Remembrance DayStudents and staff gathered today to reflect and pay respect to the fallen. As a college, we came together in classrooms and the Design faculty to remember the sacrifices made by those in service around the world, with touching tributes in the form of poetry, literature, ceramics and installations. The two minute silence united us with a shared purpose.

A small exhibition including stories of relatives, images of poppies created by Year 10 Citizenship students and even a ceramic poppy from the Tower of London will be up for the next few weeks.

Many staff wore porcelain poppies that were individually handmade within Design, and raised over £300 for The Royal British Legion.

Japanese VisitorsTalking to a stranger is hard enough, talking to a group at once who all speak a different language is even harder! Last Thursday Beauchamp College was lucky enough to host a handful of Japanese Students. Not only did they bring; swords, biscuits and a very interesting dance routine - they brought along a very positive and cheery attitude which made for a delightful day.

Our day with the students began with formal introductions and it became apparent that their English was fantastic, but our Japanese... not so much. This worry was quickly overcome by the help of a phenomenal translator who accompanied them. After giving them a tour of Beauchamp College which broke the ice, presentations were delivered in order to help us understand one another even more. Perhaps the most entertaining part of their whole presentation was the Kendo routine performed by two of the girls. Kendo being a sort-of Japanese fencing, was highly entertaining to watch and a lovely aspect of Japanese culture that the students were able to learn more about.

Overall, meeting the students showed the sheer difference in cultural norms. For example, their respect for elders, peers and surroundings really came across.

HamletOn Thursday 19th November a group of Year 11 students performed a thirty minute version of Hamlet at Curve Theatre Leicester, as part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival, alongside three other schools. Set within the confines of a giant chess board, each character attempted to assert their power in an ever changing, tragic game. There were some stunning individual performances which expertly exposed the conflicting and complex emotions of the characters. The cast rehearsed relentlessly and displayed a great amount of resilience; a special mention has to be given Jude Mitchell who broke his leg one week before the show and still made it on stage! It was an absolute pleasure to work with such a talented and committed cast, who expressed the complicated and mature themes of the play with real skill and intellect. Thank you to all of the staff and parents who supported us. If you missed out, the show will be put on as part of the Beauchamp Fringe programme in March.

Pass It On CampaignSeptember is blood cancer awareness month, to mark it the Rik Basra Leukemia Campaign ran a registration drive on each day of the month for people to sign up to the Anthony Nolan register. With each organization including, the Curve, Leicestershire Police, Radio Leicester and many more passing on a flag with each donor signing it. On September 25th it was Beauchamp College’s time to take part. The day started with a small group of students and staff taking a trip to the University of Leicester to pick up the flag.

Throughout the day students and members of staff signed up with a fantastic 217 in total by the end of the day. Whilst this was going on, our resident DJ played the latest tunes to the Sixth Form students.

The day ended with all of Year 10 taking part in a Mexican wave, which was headed up by Filbert Fox and ended with the flag being passed onto Leicester City Football Club. This was a great way of making younger students aware of the cause and when they are older will be able to make the decision to sign up to the register.

On September 30th the campaign flag will eventually finish it’s tour of Leicester and will eventually be hung up at the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, where it will give hope and encouragement to those who battle with the disease.

The Rik Basra Charity was very appreciative of our efforts, which you can read below:

Rik and I can never ever express how grateful we are to you all for not just supporting our work but supporting the Pass It On campaign. It has meant so much to us and made a huge difference. Please believe me when I say Beauchamp College have made such a significant contribution to increasing understanding about being a donor and the work of Anthony Nolan. Your efforts will be rewarded in the years to come by the saving of more lives. You have our immense gratitude

Your event has raised awareness immensely… each and every signature added to the flag at your event and any of the others has the potential to save a life. A final thought… each registration remaining active until the person reaches sixty years of age, your hard work will make the difference to many, not just now but for many years to come.

Black HistoryMonth

The October Live Lounge celebrating Black History was again a successful event, which showcased a range of talent. Massive thanks to all students who performed, Miss Milson and Mrs Keaney for supporting the event!

Senior Citizens PartyOn Tuesday 8 December we held our annual Senior Citizens Christmas party. The tables were adorned with mince pies, sausage rolls, sandwiches and other goodies to treat our guests.

There was entertainment showcasing Beauchamp talent through music, acting and dance. The little children who attend the Beauchamp Childcare Centre also made an appearance and gave our guests some beautiful hand print Rudolf cards that they had taken time creating.

Waitrose, Sainsburys, Co-Op, Boots, Davies Materials & Tools Ltd and Aigburth Care Home all generously gave donations towards the raffle. We would like to thank these companies for their kindness.

The event was concluded with our guests singing some of their favourite carols led by our Head of Music, Mr Anderson playing the piano.

Data Protection If you would not like your child to be photographed for the college newsletter, college website or college facebook page then please email Joanne Grant: [email protected].

Christmas ConcertLast night Beauchamp College held its annual Christmas Concert. The evening kicked off with the A-level choir performing ‘Gaudete! Piae Cantione’s, which is a sacred Latin Christmas carol followed later in the evening by a performance of ‘Rise up, Shepherd and Follow’ and ‘While Shepherds Watched’.

The evening also showcased a fantastic array of solo talents including Emma Greaves who sang and played ‘All I Want For Christmas is You’. John Shields on the keys playing ‘Skyfall’, Bhavdeep Soor playing Rag Yaman on the sitar, ‘Diamonds’ which was sung and played by Nicole Williams and a comical Christmas medley arranged and performed by Ethan Mugglestone.

The audience was also treated to two songs by the flute ensemble ‘Sleigh Ride’ by Delius and ‘Dance of the little swans’ by Tchaikovsky. As well as the Flute trio (Teachers Anthony Anderson on the piano and Jenny Brooks playing the flute and also Maisie Gamble on the flute) who treated the audience to ‘Childhood of Christ’ by Berlioz.

There were three bands, firstly the Rock School band who did a Christmas jam, secondly the Jazz Funk band who performed ‘Santa’s Road Song’, ‘O Christmas Tree’ and ‘Chitlins con Carne Christmas’ and thirdly the orchestra band who treated the audience to ‘Christmas Overture for Band’ by Robert W. Smith, ‘Carol for Christmas’ by Leontovich and ‘Santa Claus is coming to town’ by Gillespie and Coots.

There were ensembles from both Year 10 and Year 11 music class students including ‘Jingle Bells’, ‘The Christmas Song’ and ‘Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree’ which the audience took great delight in singing along to.

There were also two readings by Mr Rowe and Mr Gilford as well as a chance for the audience to sing some of their favourite carols.

Well done to all who took part in a successful and enjoyable evening.

Ticket sales from the event went towards Children In Need. The final total raised, which also involved other activities including a hat wearing day, was £1179.79.

Bush Tucker TrialToday we had our charity Bush Tucker Trial. Students were given the opportunity to vote for a teacher to take part in the challenge by making a donation. The teachers who were voted in were Mr Oswin, Mrs Cowley, Mr Foreman, Miss Hickes, Miss Cunningham, Mr Theobald and Mr Ardley. The food on the menu was queen leaf cutter ants, mixed critters, bamboo worms and chocolate coated locusts. From the teachers expressions and squirming the chocolate coated locusts were definitely the most disgusting. Our Principal Miss Kelly and Vice Principals, Mrs Piper-Gale and Miss Petrie, were also encouraged to sample them and looked just as impressed.

The event raised £820 which will go towards enabling urgent medical care of vulnerable refugees from around the world.

Charity Week 2015 (ISoc)UNITY. If there is one word that could sum up our Charity Week 2015 experience it would be that. The unification of a diverse multitude of students at Beauchamp College all coming together collectively to support one cause. One cause that resonated with many of us, pulled at our heart strings and urged for us to do something. Individually, we couldn’t have achieved, but united we managed to raise an astonishing £2465.66. We were so lucky to have such enthusiastic volunteers who were willing to go above and beyond, tirelessly giving up their time to raise money. What was most inspiring was the amount of people who wanted to help out that had never heard of or attended the Islamic Society (ISoc) before. The week connected students from all backgrounds, working towards an important common goal – raising money for global orphans and needy children. We managed to sell all our Krispy Kreme doughnuts, pizzas, sweets, whilst finishing off the week by selling frozen yoghurt from FroYum. Oh, and we enjoyed seeing people getting dressed up in sumo suits too!

Recently, many of our Charity Week volunteers attended the annual Charity Week Round Off dinner for the Midlands. Although it was a great night of socialising, we got to really appreciate the efforts that we had put in over Charity Week and where all the money was going to. We came out with some incredible awards. Beauchamp ISoc won an award for gaining the highest total raised from all colleges and schools in the Midlands. But the greatest surprise came when we were awarded with the ‘Midlands Star Award.’ This was an award that was going to be given to the BEST Charity Week team in the Midlands, competing against major universities such as Loughborough, Leicester and Keele. This would not have been possible without the support of Beauchamp College. We want to thank Beauchamp College and all the staff, for helping us organise our events and for supporting us throughout the week, even though times may have been stressful! We also want to thank everyone who donated to such a great cause. The money raised will help these children and show them that the world does care.

School to School CollaborationAs part of the school to school collaboration programme I have been working with a number of local primary schools to teach year 5 students how to cook and prepare food. This term I have been teaching at Langmoor and Glenmere and the students from Brocks Hill have been to cook at Beauchamp. We will be working with Houghton, Launde, St Lukes and Woodland Grange in 2016.

We have been focussing on making savoury healthy dishes and using equipment safety. Students have really enjoyed the sessions and have made dishes including vegetable soup, Potato scones, Vegetable Stir fry, Bread sticks, Lemon couscous salad and Sweetcorn fritters.

Beauchapp Reaches The Final Of The Bett Awards 2016Beauchapp is a custom built, all-in-one application, that provides access to essential school information for students, parents and teachers. Students can access their timetable, homework tasks, news bulletins, set reminders, check their smart card balance, monitor academic progress with access to current data snapshots and check attendance and punctuality. The app has been recognised for its innovation and has made it to the final of the 2016 bett awards in the Free Digital Content/Open Educational Resources – content suite category. The app is up against 6 other entries for the category with the winner announced at the awards ceremony on 20th January 2016.

Regardless of the overall outcome, to be recognised as a finalist by bett is a huge achievement and demonstrates how forward thinking we are here at Beauchamp. The app continues to be improved by the IT Development team with upgrades and new features planned for the near future – watch this space.

Business Meetings, Product Proposals, Marketing Strategies...These aren’t terms one usually hears associated with a small group of French A2 students. However this year we, an A level French class, have decided to take part in a program called Achievers International, which aims to link Languages and Business. We have been in regular contact with a partner school, LP YSER in Reims France, and will trade and sell goods from our respective countries in an authentic business environment. It is a year long enterprise project. Throughout the project we will have the opportunity to develop our language skills, team working skills, IT skills and become better informed about business and international economics. The project is in the initial phases and all is going well. Come and meet us in the foyer at some point soon, when we will be selling French products! (Sofiya, Neha, Anushka, Rosie, Reanna & Dom)

On Wednesday 2nd December, Beauchamp held a STEM seminar in order to provide advice, guidance and information to young people looking at careers in science, mathematics, technology or engineering. This evening also included talks and discussions from a range of very experienced professionals in these fields. This sold out event was busy, vibrant and stimulating and something that Beauchamp will seek to replicate in the future.

Parent Carer ForumIn the Autumn term we launched our Parent Forums on a Tuesday evening for Beauchamp parents/carers and our coffee mornings on a Tuesday morning for both Beauchamp parents and parents/carers with children at our partner primary schools. These have been very popular and we have covered a wide range of topics, both academic and pastoral. In addition to this we have set up a book group for parents/carers and we meet once every six weeks on a Thursday evening at 6pm.

All of these parent/carer sessions will be continuing in the New Year and all are welcome. If you have any suggestions for topics you would like us to cover please contact Georgina Cashmore at [email protected]

This term has seen the start of the Beauchamp College High Flyers programme. High achieving students from all year groups were identified in September and have been encouraged to sign up for a wide variety of academic sessions that have run fortnightly. The idea is to give students a taster of university study and stretch them through introducing them to a variety of challenging topics that go further than the taught curriculum. This term we have been privileged to welcome a number of speakers from institutions to speak on an area of subject specialism.

• Professor Kevin Schurer spoke on the discovery of Richard III (Professor Schurer was the geneticist responsible for identifying the living remains of the king)

• Dr Revers Donga gave an interactive introduction to neuroscience

• Dr Lisa Coar spoke on the issue of male body image in the writings of Oscar Wilde

• Alex Blower from the University of Southampton gave an advisory session on applying to competitive universities

• Nick Foster and Leena Sodha from the University of Leicester’s school of Actuarial Science gave a practical session on actuarial maths

The lectures have proved very popular with over 100 students at times. Students have been engaged in the sessions and asked interesting questions that have developed their understanding. After Christmas the lectures continue with Dr James Hamill from the University of Leicester speaking on the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela on January 14th. Students will be able to sign up in the week leading up to the lecture. Any students who are interested in attending three one off lectures should contact Mr Kilbey ([email protected]) or Mr Pearson ([email protected]).

High Flyers Pathway

Team LeicestershireThis academic year has seen the introduction of a school fixtures model called ‘Team Leicestershire’ whereby schools compete in a variety of sports in their respective boroughs. The rationale behind this is to have a system where fixtures can be local in the first instance before the winners move further a field in the county. Therefore in most competitions our teams complete in the Oadby and Wigston borough and compete against Wigston College and South Wigston High school, with the winners progressing to play others in the county. This year with schools changing age ranges leaves us short in terms of fixtures as neighbouring schools in our borough do not yet have years 10 and 11. We are, however, looking to compensate this by including friendly fixtures and obviously offering our in house competitions.

In the U15 football the boys have beaten South Wigston and then lost to Wigston College, meaning that Wigston College progressed. The U16 boys have beaten Wigston College and are still to play South Wigston High, needing only a draw to qualify to the next phase. The delay has been due to their excellent run in the national cup competition.

In netball our year 10’s have won their fixtures against South Wigston High 20-3 and Wigston College 10-4, however the year 11’s lost their fixtures against South Wigston High 7-3 and Wigston College 17-7.

In Rugby we have automatically progressed into the next round as neither Wigston College or South Wigston High have rugby teams.

The basketball was played as a one off competition with schools in the local area who can put out a team. Our U15 boys won their competition by beating Lutterworth College 36-6 and Kibworth 19–5. The U16 boys finished 2nd out of 4 teams, beating Robert Smythe 15-7, Lutterworth College 24-4 and narrowly losing 20-19 to South Wigston High, who went on to win the competition.

We are yet to play Badminton fixtures within ‘Team Leicestershire’.

girls U19 TennisThis year we have entered an U19 Girls Tennis team to the Aegon Schools Tennis Competition which is a national competition.

So far the team have won through the group stage to make their way into the last 16 teams nationally. The team is made up of Jess Buchanan (year 12), Martha Thomas (year 12), Frannie Simpson (year 13) and Mimi Bjelic (year 11) and so far the girls are yet to lose a match!

The team will play their next match on February 10th against the winners of Bedford Girls’ School and Stowe School.

Well done so far and good luck for the future matches!

HockeyFor the second year in a row Beauchamp’s U16 indoor hockey team qualified for the National Indoor Schools tournament in Wolverhampton. Beauchamp were given the tougher task of being placed in the harder of the two groups with some extremely strong private schools (with international scholarship students) present.

The team got off to a strong start with a 3-0 win over Warwick School with Mahang Patel displaying some brilliant keeper skills. This was followed up by a great performance against Trent College who were the tournament favourites but despite several strong attacks the team could not find the net and they lost 1-0. Beauchamp were still in a qualification position at this point, but sadly an overwhelmingly strong performance by Worksop College (5-1) saw Beauchamp’s fate rest on the results of others. A win was needed to be in with a chance of qualifying for the next round. Rohan Bhuhi put in a captain’s performance to lead the team to a 3-2 victory over Bromsgrove School. Sadly it was not enough and Beauchamp finished third therefore finishing just outside the qualification places.

Several of the team went on to represent the Leicester Mens’ Hockey Club in the club competition and won therefore qualifying for the next stage of the National Competition. We wish the boys the best of luck in their fixtures after Christmas in the National outdoor competitions.
