Newsletter 21 - 2019 Thursday 18 th July Welcome back to Term 3 everyone! I hope you all had a relaxing break and stayed warm! It has certainly been very cold over the last few weeks. I think there might be a few more cold days to come as well! Last term the Foundation Learning Community won the Attendance Cup with an overall percentage of 95%. A great effort and a wonderful start to their education. Research shows that those students who have excellent attendance in the first year of school generally continue that throughout their schooling and on average achieve much better results. I can already see the wonderful development of our Foundation students that is greatly assisted by such great attendance. The other Learning Communities also had attendance percentages in the 90s with the Year 4s coming a very close second after their win in Term 1. Let’s see who can win the cup for Term 3! Congratulations also to those students who had 100% attendance for Term 2. You will find their names listed at the end of this newsletter. Congratulations also to Deethya Katakam who came third in the Victorian Junior Chess Championship in Under 8 Girls. What a fantastic effort! Deethya has now been selected for the 2020 Australian Junior Chess Championship to be held on the Gold Coast in January. We are so proud of her and wish her all the best. This term our Investigations topic is ‘I am a Physicist’ with the same big question for everyone ‘What Can I Invent?’ Get ready for some creative and interesting inventions as each Learning Community explores all their great ideas! On September 18 th , all the inventions will be on display for our big Design Expo. Put it in your calendar now so you can come along and participate in this great event. School Photo Day is coming up next week on Wednesday 24 th July. The envelopes went home this week. If you have misplaced your envelope, please contact the office. Family photo envelopes are also available at the school office on request. No sports uniforms are to be worn on this day. If you have sport that day, you can bring your runners in a bag to change into later. You do not need to bring your sports uniform. Remember that full Winter Uniform is required for school photos. Newsletter 21 - 2019 Thursday 18th July

Welcome back to Term 3 everyone! I hope you all had a relaxing break and

stayed warm! It has certainly been very cold over the last few weeks. I think

there might be a few more cold days to come as well!

Last term the Foundation Learning Community won the Attendance Cup with an

overall percentage of 95%. A great effort and a wonderful start to their

education. Research shows that those students who have excellent attendance

in the first year of school generally continue that throughout their schooling and

on average achieve much better results. I can already see the wonderful

development of our Foundation students that is greatly assisted by such great

attendance.

The other

Learning

Communities

also had

attendance percentages in the 90s with the Year 4s

coming a very close second after their win in Term 1.

Let’s see who can win the cup for Term 3!

Congratulations also to those students who had 100%

attendance for Term 2. You will find their names listed at

the end of this newsletter.

Congratulations also to

Deethya Katakam who

came third in the Victorian Junior Chess Championship in Under 8 Girls. What a fantastic

effort! Deethya has now been selected for the 2020 Australian Junior Chess Championship

to be held on the Gold Coast in January. We are so proud of her and wish her all the best.

This term our Investigations topic is ‘I am a Physicist’ with the same

big question for everyone ‘What Can I Invent?’ Get ready for some

creative and interesting inventions as each Learning Community

explores all their great ideas! On September 18th, all the inventions will be on display for our big

Design Expo. Put it in your calendar now so you can come along and participate in this great event.

School Photo Day is coming up next week on Wednesday 24th July. The

envelopes went home this week. If you have misplaced your envelope, please contact the

office. Family photo envelopes are also available at the school office on request. No sports

uniforms are to be worn on this day. If you have sport that day, you can bring your runners in

a bag to change into later. You do not need to bring your sports uniform.

Remember that full Winter Uniform is required for school photos.

This includes grey school jumpers and black shoes.

Also, last call for Year 6 students who would like to attend camp. Please contact the office by tomorrow.

Remember - Every Day Counts! Have a good weekend

August 1 – 31 Book Challenge

August is Book Month at Glenroy Central PS. Reading has the power to take

students on incredible journeys whether it be travelling to Neverland or Mars,

going back in time to Ancient Egypt or finding out how to look after a goldfish!

Books can make us laugh, can inspire us to take on new challenges and help

us to think creatively. Each of the Learning Community libraries has a wide

assortment of books for students to borrow.

Every student in the school

will be given a Reading is

my Super Power record sheet to complete by the end of August. All

Foundation and Grade 1/ 2 students will be encouraged to read a variety

of books, including dinosaur, animal, non-fiction and multicultural books.

They can read in their pyjamas, whilst sitting outside or lying on the

floor. As they complete each task, they colour in the square until all

tasks are completed. Students in Years 3-6 will be reading to complete

the Super Power ladder. As they read each book, they gain points and

move up the ladder. All they have to do is record the title and author of

each book they read. If they read 10 books they will reach the Super Hero level.

So the question for each student is: How many can you do?

FOUNDATION ENROLMENTS 2020 Enrolments places are filling up quickly. If you have a child who will be starting school next year it is really important to complete the enrolment forms to ensure your child has a placement at Glenroy Central PS next year. Enrolments close on August 1st 2019. Our school zone: The Departments new website findmyschool.vic.gov.au hosts the most up-to-date information about Victorian Government school zones. Information on this site is updated in Term 1 every year. It clearly indicates the zone for each government school. You just type your address in, click primary, secondary or specialist and it will show you the zone for your local school. To visit the site, see www.findmyschool.vic.gov.au

We are a Child Safe School.
