NEWSLETTER 68 (March 26, 2012)

EUROPEAN CHESS UNION WON THE COURT CASE AGAINST TURKISH

CHESS FEDERATION IN CAS

In October 2011, the Turkish Chess

Federation filed an Appeal at the Court of

Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the

decision of the ECU concerning the award of

competitions during the bidding procedure

for 2013.

According to the Appeal by the Turkish Chess Federation, the decision to award the

European Youth Championship 2013 to the organizer from Budva, Montenegro was

illegal. Also, the Appellant believed that they should have been awarded the

organization of the European Senior Team Championship 2013 directly.

In the arbitration between the Turkish Chess Federation and the European Chess

Union, the CAS and the Panel of three Arbitrators presided by Mr. Robert Reid from

England delivered the Arbitral Award on March 22, 2012.

The Appeal filed by the Turkish Chess Federation was dismissed, while the

decisions made by the European Chess Union Board were accepted as valid. In

addition, according to CAS, ‘the costs of the arbitration... shall be borne by the

Appellant’.

You can download the complete Arbitral Award from the ECU web site.

EUROPEAN CHESS UNION BOARD MEETING IN PLOVDIV

The European Chess Union Board meeting was

held in "Novotel" hotel in Plovdiv during the

European Individual Chess Championship.

The main topic of the meeting was the

endorsement of the Written Declaration ‘Chess

in School’ in the European Parliament.

ECU President Silvio Danailov thanked the Board members and others who helped

the Declaration to be adopted. Danailov believes that this is the historic step for chess

which has now been recognized not only as a sport, but also as a school subject.

Therefore, an important pre-election promise of the current ECU management has

been fulfilled.

ECU PR Officer Boyko Hristov and ECU Commercial Director MarianaTodorova also

attended the meeting. They gave their reports about their activities between the two

meetings. The European Chess Union Board made the decision on the procedure

concerning the changes of the ECU Tournament Rules in 2012.

1000 tn! NEW EDITION OF ‘CHESS INFORMANT’ SUPPORTED BY THE

EUROPEAN CHESS UNION

A well-known publisher ‘Chess informant’ has published a publication ‘1000 tn!’

supported by the European Chess Union. The foreword for this edition was written

by the President of the European Chess Union, Mr. Silvio Danailov.

The European Chess Union has 500 copies of this valuable book and they plan to give

the copies to the national federations as a present, especially to those in which

learning chess theory and publishing have been less developed.

In his foreword, Danailov says:

"It was with great pleasure that I accepted the invitation of our friends from the

Chess Informant to the European Chess Union to become a partner in publishing the

selection of 1000 most important theoretical novelties arising from chess games

played in the last forty years. Chess Informant is one of the most eminent chess

publishers in the world and certainly has laid foundation for good communication

between the author and the readers. The language of the symbols in the Chess

Informant represents the highest level of communication between chess players and

chess fans throughout the world. We can only praise the idea to publish the book that

highlights some of the most inspiring moments in the modern chess. What makes

this comprehensive book so special is that it is not only a reminder of theoretical

novelties, but also represents the whole development of the chess theory to date.

Page 4: NEWSLETTER 68 (March 26, 2012) · Chess Informant to the European Chess Union to become a partner in publishing the selection of 1000 most important theoretical novelties arising

© Europechess.net Page 4

Certainly, the fact that the members of the jury during the whole period were the

most eminent chess players makes us believe that the choice and evaluation of

theoretical novelties were highly professional and authoritative.

First as a chess player and later as a coach and manager of two World Champions, I

always paid special attention to theoretical background. Theoretical novelties from

the previous period were always a very important factor during the preparation

process. I am very much pleased that the European Chess Union will provide the

national federations, chess players from small nations, trainers and young players

with such a work of art and therefore contribute to their education."

The new book ‘1000 TN!’ collects the best 1000 theoretical novelties from Chess

Informants 11 to 110 and provides an adventurous journey through the development

of chess openings during the last forty years. Moreover, in every theoretical line, the

latest word on the state of theory according to latest editions of Encyclopedia of chess

openings was added. From 1971 to 2011 the Chess Informant jury convened to vote

on the best theoretical novelty from the previous volume. Once, and only once, the

nine-member jury was in complete concordance regarding the winning novelty. It

was like a-once-in-a-lifetime moment that the stars align in perfect harmony, where

one game scores above all others as a clear winner with the maximum ninety points!

In the contest of TN’s, who actually won the game was of lesser importance than

whose idea contributed the most to chess theory.
