Tintagel Garden Club The final meeting for 2014 was our Quiz, Wine and Cheese, and photo competition in December. The worthy winner of the latter, entitled 'Wild Life in My Garden' and judged by Eve Stratton, was Diana Mills with a delightful close up of a fritillary butterfly; the main raffle prize was a sumptuous basket of Christmas fare. The questions for the quiz were set by last years winners and, as usual, we were kept in order by John Stratton; many of us were left as ever vowing to do some more serious homework --next year! It was another very enjoyable evening. Our A G M was again held at Bossiney House Hotel; the hard working committee had provided an interesting programme for 2014, and managed the finances to enable a considerable donation to be made to a local charity; well known speakers have also been booked for 2015. Once the formalities were over we were spoilt for choice from a colourful and tempting buffet; the party atmosphere continued on well past our bedtimes. The first of those speakers was Sandra Goodswen, on 20th February, who reminded us, on a whistle stop world tour, of just how reliant we are on the diverse plants that grow on this planet. Coffee and tea ( it was the Chinese who called it char), sugar and many nuts that provide oil for cooking, cosmetics, and a mired other of commodities. cotton a centuries old fabric, together with dyes such as indigo, woad, turmeric, and madder all have their origins in plants. The valuable uses that the trees supply are a subject in itself. The fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers in our own gardens are important, but there is the wider picture of world farming --- wheat, barley, maize, rice and sorghum are some of the basics that keep us fed, with the addition of more exotics such as mangos and pineapples being now more widely available. Even cannabis has a legal side --- it is grown as a crop from which hemp is produced to make rope; an impressive gateway and fencing can be seen at the Eden project entirely made from rope. Sandra has travelled widely and her talk was illustrated with excellent slides; we were left in no doubt just how important our plant life is to mankind's very existence. Our next meeting --- Friday 20th March, "Growing Vegetables" by Diana Lee. Sally Dale (01840 770960)

Update from local MP Dan Rogerson: (February 2015) All residents and businesses need access to a decent broadband service and whilst 95% of Cornwall will have it by the end of this year under the current Superfast Cornwall scheme, I know that the remaining 5% of premises, including many in our area, still have very poor speeds. In my role as Government Minister for Rural Affairs I recently announced a multi-million pound investment scheme for Cornwall which will extend superfast fibre broadband to 99% of premises. If you cant access superfast fibre broadband and want to be considered for this new upgrade scheme please contact me, as I will be pushing for premises across North Cornwall to benefit from this new funding. In February NHS Kernow announced that they have chosen a consortium of GPs to operate out-of-hours and weekend doctors services across Cornwall. The service will begin this summer, taking over from the current private provider, Serco. The problems with our out-of-hours GP services under Serco have been well documented, with Tintagel and rural North Cornwall having particular problems with many people in our area struggling to get access to a doctor out-of-hours at weekends. Many of us will be reassured that the new service will be led by GPs, and I will be working to make sure that residents in our area get access to a good out-of-hours doctors services under this new contract. A cross-party Parliamentary committee report published recently has come forward with several recommendations to help dairy farmers cope with sharp falls in milk prices and factors beyond their control. The report recommended that the remit of the government's Groceries Code Adjudicator should be extended to cover dairy suppliers. The Groceries Adjudicator was an idea first raised by Cornish Liberal Democrats - it has now been set up by the Government to better protect farmers from abuse or mis-treatment by the big supermarkets. Clearly, the system isn't currently working in the best interest of all dairy farmers, which is why I am now looking at how the Groceries Adjudicator can be reformed to further improve the relationship between dairy farmer and supply chain, including supermarkets.

Update from Dan Rogerson: (March 2015) The news that Western Greyhound had ceased trading a few weeks ago was devastating news for everyone employed by the company, and for those who rely on their bus services to get out and about. Cornwall Council and local bus companies worked hard to take over bus routes and I was pleased to see that Stagecoach South West have taken over the 595 service linking Tintagel with Bude, Camelford and Wadebridge.

  • 11

In the longer term I am determined to look at all the options to invest in and improve the rural bus network. The Coalition Government has awarded a 48.9 million Growth Deal for Cornwall, which will see bus services across Cornwall reviewed and improved from next year. It is right that public transport improvements are a part of our growth strategy and I want to see our area get its fair share of this funding for improvements to the bus network In Parliament amongst the various debates and legislation being discussed, MPs have been debating tax avoidance in light of the recent revelations from HSBC. I am pushing for even more to be done to tackle aggressive tax avoidance and evasion, closing tax loopholes, and investing more in HM Revenue and Customs to help them clamp down on tax dodging this will bring in significant amounts of extra revenue that is needed to fund public services and to cut the deficit. We have also had some good news that the Government is changing the law to make it easier for companies that plague people with nuisance calls to be fined, up to half a million pounds. People are fed up of being pestered by unwanted marketing calls, silent and abandoned calls, spam texts and recorded messages day in and day out. For some people these calls are a nuisance, but for vulnerable residents they can be a menace that put people at risk of scams and fraud just as much as a crook or a pushy salesman turning up at their door. Thanks to everyone who took my nuisance calls survey last summer and to those who supported the campaign to crack down on nuisance calls I hope these tough new laws will see more companies punished and will reduce the number of nuisance calls people in our area are receiving. If there is anything that I can help with please dont hesitate to contact me. Best wishes, Dan Rogerson Address: 4, Tower Street, Launceston PL15 8BQ Telephone: 01566 777123 E-mail: [email protected]

DOG FOULING The Parish Council continues to receive complaints about dog fouling in the parish. Recent complaints have been received concerning the amount of dog fouling around Glebe Cliff as well as in Trevena Square and the nature area.

YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE ! Dog owners are reminded that should they be caught not cleaning up after their Dogs Cornwall Council will issue Fixed penalty notices to offenders currently set at 80.00 or prosecute at Magistrates Court where the penalty is up to 1000.00 maximum. In view of this Dog owners are urged to be responsible and clean up after your Dogs. Persons who clean up and throw the bags into hedges are liable for littering fixed penalties as they are committing an additional offence. The number of people able to issue a fixed penalty notice on behalf of Cornwall Council is much higher. We are also currently training staff from other departments to issue notices many of which do not wear uniform or have a marked vehicle as such there are significantly more people who are able to catch offenders and therefore the chance of being caught much greater. Should any member of the public see someone failing to clean up after their dog has fouled a public area, and know who the owner of the dog is or take vehicle details - please let us know on 0300 1234 212.
