Every Monday , four teams com-peted against other teams and the top 64 teams with highest scores knock each other out in term 3. RYLANDS HIGH TEAMS

It is also very efficient as the messages are received in real-time. The statistics on the right shows the percentage number of parents using the app. We urge all parents to register as it will

be the only future means of communication.

Rylands High Grade 8’s make History at the UCT Mathematics Olympiad

Page 3

Grade 8D boys Ismaa’eel Ahmed and Mi-hirkumar Palsania , made history by becoming the first grade 8 to achieve first position at the UCT Mathematics Challenge pairs category , held at the prestigious UCT on the 8th of June. These two boys , both formerly from Rylands Primary, were amongst the 75 learners who were entered by Rylands High for this competition, they won Gold ahead of the pairs from Reddam House Constantia and Internation-al School of Cape Town, who were runners up, and then followed by other 175 schools. From the Rylands team , an additional 7 leaners received merit certificates. Recipients were Masooda Olday 9A, Vishal Bhoodia 10B, Mariam Khan 11A, Brian Mvukwe 12B, Tasin Ul Islam 12A , Ki-yaan Patton 12B and Imtiyaaz Matthews 12B. The rest of the learners who entered re-ceived certificates of participation. We encourage more learners to enter the Mathematics Olym-

piad next year.

We pray for you Aqeel

It was sad to discover that one of our Grade 11 pupils, Aqeel Hope was diagnosed with cancer. The friendly, funny student had touched many hearts. His classmates and friends had felt the need

to do something meaningful for Aqeel.

Together with Mrs Davids ,they organised a Khatamal Quran (spiritual prayer) praying for his health and strength. The Khatamal Quran was held at our school in the Salaah room. Aqeel was emo-tionally touched and grateful for the meaningful effort and even though it was a time for prayer there was lots of room for laughter and joy. The experience was overwhelming for Aqeel and his fellow classmates. It was a special time because he now knows that he does not only have the support of his friends, teachers, and whole of

Rylands High as well.

To Aqeel:

May Allah Grant you all the health and strength and May Allah ac-cept all Duas upon you, We Miss

you dearly. His classmates made the above artwork for him.

Message from the RCL Page 4

ANTI-BULLYING CAMPAIGN

This term the RCL ran a campaign that called for every role player at Rylands High to unite against

bullying. Many of us do not realize that bullying is a form of oppression. Dur-

ing our assembly presentations,

we conveyed to everyone what

bullying truly means and why

people take it lightly. Our mem-

bers had performed different

pieces, such as an instrumental

and spoken work poetry to cap-

ture everyone's attention.

Our closing statement for the

campaign was an oath that instructed each learner to:

•treat others respectfully

•refuse to oppress others or be a bystander of an

act of bullying

•inform the correct role players

And several more duties that each class had to commit

to.

Simply because our campaign has ended does not mean

we are putting the values of respect, compassion and

understanding among others, aside. We pray that every

single Rylander carries these values with them throughout life and that our efforts will be of im-

mense value.

Our upcoming campaigns include : Anti-Drug and Self Love campaigns. We look forward to

working closely with everyone in the terms to follow.

Your RCL Chairperson, Mariam Khan

Message from the Head Girl As the matric year nearly comes to a close, we would like to take the opportunity to wish all our

peers well over the upcoming break. We would also like to

thank the prefects who assisted us, worked eagerly together

and for their sterling work throughout the term.

We aimed at preparing our prefects with skills that were not

necessarily taught in the classroom. We provided them with

discipline and order, and helped shape their leadership potential.

With these skills, the prefects assisted in leading and managing

the rest of the learners at Rylands High School, conveying the

order and discipline on to them. While the changes were small,

we as Rylanders could see these changes, as we are faced with

issues every day.

We commend the prefects once again and pray that they carry

with them what they have learnt.

Life Sciences Excursion to the Heart Museum Life Science is fun. It is not confined to classroom walls or labs. Our Grade 11 Life Sciences learn-

ers were taken on a tour of the Morphology Museum. It was breath-taking to see real life-size lungs, all body organs, embryos, skel-

etons and all. Those not taking this subject must think again. Our Grade 10 learners also flew out to the Heart Museum. Did you know that: 1) Your heart is the size of your fist. 2) South Africa did the first successful heart transplant in the whole world. Ask any Grade 10 LS learner anything about the heart and they will pour their hearts out to you. Hats off to Mr Ngwen-

ya, Mr Waglay, Miss Edries and Miss Jardien, who organised the excursion.

STAFF NEWS... Page 8

We celebrate Aunty Marie’s 60th Birthday!! This year marks a momentous occasion. Aunty Marie is the foundation on which Rylands High school is built. She celebrates her 60th birthday. Aunty Marie has been the corner stone of Rylands High for 25 years. She is one of the strongest and kindest mothers of Rylands High School. No one can fault her dedication to our school as her incredible work ethic is only surpassed by her amazing personality and kind heart. Aunty Marie can always be seen help-ing both staff and learners with every request and every need. She is loved by all. On her special day she was brought to tears during the singing of her birthday song. We wish her a happy birthday once again and hope that she

spends many more birthdays with her Rylands High School family.

Ms. M Jardien Will not be joining us next term as she has gone on maternity leave. We

wish her well with her bundle of joy.

Mr Adams completes the Comrades Marathon We congratulate Mr Adams who completed his second Comrades Marathon

ADLI PECK : PHD Chemical Engi-

neering

On Monday the 16th of April, Rylands host-

ed a young man by the name of Adli Peck

who conveyed his story and tips on how to

improve yourself. Adli is an ex-Rylander

who matriculated in 2008, and went on to

study Physics at the University of Stellen-

bosch. After attaining his master's in Physics,

Adli moved on the University of Cape

Town, where he is currently completing his PhD in Chemical Engineering, which is

sponsored by SASOL.

Adli's tips included the following:

•Make mistakes, but learn from them;

•Speak to people with experience; and

•Be your own worst critic, but your own biggest supporter at the same

time.

Adli Peck, as well as Nazeem Baartman, who is mentioned elsewhere in this newsletter

by Mr Adams, are living proof that great success is able to come from Rylands High!

We wish them all the success, and hope that our current Rylanders are inspired by

their stories. Mariam Khan

mate Winner of the BOBD. In second place is

Rylands high and in third Spine Road High. Special

Congratulations to Rylands, Malibu and Settlers for

entering the Top 10 for the first time!

MOTIVATION PAGE: Nazeem Bartman-Soccer Star Page 10

Nazeem Bartman started his jour-ney at Rylands High School in 2008. A very respectful and hard working boy. It would only be later on when RHS would find out just how talent-ed and disciplined "Ziemo" would

be. Nazeem had always sat right in front of the classroom hanging on the word of every teacher. I believe that is a testimony to Mr & Mrs Bartman who made sure that this boy was never an embarrassment to the family name. The start of the school year is filled with excitement and the Inter-School Athletics meeting. It was here where we saw how fast he was. He put everything into training, often

being present first and assisting peers to improve themselves.

Ziemo was involved at Ajax CT Football club and Old Mutual Football Academy. It was dur-ing his stay at OMFA when I saw the true po-tential of this young man. At Mutual, the coaching staff had former Bafana Bafana play-ers and these gentlemen were impressed with Nazeem from the beginning. Ziemo didn't stay at Mutual nor Rylands HS for much long-er. After a very successful Engen and Bayhill tournament, he was scouted by Supersport FC in Johannesburg. Nazeem left Cape Town

during his Grade 11 year and it would be a sign of big things to come for him. From Supersport Nazeem attended Tyler Junior College in Texas, while in an aca-demic programme he played for the Tyler Apache, from 2013-2014 making 39 ap-pearances and scoring a whopping 33 goals during that brief period. From College Football he then went to the University of South Florida for the 2015-2016 football season scoring 14 goals in 37 appearances for the South Florida Bulls. After gradu-ating from University , Nazeem was snapped up by the Vancouver Whitecaps in the 4th round of the football draft. He was the 73rd player bought by one of the Major

Soccer League teams in North American football. That is indeed a big deal. While his football career was reaching new heights Nazeem like many other Cape Town boys would miss home and his family. As a young Muslim man away from home and family he would often turn to prayer to get him through many tough pe-riods in his young life. As always, the Man above shows Mercy and Grace when we need it most. Ziemo's career flourished and a young lady stole his heart. Eventually the two of them got married. . His desire to get out of Bonteheuwel, to take his family to America and most importantly be close to his mum and dad. Before his

last visit to Cape Town, Nazeem had not seen his mother for four years. He wasn't afraid to make the move overseas and he also made the point of coming back to Rylands High to have a word with our learners. We wish Ziemo all the best in his football career and we were glad to see him come back to the very spot

where he often played football to give a motivational talk to our school. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKHAVtjjyUk Mr Adams
