The Biennial Conference for the Alliance of Girls’ Schools of Australasia was held in Adelaide this week. This event brings together educators from all sectors who have a passion for single sex schooling for girls, and the list of speakers this year was very impressive. We discussed many of the challenges facing girls in the digital age, and shared ideas around how schools and families can work together effectively to educate Fearless Girls, Strong Women. We came back to school excited about working together to tackle some of the challenges girls face in the online world during their secondary schooling and beyond.

Interstate and overseas delegates from the Alliance Conference visited the College on Tuesday. We chose to highlight the ways in which we harness student voice and educate for empathy through our Justice and Mercy activities. Clare Peterson, Student Social Justice Coordinator, coordinated the session and I can honestly say that any student, parent or staff member who attended would have been filled with pride by the students’ presentation. Their capacity to articulate our Mercy values and how they shape this community was inspirational and many school leaders left with new ideas about engaging and empowering their students.

The Empower exhibition in the school foyer has brought together photographs and works of art that embody our school values and bring them to life in new ways. Reading the artists’ statements alongside the works gives an insight into what matters most to us, and it has been great to see so many people stopping to appreciate the work of others. Our thanks go to Michelle Barratt, Art Coordinator, who curated the exhibition, and to all the members of the community who contributed their images and ideas.

Google recently conducted research on its employees to determine the skills that are strong predictors of workplace success. Many were surprised that specific subject knowledge was well down the list, following characteristics like good communication and listening skills; insight into others and valuing diversity; having empathy toward and being supportive of colleagues; critical thinking and making connections across complex ideas. These characteristics develop both within and beyond the classroom, and are enhanced by participation in activities like the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, student leadership programs and the Justice and Mercy group, as well as many more sport and extra-curricular programs available to students. Increased awareness of how these characteristics lead to success beyond school means that employers are seeking new ways to look beyond the ATAR and university qualifications in

their selection processes. Our students are well placed to stand out through the breadth of their experiences throughout their education.

We were deeply saddened to hear of the death of Archbishop Leonard Faulkner last Sunday. A great supporter of the College, we found a lovely photo of a very young Father Faulkner (as he was then) in the 1960 Annual. He always greeted people with a warm welcome, both as Chaplain of the College and as Archbishop of Adelaide. Students and staff will attend his funeral Mass on Monday at the Cathedral. I share with you here a prayer that Archbishop Faulkner prayed each day.

The Prayer Radiating Christ Dear Jesus, help me to spread Your fragrance everywhere I go.

Flood my soul with Your spirit and life.

Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly that all my life may only be a radiance of Yours.

Shine through me and be so in me that every soul I come in contact with may feel Your presence in my soul.

Let them look up and see no longer me but only Jesus!

Stay with me and then I shall begin to shine as You shine, so to shine as to be a light to others; the light, O Jesus, will be all from You; none of it will be mine: it will be You shining on others through me.

Let me thus praise You in the way You love best: by shining on those around me.

Let me preach You without preaching, not by words, but by my example, by the catching force, the sympathetic influence of what I do, the evident fullness of the love my heart bears to You.

A prayer prayed daily by Emeritus Archbishop Leonard Faulkner

CONTINUING CAPABILITY TO LOVE

Last term, SAC students came together to create a ‘Mercy’ coin line in the courtyard. We raised over $440 for Zaidi Ya Dreams, an orphanage in Kenya, which burnt down in February due to an electrical fire. Our funds and support are going towards the rebuilding of the orphanage. And even though only a small sentiment, the coin line is one which embodies our humanity, and the continuing capability we all have to love.

PE CENTRAL

As part of the year 11 Physical Education Semester 1 Curriculum, the Year 11 PE students are taking part in an eight week Squash practical. Every week we travel to West Adelaide Squash Centre and learn different skills and rules of Squash. The girls are loving the different environment and trying a sport that most of them have never done before. Some of the techniques and tactics are challenging but they are doing a great job! I’m looking forward to seeing their skills continuing to improve over the remaining five weeks.

Thanks to all Primary students and their families for their wonderful efforts weekly on Waste Free Wednesdays. We all want to do our bit for the environment, don’t we? It’s the little things that make a big difference, and by cutting out disposable rubbish in our lunch-boxes every day, we can reduce our waste considerably.

What to include in a litter-free lunch?Food that’s perfect for a litter-free lunch includes:• Fresh fruit• Dried fruit• Vegetables• Sandwiches• Meals you’ve cooked or bought• Individual treats

This kind of lunch isn’t just about the food, it’s also about reusable containers and cutlery.

Be sure to use:• Reusable forks and spoons • Reusable food and drink containers

Here are some ‘nude food’ ideas for what can go in your ‘waste free’ lunch boxes:1. ‘Cute’ vegetables: cherry tomatoes, baby cucumbers, baby

corn, raw green beans, snow peas, raw asparagus spears, mushrooms, broccoli and cauliflower tips.

1. Edible wraps: dolmades, sushi, coleslaw and baby corn wrapped in a cabbage or lettuce leaf secured with string, or shredded veggies tucked up inside a rice paper wrap.

2. Hunky veggies: cooked jacket potato, pumpkin, sweet potato or washed raw baby carrot or even cooked corn re-wrapped in the original leaves which can be tied on with string or secured with a toothpick. The veggies can be cooked and cooled the night before ready for the morning lunch box rush.

3. Fruits: apples, pears, mandarins, oranges, banana, grapes, cherries, berries and kiwi fruit.

4. Protein power-houses: eggs (pre-boiled and ready-to-go), cheese cubes or yoghurt in a reusable container.

5. Instead of buying single serve packaged items, which come with their own disposable packaging, buy foods in bulk packs. Repack the contents into mini-serves.

6. Avoid single serve juice packs and water bottles. Get a leak-proof refillable bottle. Fill with water (Tap is best!).

7. Take home the scraps to feed to the chickens, worms or place in the compost heap or the recycling bin.

There are huge benefits to ‘waste-free’ and ‘low-waste’ lunches for our environment and health. • There will be less waste being generated and sent to landfill

and less energy used on disposal.• It’s cheaper to buy foods in bulk and pack them in reusable

containers• You will have a healthier lunch with less pre-packaged snack

foods and more fresh food We will also have a cleaner school!

Thanks for your support with this!

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN PARLIAMENT HOUSE VISIT

As part of our History unit on Australian Federation and Government, all Year 6 classes visited the South Australian Parliament House on North Terrace. Our tour guide was Natalie Young, who is the Community Education Officer at Parliament House and as we discovered, a former SAC student. When we arrived we were taken into the House of Assembly (the Lower House in State Parliament) where Natalie explained to us the history of the chamber, the role it has in State Parliament and the responsibilities of the members of the government, opposition and minor parties. She also discussed the three levels of government. Natalie provided us with a comprehensive understanding of the process through which a bill becomes an Act of Parliament.

We were then taken to the Legislative Council (the Upper House), here we discovered that this is the place where a bill is debated, reviewed and possibly approved to then be sent on to the Governor for signing. Whilst in the chambers, were able to participate in our own version of a parliamentary debate. Our students were enthusiastic and passionate about the roles they had as members of Parliament. Some of them even had the opportunity to sit in the Speaker’s chair! The students found this excursion to be a wonderful and enriching learning experience which developed their knowledge of the role and effectiveness of government in our country. The classes would like to say a huge thank you to our parent volunteers. We know that without their support on the day our excursion wouldn’t have been possible.

EXCITING & EXHILARATING ADVENTURESOn Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 April, the Year 5 students attended El Shaddai at Wellington for the Year 5 camp. The weather was perfect for our outdoor activities and the camp provided the girls with a wonderful opportunity to strengthen relationships, engage in collaborative team building and utilise their problem solving skills. Over two days, the four classes participated in a range of exciting and exhilarating adventures which included: rock climbing, vertical climbing, archery, laser skirmish, swimming, the giant swing, canoeing and raft making. Other highlights of the camp included the trampoline, the flying fox, movie night and free time at the camp site utilising the recreation facilities. The girls had an overwhelmingly positive response to the camp. Many students formed some new friendships and enjoyed the opportunity of getting to know their peers beyond the classroom.

STUDENTS’ REFLECTIONS

What made Year 5 Camp such an exciting, positive and enjoyable experience for me, was teamwork and friendship. I learned about teamwork and it was really nice to hear my teammates support me in everything. The most important thing that everyone learned was about friendship and trust. It was great at El Shaddai! Maimouna Sangary 5JA

The Year 5’s went on camp to El Shaddai. It was a great experience! All the instructors were kind, and one in particular was quite funny. There were eight activities such as canoeing, laser skirmish, giant swings and more. My favourite activity was laser skirmish. Canoeing was also something that I found fun. While my partner and I were canoeing in the river, we accidentally went near the middle. The speed boat had to get us out and then drop us near the front. I went to paddle my canoe, but I forgot how to do it! Ellena Lay 5JA

YEAR 8 DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

Lego Mindstorms EV3 robots operate using a programmable brick with LEGO. Students can build and then program their robot using their Surface Pro. Year 8 Digital Technology students have been exploring the functions of the robots through a range of challenge tasks. What made their tasks even more challenging, is that the instruction manuals were removed, so they had to work out the features and the block codes themselves! From a teacher’s perspective, students had several failures. They experienced frustration when an algorithm didn’t work, and their robot went ‘hay wire’. However, after persisting and when students experienced success, the excitement in the room was contagious. Heads would turn, and students would gather to observe peers’ success.

PROGRAMMING USING MINDSTORM EV3 ROBOTS

STUDENTS’ REFLECTIONS

Working with the robots using the Lego Mindstorms program has been challenging and fun! Working with my peers to get the robots travelling in a simple square took far too much time but was very rewarding. Doing this has let me work with people who have different views and ideas to doing one thing in many different ways which made achieving the square more fun! We tried rotations then degrees to get the robot turning accurately and found success both ways after taking into account measurements, surfaces, speed and angles. Cadence Lopresti-Zotti 8MB

As a class, 9NW were asked to create a banner to commemorate ANZAC day for the Semaphore RSL. We all contributed by brainstorming ideas and our individual opinions for the design of the banner. Subsequently, Brooke Brant took all of our ideas and sketched the images on the banner. When this was completed and approved by the whole class, a small group of volunteer painters: Gabriella Abraham, Brooke Brant, Imogen Fitzgerald, Zara Molloy, Fatema Momenzada, Fatima Rasuli, Hannah Shaw and Sadia Yosufi set about painting the images. As a class, 9NW enjoyed the experience of collaborating for a common project and having our final piece on display for the public on Anzac Day. UNDERSTANDING ROAD SAFETY

On Monday 7 May, Reception students visited the Road Safety Centre located at the Thebarton Police barracks. Through an instructional session with a police officer and practical experience on the simulated roadway, students further developed their understanding of road safety rules and behaviours.

There are many people in our community who are working to make the world a better place. Who are the people working to help others, reach out to people on the margins, promote social justice issues and create a better future for everyone?

It might be an inspirational teacher or student at the school. It could be an influential sporting coach. It could be a local politician, or a worker for a community organisation, or someone else who is doing inspiring work for others.

Find a Justice Hero who inspires you, conduct and interview and write up their story for the chance to win cash and great prizes.

DONATIONS NEEDED!The cold weather is officially here! While for most of us that means getting out our favourite woolly socks and jumpers from last Winter, Adelaide’s homeless population needs our help.

Please donate any pre-loved sleeping bags, jumpers, jackets, socks, blankets, scarves and beanies to help support those sleeping rough and cold this coming winter. There is a box in the SAC front office for donations which will be sent to the Adelaide Day Centre.

Many thanks.
