Term 3 is our ‘adventure’ term which sees students, parents and staff heading out and exploring our Territory, country and even the world. More than half the students at the College will head off to participate in the outdoor education, camping or missions programs this term.

• Year 3/4 – Riyala• Year 5/6 – Kakadu• Year 7 – Katherine• Year8–Litchfield• Year 9 – Larapinta (Term 2)• Year 10 Trip – Darwin – Adelaide – Canberra – Sydney – Central Queensland – Darwin• Outdoor Ed – Jatbula Trail (Katherine Gorge to Edith Falls) • Mission Trip – India

None of these events happen without a tremendous amount of time and effort from teachers who in turn are supported by a host of parents, who together make these events happen for students. Oftenduringtherampuptowardacamp, astheorganisersfindthemselvesinthethickofalltheorganisational complexities of camp preparation, the question of “Why?” is often asked - and what a great question to ask! So, why do we bother to go to all the effort and expense of running camps and trips?

Well, depending on who you ask, the answer varies. One of the most important reasons I believe only comes to fruition well after the excitement of the camp has faded and the gear is cleaned and packed away. It is not easily measured, but teachers know it when they see it. We place such value on this that we as a community continue to run one of the most ambitious camping and outdoor education programmes in Darwin.

The fruit that I am talking about is the strengthening of relationships. In simple terms - students return from camp stronger relationally than when they left. Camps allow for students, teachers and some lucky parents to get to know each other in ways that are not possible in the normal hustle and bustle of school life.

Strengthened relationships enable us as a community to work together at a deeper level. Increased care, trust, respect and generosity are just some of the changes seen in students. These changes allow students and teachers to talk, share and support each other better, which not only improves learning, faith development and personal growth, but is invaluable when things get tough and hard conversations need to be had.

My prayer is that as students experience their camp, they will be open to letting it grow and shape them. That they will take hold of the opportunities presented to help them take another step in their journeytofindingtheirplaceinGod'sworld.Thattheywilllearnthattheydonotneedtodothisalone and that they are in fact surrounded by many people who genuinely care about them. I also want to thank every person who has helped make these camps and trips happen. I know just how much time and effort you put in. Thank you each and every one of you, and don’t forget to have some fun along the way too.

Blessings,

Mr Andrew Manning - Principal

Cross Country

What a perfect morning for a run! Beautiful and cool… A fantastic turn out of parents to support the children and so many records smashed! Well done to all those who participated by running or walking the course and a big THANK YOU to staff who helped run the event. See 2017 Cross Country Champions on the next page.

Athletics Cluster Days

Of the three Athletics Cluster Days for the Darwin region, Marrara Primary competed on the Thursday. Excitement was in the air as students arrived to represent MCC in the sports they loved. They slogged it out in the hot sun, trying their best and encouraging each other. Other schools and parents were also impressed with the way they cheered competitors on. After a long day, the winners for the Handicap award went to…. MCC! And the winners for the day overall went to… MCC! Well done team, and a particular acknowledgment of these standout performers:

John Ojo (Year 5), Tobias Jenner (Year 5), Khaden Mallett (Year 6) and Hannah Nawirridj (Year 5) have all been selected for the Darwin Region Track & Field Team.

Khaden now holds the record in Discus 12/13 year boys. John Ojo now holds the record in 200m 10 year boys and Hannah now holds the record in 200m 10 year girls.
