Page 3 – School news Remembrance Day celebrations

Children from St Mary’s recognised the centenary of the end of WWI with respect, humility and pride. So many of our pupils joined in the celebrations organised by the Henley in Arden branch of the Royal British Legion. Many of our children represented rainbows, beavers, cubs and guides and took part in the Remembrance service at St John’s, the two minutes silence on the high street and the parade through the town. Following the parade, six children beautifully read out war poems to a packed Memorial Hall. In the evening, over three thousand local residents joined in the torch-lit parade ending in a stunning firework display on the Mount. Thank you for sharing your photographs with us, we have loved seeing how you all spent the day.

Page 4 – School news Anti-bullying week

Week commencing Monday 12th November was a national anti-bullying week. To launch the week’s activities we started with odd socks day. Children came to school dressed in school uniform as normal but with bright, colourful, mis-matching socks. It was a fun start to the week and successfully raised awareness amongst the pupils about the theme. Each of the teachers talked in class about the potential effects of bullying and there is lovely evidence of these activities for parents to see on See-saw. At the end of the week, the children in Class 2 and 3 made a kindness paper chain on how to be a good friend.

Page 5 – School news Cyber-bullying assembly

As part of anti-bullying week, Mr Walker delivered an assembly to the children in key stage two combining cyber-bullying and e-safety. Mr Walker reminded them of the recommended minimum age requirements for social media; Snapchat 13, Fortnite 12, Instagram 13 and Whatsapp which has recently been raised from 13 to 16 years old. He showed them how to stay safe online if a parent gives them permission to use social media. Mr Walker originally planned a 20-minute presentation but in the end, the assembly lasted for 75 minutes, as it became an animated and incredibly helpful question and answer session. A lot of the time was spent discussing potential dangers from gaming and in particular the very popular ‘Fortnite.’ Regarding Fortnite, The Irish Times makes the following suggestions for parents; Battle Royale is essentially a room of 100 strangers. While the majority of Fortnite’s players aren’t there under false pretences, there have been some reported cases of grooming through the game. Best-case scenario, your children might learn a few choice swear words - the game might be rated 12 but that doesn’t mean the players are all around that age, and with an open mic and a tense game, things can get heated. The best thing to do is; check the settings, sit with your child, find out what they’re playing and who they are playing with, watch what’s going on and listen to the chat. In addition, you can insist that your child doesn’t add anyone as a friend that they don’t know in real life.

Page 6 – School news Miss Duxbury

In preparation for Open Day, we asked some of our key stage one parents for feedback on Miss Duxbury that we could pass on to prospective parents. The response was both overwhelming and lovely. It seemed a shame not to share such positive comments with you and Miss Duxbury who has yet to see these compliments. Thank you all for your speedy and encouraging responses.

“I really can't recommend Miss Duxbury highly enough; she does

an amazing job in reception and made starting school a fun and positive experience for our

little girl.”

“Both my husband and I feel incredibly lucky that our boys have been taught by Miss Duxbury. Miss

Duxbury is the perfect first teacher; she is kind, caring,

knowledgeable, always positive and patient whilst introducing all of the new ways of school to our boys.”

“Miss Duxbury is a wonderful teacher who goes above and beyond every day to ensure that each child achieves their best. We

couldn’t have wished for a better start to our daughter’s education.”

“Miss Duxbury is a fantastic reception teacher - she really

helped my daughter to settle into school life and enjoy learning. “

“Miss Duxbury is the perfect teacher for

reception to get them used to school life. Lovely and kind but firm and fair! “

“I couldn’t have asked for a better reception teacher for my son. She is so

professional and approachable, but above all, she genuinely cares for individual

children and their needs. I hope and pray she is still there when my daughter starts

school.”

“Miss Duxbury is a kind,

caring teacher. She is the perfect person to work with your child as they start their school journey”

Page 7 – School news Primary Maths Challenge

On Tuesday 13th November, children in Class 5 sat a test to try and get into the (PMC) Primary Maths Challenge. The PMC encourages enthusiasm, boosts confidence in mathematics and shows the different way questions can be asked. It also highlights the importance of problem solving as a means of helping pupils develop their reasoning skills. On Tuesday, ten children sat the test in class under exam conditions. Everyone did incredibly well with some very challenging questions. Congratulations to bronze winners; Alice B, Jefferson and Rohan, silver winners; Kit, Piers and Samuel and Alexander for his outstanding gold certificate.

Page 8 – School news Ogden Trust Circuits

Following a recent training course about electronic circuits, Mr Walker was generously given some fantastic new resources for school. In groups, we unpacked the boxes and looked at a few sheets of incomplete and incomplete circuits; we then tested to see if they worked or not. Some made motor spin, some made buzzers sound and some even made lights come on using switches. I really enjoyed using knowledge that I had already used in year 3 to carry out investigations using this equipment. Thank you Ogden Trust! Written by Albert – age 8

On Wednesday 21st November, Darci and Alice E launched an appeal on behalf of the Salvation Army. Darci who is the lead for Charity and fundraising on the School Parliament, would like to help the Salvation Army this Christmas. She is asking families to consider buying one extra Christmas present this year to help someone less fortunate. The present can be for a male or female, young or old. Darci would like to point out the Salvation Army help children, the elderly and the homeless. Gifts should not be gift-wrapped. Any donations should be brought into school before Monday 10th December. After this date, Darci and Mrs Greenway will visit the Salvation Army in Evesham to hand over our presents.

Page 10 – School news Other news

You may recall at the end of the last academic year, Albert, Alex, Dylan and Rohan gave an assembly on endangered species. Consequently, they have just received a certificate and a letter from WWF thanking them for their efforts. Well done boys.

We are delighted to announce that Mrs Cooke has finished her lengthy jury service and has returned to school. In assembly, Miss O’Leary and the children in Class 2 thanked Mr Green for the extra work he has done in their class over the last 7 weeks with a card and a gift. Don’t worry, it’s not a leaving gift!

Thank you to everyone who purchased merchandise for Children in need last Friday. Thanks to your generosity, we raised £80.
