advice you can follow on their websites.
The Canal and River Trust offer this advice:
‘Even the strongest swimmers may face difficulties in the water.
The water will be cold, even in the summer; which will take your
breath away and leave you gasping for air. The shock of the cold
water will also mean that your blood will rush away from your
muscles to protect your vital organs, leaving your muscle and
limbs without energy to keep you afloat. There may be unseen
objects which could cause you injury. Open water is often murky
so you won’t be able to tell the depth. It could be much deeper
than you expect or much shallower than you expect, making it
very dangerous if you jump in… There are no life guards on the
waterways and many stretches of the coast to rescue you if you
get into difficulties. There are no ladders to get out. If you fall
in the water, it is likely you will be wearing clothes which will
become heavy when wet making it much harder to stay afloat or
lift yourself out of the water.’
We hope that you find other ways to enjoy your summer
holidays and cool down with swimming in the swimming pool
or in Lifeguard patrolled designated safe swimming areas in the
sea.
supervision prior to start of school: We
are aware that some students arrive at
school before 7.30am in the morning.
Whilst we appreciate the necessity for some
students to be dropped off early, we cannot
accept responsibility for their supervision
until 8.30am in the morning. Whilst many
staff are here much earlier than this, we are,
as you will appreciate, engaged in other
work related activities at these times.
