Girls Go Extreme Melbourne Orienteering Excursion On 21st August the Girls Go Extreme Year 9 Girls went to Melbourne to participate in an Orienteering Challenge. The girls had to find certain landmarks around the city and were required to catch at least 1 city train and 1 city tram. The Girls split into 2 groups and all team members had jobs – either navigating, collecting evidence of stops, marking off landmarks etc.

It was wonderful to watch the girls learning life skills such as working together to read a City Train map whilst the hustle and bustle of the City still rushed around them. Both teams completed the challenge and it was a draw. We look forward to our next Challenge next week which is attempting the High Ropes Course in Anglesea!

Orienteering Orienteering was at the You Yangs, but first we went to Serendip Sanctuary and had a look at the wildlife there. We were shown the eastern bared bandicoot enclosure which has a high fence with barbed wire on top. It also goes a metre into the ground to stop animals digging under the fence. The bandicoot is a nocturnal animal so we didn’t get to see them. They are extinct in the wild. There was also some kangaroos, emu’s and etc. We had a walk through the sanctuary and headed to the You Yangs. When we got there we sat at the benches waiting to start the challenge. Together were shown how to use a compass and the map . The class split up into four groups of three and we headed to the first checkpoint and added that to our score card. My group had to go a different direction to the others, but of course Chloe had to go back because she thought she lost her phone, so we had to wait a while. After we all took off we had found another group on the way to a checkpoint so we talked to them for a bit then left to find more. In the end we found 16 checkpoints with a total of 700 points. During the walk we saw a few wallabies, different types of birds and other animals. We also walked pass the quarry in the north of the park and the checkpoint at the top had the most points (80). The points change from where the checkpoint is, if the checkpoint is close to the start it will be a low scoring checkpoint (30 points). After the day out in the You Yangs we headed back to school and

then went home.
