The objective was to encourage people to “Dust off their Dunlop’s”, get back into tennis and to promote the Club and facilities it offers. I can only say that the feedback I received on the day was nothing but positive and more importantly it was absolutely great to see sixty people playing tennis in the organised competition having had to turn a few last minute entrants away and at least another five members arrive to play and utilise the spare court that was available. Like all of these events there were a host of members who in their own way contributed to the success of the day and Naree and the committee are most appreciative of your input to making the event the success that it was. To me it was personally gratifying to receive such positive feedback from members who have been around the club for more than a decade or two. In comparison to the previous Saturday where only 20 25 regular members turned up to play, it was great to see over 30 new players and over 30 members turn up to enjoy the day, creating a fantastic atmosphere that has not been seen for a while and which can only bode well for the future of the club. The great success of the tournament encourages us to run more of this style of event and to promote new activities like Cardio Tennis. In particular we are looking to increase our mid week activities and en- courage any who are interested to speak with Sophie Row, Sue David or Jack Harvey to explore options that are available or being developed. Additionally we are working to improve the options and facilities around the club and encourage all members to put suggestions forward that will make that little difference to the feel around the club and how it operates. This month we have replaced the water fountain and introduced a coffee machine. The next challenge will be to develop a plan to im- prove the ablution facilities and control of the court lighting that are currently deficient. Again have a wonderfully safe break over the festive season and look forward to seeing you all at the club or on the courts during the festive season. The festive season is not far away so I take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and that as you travel either lo-cally or overseas you have a safe and fantastic break from the normal routine. Having said that, I look forward to celebrating the festive season with you at some stage as we run into the Christmas and New Year break.

As noted in our November newsletter we have introduced changes to the way we run Saturday Social Tennis and also introduced the Mixed Dou-bles Tournament that was aimed at encouraging former tennis players to pick up a racket and play again.

While we are continuing to finesse the manage-ment of Saturday Social Play I believe the concept is right and we will achieve the ultimate, more equitable outcome of sharing the responsibilities of running the club and have everyone more in-volved.

The introduction and running of the Mixed Dou-bles Tournament last week could only be described as a great success. The really encouraging aspect of the day was the great number of couples who played and that many of them have their children playing juniors on Friday evenings so we look forward to seeing some of those parents coming down perhaps in the New Year.

This event would not have happened without the drive from Naree to promote the concept and ultimately make it happen. Congratulations Naree; it was truly a great day. Like all of these events there were a host of members who in their own way contributed to the success of the day and Naree and the committee are most appreciative of your input to making the event the success that it was. To me it was personally gratifying to receive such positive feedback from members who have

been around the club for more than a decade or two. In comparison to the previous Saturday where only 20 – 25 regular members turned up to play, it was great to see over 30 new players and over 30 members turn up to enjoy the day, creating a fantastic atmosphere that has not been seen for a while and which can only bode well for the future of the club.

The great success of the tournament encourages us to run more of this style of event and to promote new activities like Cardio Tennis. Footnote

It is with great sadness I heard of the passing away of

Phil Dalton this morning after a short illness. Phil was

a hugely enthusiastic member of our club and he will

be sorely missed by all our members. Condolences to

Phil’s family on their loss, particularly so soon after the

loss of Phil’s wife Mandy only a short time ago. More

information in regards to Phil’s funeral can be found in

the newsletter.

President’s Update

December Christmas Edition

The recent inaugural Mixed Doubles Tournament was a resounding

success with 60 players turning up for a fabulous afternoon of

round robin tennis. With the courts festooned with colourful para-

sols and the clubhouse filled with players, families and supporters,

the atmosphere was abuzz. With three grades vying for winners’

titles, the finals provided a tense finish for Groups A and B in par-

ticular, both requiring deciding Tie-breakers. Many players and

families stayed on for a barbecue after play and continued on until

late.

Special thanks to our sponsors of the day, David Culley at Tennis

Approach, Kirkwood Deli, Lottery West and the Nail Depot. Particu-

lar thanks also to Maxine Mazzuchelli who was a late scratch due to

injury but did a marvellous job of running the kitchen. Also to Sally

Casey, Simon, Malcolm and Des for running the bar, Steve, Sue,

Andrew and Bill with the front desk and announcements, Sophie for

the marketing and to all the members for their extraordinary sup-

port on the day, inviting players, bringing in afternoon tea and sal-

ads, the day could not have been the success it was.

Photos of the day have been uploaded onto a shared website so if

you are interested in viewing or ordering any of the photos, please

Final results were as follows:

Group A

Winners: Sue Moonen & Simon Norrish (just lucky!)

Runner’s Up: Fleur and Peter Bauchop

Group B

Winners: Kat and Glen Green (Youth defeats age!

Runner’s Up: Carol Phillippe & Des Pearce

Group C

Winners: Shirley Roper and Greg Blyth (Steady wins the day!)

Runner’s Up: Fiona and Nick Allen

Ladies Division 2

Our Ladies Team have moved up a division due to winning the

pennant last season and it has not been easy. Great tennis but

just not getting the sets needed for a win. Despite coming up

against some very tough opposition we are hanging on to fifth

position on the ladder and have only one more game to play be-

fore the summer break. Probably just in time before the weather

heats up again!

Carol Philippe Captain

Men’s Over 35 Division 2

I'm afraid we are not travelling all that well. We have only won

one match so far this season. The standard of tennis has been

very high and we have enjoyed the games (with the exception

maybe of last week when the temperatures were 37.5 degrees on

a shaded verandah above the courts!) This weekend will be more

enjoyable with a cooler change on the horizon.

James Shaw Captain

Men’s Over 35 Division 3

As mentioned in my last report, our division this year is split into

two halves with our team competing to be the best of the lower

half.

Interestingly, we are finding there is a definite link between who is

playing on the court and our wins this season. In fact, there are

a few players that have performed and are part of all the winning

teams this season, and unfortunately others who don’t appear to

be able to win when needed.

This ‘coincidence’ is causing a fair bit of dissension within the

ranks and there are individuals rather unfairly claiming that the

captain is absent when the highly ranked teams are being played.

I would like to set the record straight as I think this is a little

harsh and would like to take this opportunity to state that this is

just a most unfortunate scheduling coincidence.

Cheers

Captain Steve (soon to be retired, possibly sacked)

Pennants Update

The boys from Swanbourne Cellars joined APTC for the recent

Sponsors Challenge that is offered to our Gold and Silver sponsors

as part of their sponsorship package. It would seem the boys

shamed our side so badly, the whiteboard got put away before we

could tally up the scores!

Progressive Dinner

The Annual Progressive Dinner was well attended by both mem-

bers past and present. It was great to see people such as Fiona

and Andrew Lang and Graham and Pam Ford come back and enjoy

the evening. Also James and Liz Thackray; James has taken on

past member Sean Fraser’s job whom some of you will remember

and we hope to see James and Liz down at the club for a hit

sometime in the future. Thanks to all those members who opened

their homes to host courses and to those who brought ‘pud’ down

to the clubhouse and thanks to Naree for the entertainment (or

should we thank the sparkling wine)! A great night had by all.

Stop Press—Sad News

The Club is extremely saddened to hear of the passing away of long-standing member, Phil Dalton this morning after a relatively short battle with

cancer. It seems only a short time ago we were advising the members of Phil’s wife, Mandy passing away suddenly while on holiday in Bali. Phil

was a well-liked and respected member of the Allen Park Tennis Club and we will miss his enthusiastic involvement with the Club. For those who

wish to attend the funeral, it will be held at 10.00 am on Tuesday 14 December in the Bowra and O'Dea premises in 312 South Street, Hilton.

Look out for NEW CARDIO TENNIS SESSIONS starting in the New

Year! This is the hot new fitness based program in tennis. The

Cardio Tennis Program includes a short dynamic warm-up, a cardio

workout phase and a cool-down phase. Each phase has drills specifi-

cally designed to be fun, challenging and to get you moving and

your heart rate pumping. The goal is to get a person’s heart rate in

their aerobic training zone (65-85% of their maximum recom-

mended heart rate) for the entire session and keep it there. And

while Cardio Tennis is not designed to make you a great player, you

do improve because you hit so many forehands, backhands, and

volleys while getting a fun, healthy workout. Session times and days

and further information will be sent out shortly.

David Culley Club Coach

Free coaching for our adult members was held 2 weeks ago and

there will be more free sessions in the coming weeks. As always,

these are popular sessions so look out on the Noticeboard in the club

house for next dates and get your name down quickly as it’s first in,

best dressed!

The club will host the Annual Community Carols by Candlelight on

Friday December 17th with gates open from 6pm. This popular

event has become a regular Christmas feature in the calendar of

local families and all are welcome. MC, Peter Smith will introduce

the Claremont Concert Band who will play an hour of carols. Can-

dles will be provided but bring your own picnic dinner or alterna-

tively a sausage sizzle and drinks can be bought on the night. Bring

your family to this delightful community festive occasion. For more

information, call Maxine on 0401 504 792

Carols by Candlelight 17th December

For the last year, David Culley has been running a mother’s

coaching session on a Thursday morning with the added bonus

of offering a crèche facility. As it has proven to be exception-

ally popular with local mums, in the New Year we’ll be extend-

ing Thursday mornings to offer social play running in parallel to

the coaching. If you’re interested in joining either the coaching

or social play sessions, please contact Naree Cowan or Sophie

Row. Fees will be applicable to the coaching sessions and

crèche on a per term basis, otherwise just come along for

some social tennis and a coffee afterwards. The new term will

commence on Thursday February 10th from 9.30am. Please

contact Naree Cowan or Sophie Row for more details.

For other Mid Week play opportunities, the following sessions

are currently running and new members are welcome to join

in:

Thursday from 4.00pm Green and Blue Mixed

Wednesday at 8.30am Yellow and Green Ladies

Tuesday from 3.00pm Yellow and Green Men

We have other members who are interested in starting a twi-

light session. If you are interested, please contact Sophie Row

or Sue David to assist in coordinating a group.

Santa will visit Allen Park Tennis Club on Saturday 18th De-

cember from 5pm. Bring your families along and bring an item

to add to a cheese platter; either crackers or a cheese. Games

for children will commence on Court 1 from 5pm with Santa

arriving in his ute some time after. Supply a gift for your child,

up to the value of $10. Happy Hour will also start at the same

time so come along and enjoy the festive spirit on our final

playing day before Christmas.
