The year 2013 ended in the usual manner for the ladies of the Frauentreffen: On 4 December we were again invited to Bettina Wiesmann’s lovely home in Milnerton for our traditional braai of Bratwurst and Cervelat, kindly donated by Martha Reichmuth. Thank you so much, ladies! There were more than enough mouth-watering salads and breads on offer, especially, as our numbers were slightly depleted due to holidays and sickness. With great restraint we however managed to keep some space for the delicious fare displayed on the laden dessert table, which even included some home-made ice cream! We also took the opportunity to offer our members the traditional Christmas biscuits and other goods prepared for our annual Christmas Sale. One whole table was dedicated to the beautiful and very artistic table arrangements of greenery, candles and shiny baubles, which are assembled every year by Gerda Tandler. They are very sought after by our ladies and

represent a considerable contribution to our coffers - thank you very much, Gerda!

The actual Christmas Sale was once again held in Jonkershoek on 8 December, combining it as usual with the visit of the Samichlaus. It was a beautiful and very hot day, in fact almost a little too hot for the cakes and coffee we were trying to sell. (Maybe we’ll switch to cool drinks and ice cream next year!) Nevertheless, most of our goods found a buyer and we had many lovely prizes to bestow on the happy winners of our raffle. As our treasurer I can confirm that our takings will more than cover the donations and events planned for the new year.

A very big Thank You to all our contributors and helpers, and our very best wishes for a happy and successful 2014 to all!

As always for the last Number of Decades on the 6th of December some 21 of us which is by far not enough (last year we had 33 ) got togrther at our Clubhouse for the oldest function of our Club.

One of the men Adolf Aebi is over 90 years old and remembers this function back to 40’s and 50’s. He also won a number of times like last year and came second this year which goes to prove that he is keen and good Jasser.

Despite the fact that we would have liked to have more people since only the usual crowd showed, we still had a lot of fun. We first played our game then had a lekker snack and another drink and the evening finished around 22.30 hrs. Please think and diarize it now already for next year, remember it is always on the 6th known to us as the St. Nicolas Day. Till next time on the 6th see you. Heinz Mettler

presi reportdear club-memberS and friendS of the SwiSS Social & SportS club.

I don’t want to start by wishing you a fabulous 2014 and at the same time be looking back at the Happenings of 2013; - there’ve been too many sad stories, so I rather decided to only look ahead, to certainly an eventful and hopefully more pleasant 12 months.

So what can we look forward to ??→ For our Country..... to a more focused Government, tackling the real issues;→ For our “Mother City” .... to a very ex-citing year, being the ‘Designer – Capital’ of the World.→ For our Club....., well YOU, our mem-bers, have it in your hands !!I believe, that the facilities we have, are of the highest standard !!Look at our precious ‘gem’, Jonkershoek ! Where else, in such proximity to wherev-er most of us live, do you find such tran-quillity, being in the middle of nature; yet, we too often seem to prefer other attractions, instead of using our beauti-ful resort to relax, recharge our batteries

and , most of all, make new friends !!After a fairly strenuous transition – period from our ‘old’ to our ‘new’ home, the Club-House in Green Point is show-ing the successful results it deserves, with all the hard work that has gone into it.The outside – area, bordering onto the ever-so-well-designed and well-managed ‘Urban-Park’, has become a real asset, in comparison to what we were previously looking at !The inside, including our finished ‘Alpenstueble’, is equally inviting when meeting on a Club-Night or by enjoying one of the many events. (Don’t forget that ‘THE ALPENSTUEBLI’ is avail-able for Private Functions, i.e. your Birthdays,Anniversary etc)

On the down-side, very disappointingly, we have not been able to find the right Caterer to see the opportunities, which our Club has to offer; inquiries from outsiders to book our venue for events, without which we will not

be able to manage our Club on a vi-able basis, are plentiful; we are in high demand !!

Whilst we are taking our time to identi-fy, this time hopefully, the right candi-date, Nadin Pospech andMoira will ‘keep the wheels turning’ , in the interim ! – A ‘BIG’ Thanks to both of them..

HAVE A SPENDID 2014 !!! (See you all at ‘Jonkies’ or Green Point !! – Promise ???)

Stefan – Your Presi

don’t miss it !!!

Food, Drink and Fun ‘galore’ !!

13-15 September 2013

It’s has been a tradition for the past couple of years that Swiss who like to Jassen meet at Mimosa Lodge in Montagu for a tournament. We mainly play Schieber and Coiffeur Jass. This is not a dead serious affair and nobody gets annoyed (or if - then only a little bit...) if the wrong card gets played. The team at Mimosa lodge, under the lead of owners Fida and Bernhard Hess, spoil us with first class meals, a lovely atmosphere and an interesting outing on the Saturday.(something different to discover every year ) This year we went to Marbrin Olive farm where we

learnt more about the process of making olive oil, tasted various types and had a lovely al fresco lunch. After many games and looong hours the trophy went to Michael Hauser. Also the younger ones played some games and had a competition - and the nice thing is, from the looser to the winner, everybody walks away with a prize. Thank you to the sponsors for their generous donations and Fida and Bernhard for oganizing it.The next championship is planned for September 2014 - we hope to see you there

christmas Dinner at the cLuBhouseSaturday 14 December was a busy day at the Swiss ClubIt started in the morning with a Christmas market where presents such as Lebkuchenhäuser, biscuits, great handmade jewellery, artistic tea pots, knitted handbags, plants and much more could be bought.

Fabian served his lovely coffee and the bar was also a popular spot! After the Christmas market Moira and Stephan went out of their way to transform the Club into a venue fit for a Christmas dinner. We were amazed of the variety of great food that came out of

that small kitchen. Turkey, Tongue, Tripe, Roastbeef, Kassler, Sauerkraut, Rotkohl to name but a few items on the buffet.

The Club was full to capacity and everybody enjoyed the entertainment by our “Huusmusig”. Thank you to the musicians!

Well done and thank you to Moira, Stephan and their team, if it was not for you (lacking a caterer at the moment) we wouldn’t have had such a lovely Christmas Dinner.Andrea Hauser, Cape Town

Dear Members We hope you all had a relaxed festive season please join us for the family camping weekend from the 7 - 9 Feb. to support the Waldfest on the 9th. There will be a Waldgottesdienst in German on the 2 March organized by the Stadt Mission. We have noticed an increase in the population of bees, a hive has been removed thanks to Malan Oosthuizen. Please be carefull walking barefeet, some of them are on the ground. If you are stung, pull out the sting and rub an onion onto the area, it acts like a natural antihistamine. Thanks to Marcel Raupp for replacing the elements on both geysers, sponsored by George Correvon. See you soon René Bützer and the Jonkershoek Team

A Story of Elves & Heinzelmännchen

Lucky for the Swiss community there is a mystical group of elves and Heinzelmännchen who look after our grounds in Jonkershoek, adding braai places, planting trees or felling somewhere absolutely necessary, installing a shower close to the river and one next to the overnight-chalet, and create many more such amenities.Do YOU have this healthy dose of love for dirt and cameraderie and nature to be motivated enough to help upkeep the splendour of this site? What is stopping you to come out and refresh your memory as to what awaits Day Campers and Overnight Campers in our forest? Go tomorrow or come to the Waldfescht. Afterwards you could sit back and hope that this wonderful status-quo miraculously goes on forever (in the “Heinzelmännchen von Köln”-story it doesn’t!) or you could join the volunteer system that will see volunteers like you streaming to Jonkershoek on Saturdays, as eager to contribute in any small or big way as the first crew was - many, many years ago when the beautiful chalet was built. After 50-plus years, to still be celebrating events on the stoep of this chalet, is testament to our early members’ dedication and to our dedication today to this legacy.Feeling a certain sense of ownership and to have a stake in all this through your hands’ and hearts’ contribution – isn’t it just as rewarding as the enjoyment of going camping and braaing there?
