March 13, 2018 Hello Fellow SMC Gentlemen! Wow, it’s March already! Time flies when you are having fun and we are having a blast at our Club. We have a number of great activities planned this spring so stay tuned for more details on those. I am happy to report that as a result of the dedi- cated people we have in our Club, we are not only having a great time but we are also financially stable. One of those dedicated members is Dave Buckley. As our Treasurer, he does a fantastic job at keeping us solvent and keeping us informed. Together with his assistant Willie Wyatt, club members are staying on top of dues, and we are paying our debts timely. With close to 600 members to keep track of, well you can only imagine the challenges faced through- out the year. Taking money in, and cutting checks means Dave is constantly engaged and working on our behalf. Dave brings a level of professionalism to our Club that we all can be proud of. He leaves no stone unturned and he promotes transparency. He knows all aspects of the Club and works well with the myriad different personalities. He takes every aspect of his job seriously. In fact, as I see him operate, I be- come more and more impressed. We are so lucky to have a person like Dave in our Club. When you notice someone like Dave Buckley pitching in and giving their time to the Club, thank them. It’s because of them that we enjoy some of the benefits of the Senior Men’s Club of Grosse Pointe. Bring a friend to the next meeting. Share our Club with them. We are all proud of what we have and the SMC is more than happy to have them as our guest. SMC Bowling News

The Bowling League started in 1970. We don't know much about its history, but a member named Edward C. Roney who played tennis at the Grosse Pointe Indoor Tennis Club donated a plaque that names all the members of each championship team of the past 47 years. He died on April 28, 2011 at the age of 97, a victim of Alzheimers disease. He was a Life Member of the SMC and resided in Grosse Pointe Farms, Gaylord, and Scottsdale. We have just completed 24 weeks of a 31 week season. The second half season is yet to be decided. John Onstwedder's team has a comfortable lead thanks to anchor man Mike Fried's 198 pin aver-age. He leads the league with a high game of 276 and a high series of 665. Thanks to a very generous handicap system, a few teams have a chance to catch them. Our season ends on April 12 with a roll off for the season championship. We will also have dou-bles competition on the same day. Our season ending banquet is planned for Thurs-day, April 26, at the Sports Channel Restaurant. Prize money will be distributed at this event. After that, it's time to get out the golf clubs and tennis racquets. Bob Vogler, 882-9636

SMC Golf News It's Time to Sign Up!

Registration is now open for membership in the Senior Men’s Club of Grosse Pointe Golf League for the 2018 golf season. The cost of membership in the league remains at $45, the same as last year. We request that you remit this fee by March 31st , if possible.

Your $45 check should be made payable to the “SMC Golf League” and sent to Mark Jahnke, 7 Fairlake Lane, Grosse Pointe Shores, MI 48236.

Our season will run from Monday, April 23, 2018 through Friday, September 21, 2018. Our annual golf banquet is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018.

As a reminder, our Opening Day breakfast and golf are scheduled to take place on April 23rd at the St. Clair Shores Country Club, 22185 Masonic Blvd., St. Clair Shores, MI 48082. We will begin gathering at 7:30 am, breakfast will be served at 8:00 am and tee times starting at 9:00 am. The cost of the breakfast is $10, to be paid at the breakfast and is separate from the $45 Golf League member-ship fee. Greens fees will be $25 on opening day for 18 holes with cart payable to the golf course. Please schedule your tee times in the pro shop when you arrive at the course since there is no shotgun start.

IMPORTANT: On January 9, 2018, the Senior Men’s Club of Grosse Pointe Board approved a mo-tion requiring all members of the SMC Sub Clubs to be members of the SMC. As a result, you must join the SMC in order to participate in the 2018 SMC Golf League. Your Golf Committee sincerely hopes that all participants in the 2017 golf league return to the league for the 2018 season and that the new requirement does not dissuade you from mem-bership in the golf league (FYI you do not need to be a resident of Grosse Pointe to join the SMC). As an incentive to join the SMC, the Board has agreed to waive the usual $25 one-time initiation fee and reduce the annual $35 annual dues to $20 for the balance of 2018. In other words, someone who is

not currently a member of the SMC can join for $20 rather than $60. Starting in October 2018, dues will be $35 per year for all SMC members. Again, the Golf Committee hopes that all members of the golf league from 2017 return for the 2018 season. A membership application for the SMC can be found in the monthly SMC newsletter and will also be at-tached to an e-mail of this article that will be sent to everyone who participated in the 2017 golf league. The completed application along with a check for $20 payable to the SMC of Grosse Pointe should be forwarded to Mark Jahnke, 7 Fairlake Lane, Grosse Pointe Shores, MI 48236 or to the SMC Membership Chairperson, Grosse Pointe War Memorial, 32 Lakeshore Rd., Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236-3726 Information relative to the many activities and benefits of membership in the SMC of Grosse Pointe can be found at www.https://seniormensclubofgrossepointe.com.

As the days on the calendar click down towards Spring, warmer temperatures and green grass, we hope to see a large turnout for the opening day of the 2018 SMC Golf League. Please pass the word about our league to others who may have an interest in the great game of golf and encourage them to join the league and experience the camaraderie, compe-tition and fun that membership in the league...and the SMC... provides! resume tutoring again elsewhere. Their three children — their youngest, John, passed away from pancreatic cancer — and six grand-children occupy “a great deal of our time,” Ed Benz said. “We are so lucky and so blessed,” Fran Benz said. “Life is not easy. Some times, it’s hard to get out of bed in the morning, but the years go by very fast, so carpe diem.” Added Ed Benz, “Bloom where you’re planted. If you’ve been given gifts, don’t put your light under a basket. Keep your head straight and rise above.” Reprinted from the Grosse Pointe News

Life continues to be an adventure for City of Grosse Pointe residents Ed and Fran Benz. The two met on the SS South American, a Great Lakes steamer. He was a busboy and bellhop while he worked his way through school, then after serv-ing in the U.S. Army, he returned and served as a bartender. “Every year a nurse would do medical records and draw blood,” Ed Benz said. “That was Fran.” They met in the dining room and argued about Ayn Rand, Fran Benz said. It was the start of a long-lasting and eventful relationship. After they married, they applied to the Peace Corps and were ready to head to North Borneo, “but that was the week we found out I was pregnant with Brian,” Fran Benz said, so they were unable to go. “Three years later we found out about Extension Lay Volunteers, which is like the Catholic Peace Corps. We spent a year (in Rowena, Texas).” They also had a third child in Rowena, Lizzie, who fol-lowed her sister, Bridget. “When we were young, we just functioned. We didn’t think much,” Fran Benz said. When they returned to Michigan, Ed Benz taught at several schools while finishing his master’s degree at University of Detroit. “The same month I graduated, our fourth child (John) was born,” he said. He began substitute teaching in Detroit before eventually landing a full-time gig at Cass Technical High School, where he worked for 22 years until retiring early due to health problems. “Then I began visiting prisoners one on one with a church program, speaking with people who were stressed out in jail,” Ed Benz said. His Wayne County Jail visits led to a job teaching inmates to prepare for their GEDs. He’s still in contact with a few teachers and even a couple former students, he said. “Ed is a wonderful mentor,” Fran Benz said. After the jail job was discontinued by then-Gov. John Engler, Ed Benz resumed substitute teaching, which he did until age 79. During their marriage, Fran Benz worked as a registered nurse for 22 years at Beaumont Hospital.

She continues to volunteer in the hospital’s Spiritual Care Department. She was awarded for her work with a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses at age 79.

The couple, who’ve been married 56 years and have been active members at St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church, have run a married couples spirituality group 53 years. “It’s the largest couples group in the Catho-lic Church no one’s ever heard of,” Fran Benz said.Added her husband, “We were the first one in Detroit. Now there are more than 30 in the metro area.” The Benzes have also fostered four children and 37 years ago started the Chili and Cheer block party dur-ing the holidays — a tradition that continues in their City neighborhood. They are avid sailors and traveled on a replica tall ship that had been used in the film “Mutiny on the Bounty,” from Toronto to Sault Ste. Marie. “We love sailing,” Ed Benz said. “Our first date was on a sail-boat. … I kind of knew what I was doing.” “But not really,” Fran quickly added. They’ve owned a series of boats, including a tri-maran they raced in three Mackinac races. They also sailed from Fort Lauderdale to the Bahamas, where they spent a month. Ed Benz, 84, is an active committee member of the Senior Men’s Club of Grosse Pointe and participates in Detroit Rowing Club competitions. “I enjoy it and it motivates me to stay in shape,” he said. Both have been members at L.A. Fitness more than 35 years. Seven years ago, they “walked the Camino,” starting in Spain and walking 125 miles with backpacks to Santiago de Compostela in Portugal. “It’s an amazing religious experience,” said Fran, 86. “In Europe, it’s the thing to do.” The couple spent a month as mis-sionaries in Africa with friends, Bud and Sue Ozar. Ed Benz taught while Fran Benz offered nursing. The Benzes also are avid skiers and noted they skied on their honeymoon. "We ski almost every year,” Ed Benz said. “We are blessed to be able to be active. We try to stay that way by getting exercise three times a week.” In addition to exercise, the Benzes support Detroit Repertory Theatre and Stratford Festival, as well as visit friends almost every day, for wellness checks and to give marital advice. Ed Benz, who formerly tutored at Detroit Literacy Center, hopes to

The Reading List The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Paulo Coelho was born into a strict, middle-class Catholic family in Brazil in 1947. As a teenager, he was rebellious, and his family had him committed to a mental institution three times. Although he wanted to become a writer, he gave it up to please his parents and enrolled in law school, only to later drop out and become a hippie, travelling extensively and using drugs. When he returned to Brazil he worked as a song writer as well as an actor and journalist. He was jailed by the military government because of his subversive lyrics. In 1986 Coelho made the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain and had a spiri-tual awakening. He gave up his songwriting career and began writing, publishing The Pilgrimage in 1987. During a two-week period in 1987, Coelho wrote The Alchemist, the first of his books that became successful. The Alchemist started selling slowly, but sales built through word of mouth, and by the 1990s, it had become a best seller in many countries. By 2015, Coelho had written 30 books, had sold more than 210 million copies in over 170 countries, and his works had been translated into 81 languages. Today he lives in Geneva, Switzer-land and continues to write.

The Alchemist is a fable that tells the story of Santiago, a young shepherd from Andalusia who dreams of finding a treasure near the Egyptian pyramids. The author uses the story of Santiago’s search for his treasure to show the importance of following our dreams. Santiago must overcome various trials, including being robbed twice, be-ing captured by warring tribesmen, being beaten, and crossing the endless desert. He meets color-ful characters on his quest, all of whom give him

advice, including a Gypsy fortune teller, a king, a shopkeeper, a well-read Englishman, a beautiful girl at an oasis, and finally the alchemist, who ap-pears in the desert riding a horse with a falcon on his shoulder. Santiago perseveres, overcomes his doubts and fears, and learns to listen to his heart. The author sprinkles his philosophy throughout, particularly in the words of the alchemist: “People need not fear the unknown if they are capable of achieving what they need and want. We are afraid of losing what we have, whether it’s our life or our possessions and property. But this fear evaporates when we understand that our life stories and the history of the world were written by the same Hand.”

One of Coelho’s most famous quotes is “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” This kind of self-help encouragement has made The Alchemist popular with young people around the world, but many critics, especially in the US, have been unkind to the work. Most of the Readers sided with the crit-ics and got little enjoyment or inspiration from the book. Parts of it, such as the conversations between Santiago and the wind and the sun struck us as silly. Some of us did think, however, that we might recommend it as a young adult book.

The Readers recently met to select our books for the rest of 2018. Our new book list can be found on the Senior Men’s Club webpage under Sub Clubs-The Readers, as well as on page 8 of this Newsletter. . If you would like a copy sent to you, contact David Morrow at 313-640-9756 or Jack Cobau at 313-885-1650.

Join us on March 20th at 5 pm for our discus-sion of The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah. We will meet at the home of Fred Whitehouse at 1265 Blairmoor Ct, Grosse Pointe Woods. RSVP to (313) 884-1324.
