YEAR 9 GEELONG TERTIARY FUTURES PROGRAM
As second term rapidly approaches we find our Year 9’s preparing to
get involved in the second year of the Geelong Tertiary Futures
Program. This innovative program is based on a similar Gordon Tertiary
Taster Program that has operated at NSC since 2007.
Within the compulsory subject of GROW all Year 9 students will spend
10 Fridays at campuses of the Gordon TAFE experiencing a range of
tertiary studies alternating between hands on work (preview classes)
and learning about the workplace (theory) from skilled and experienced
teachers.
It is a great chance for our students to experience an adult learning
environment and get a first look at courses they may potentially study in
the future.

$1000 FREE KIDS DENTAL* WITH THE CHILD
DENTAL BENEFITS SCHEDULE!
Great news, the Child Dental Benefits Schedule continues in 2016! The Commonwealth
Government dental scheme provides eligible children with a $1000 free kids dental
benefit* on selected dental services within a 2 year calendar period.
In 2014 and 2015 many families were surprised that they were eligible for the free $1000
benefit*. To gain access to benefits, children must be eligible for Medicare, must be
between 2 and 17 years of age for at least 1 day of the calendar year with the child or
parent, guardian or carer receiving Family Tax Benefit Part A or another relevant
government payment.
Not sure if you’re kids are eligible? Contact your local Pacific Smiles Dental Centre, have
your Medicare card ready and they can easily check to see if your kids are eligible or
have remaining benefits from 2014.
Information provided by Pacific Smiles Dental: visit pacificsmilesdental.com.au for further
information. *Free when services covered by the Commonwealth Government’s
Young People and Asthma
Asthma Australia is working with key organisations supporting young people’s health to help improve asthma health
outcomes for 12-25 year olds. A Facebook page, Young People with Asthma – Australia, provides a range of
information for these young people and their supporters. Every two months Asthma Australia will also run a
Question and Answer session that is proving very popular. Check out the page for our posts and promotion for
upcoming Q and A sessions.
GRIP LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
On Tuesday of last week (16/2) the Year 12 Student Leaders, Alex Jones, Hannah Harrison, Nick Watson
and Ebony Chalmers participated in the
Grip Leadership Conference at the
Melbourne Exhibition Centre.
The event brought together School
Captains and SRC leaders from around
Victoria, and explored how these
students can make a meaningful
contribution to their own school
communities. This was of particular
relevance to our Student Leaders, who
have expressed an intention to breathe
more life into our own SRC, allowing
for greater ‘student voice’ in 2016.
Even if the temporary tattoos that had
survived the previous day’s Swimming
Sports did raise the eyebrows of some
conference participants, the Student
Leaders should be commended for
their positive engagement across the
day.
Many thanks to Mr. Paul Kellett for his
role in organizing this great
opportunity for the students!

LAUNCH OF THE PTECH PROGRAM TO YEAR 9 STUDENTS On Thursday January 28th Year 9 students attended the launch of
our new and exciting PTech Program to commence in 2017 at
Newcomb Secondary College. This program is an opportunity
for our Year 9 students to work in both their traditional school
setting, whilst at the same time studying a Certificate level
qualification in an industry based work place. Our industry
partners ie: Barwon Health, Bendigo Bank, GMHBA, Opteon
Property Group and Tribal Campus (Sky Software) will provide
our students with an industry mentor to work with and give our
students the opportunity to experience a hands-on experience in
a work place setting. Our students were welcomed to the launch
by Mr Nicholas Wyman who is the CEO of the Skilling Australia
Foundation (the organisation who will manage this new program
together with Newcomb Secondary
College). Students enjoyed
a short film giving
information on each of the
business partner industries
and hearing about the
possible fields of study they
each might like to
undertake in 2017. Areas
of study will include ICT, Business and Finance and Health related
fields. Each student received a personally signed copy of Mr. Wyman’s
new book called Job U – a guide to what is needed to succeed in the
workplace, a lanyard and USB with information about PTech on it. This
is a very exciting program where students will have the opportunity to
not only complete their VCE or VCAL but be able to undertake an
industry supported qualification pathway. Further information will follow in future newsletters.
STUDENT INSURANCE
School Injuries and Insurance Parents and guardians are generally responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport
costs. Most medical costs will be refundable by Medicare. If you are a member of an ambulance or health insurance fund, you may
also be able to claim transport or other expenses from the fund.
Personal property is often brought to school by students, staff and visitors. This can include mobile phones, calculators, toys,
sporting equipment and cars parked on school premises. The Department of Education and Training does not hold insurance for
personal property brought to school, does not hold accident insurance for school students and it has no capacity to pay for any loss
or damage to such property.
Is other insurance cover available? Yes.
The Department is aware of two insurers, JUA Underwriting Agency Pty Ltd and Willis Australia Ltd, that provide accident insurance
policies for students. These policies provide specific benefits for students who are injured in accidents for a reasonably low cost.
Other insurers may also provide a similar policy.
