From The Principal (continued)

This week we launched the St Aloysius College Taste of Harmony Cookbook. The book brings together recipes from students, staff and families of the College and is on sale at the SAC Office. I would like to acknowledge the staff whose creativity and hard work made this project possible, as well as all the students and families who contributed recipes and stories. Special thanks must go to Ms Alexandra Gonzalez Salas and Ms Mary Kotsionis whose labour of love has been a great gift to this community.

The musical talent of students of all ages was on show at the Spring Concert at the Royalty Theatre this week. From a dynamic Drum Corps performance to some show-stoppers from this year’s production of 'Oliver!', the evening was enjoyed by all in attendance. The Rock Band recently played at Club 5082 in the Prospect Town Hall and they showed how much they have come together as a group throughout the year. Next week many of our Year 6 and 7 students will be on stage at the Entertainment Centre for the Catholic Schools Music Festival. We thank our Music staff for the range of opportunities they provide for students to perform - it gives each student and ensemble something to work towards and gives us the chance to celebrate their development as performers.

All staff engaged in a professional learning day last Friday led by Reverend Professor Denis Edwards, a renowned theologian, who focused on the papal encyclical, Laudato Si.’ He linked the theology underpinning Laudato Si’ to social justice and ecology, as well as inviting us to think about how we can realise ecological conversion in our school. In keeping with the theme for the day, following Fr Denis’ presentation we celebrated the beauty of the natural world with a shared lunch in the Botanic Gardens.

One of the quotes that has stayed with me from our day of reflection is, “Every creature is thus the object of the Father’s tenderness, who gives it its place in the world.” Laudato Si’ (77) I was reminded of the 27 students who made their Sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist last week. At these special moments, we recognise the Father’s tenderness made visible in the lives of children and we celebrate their place in the world.

MUSIC NEWSElder Conservatorium ConcertAs part of the Music co-curricular program, the SAC Orchestra members attended a performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons by the Elder Conservatorium Chamber Orchestra at the Elder Conservatorium of Music. The concert was held on Friday 1 September 2017, a fitting day as the violin concerti begins with ‘Spring’.This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience the thrill of a live orchestral performance and it definitely enthused our girls.

Duke of Edinburgh’s International Gold Award CeremonyThe St Aloysius College Senior Strings Ensemble was invited to perform incidental music at the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Gold Award Ceremony on Tuesday 29 August 2017 at Government House. We were all very impressed with the opulence of Government House and had the privilege of meeting the Governor of South Australia, His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC. The girls performed beautifully under the direction of Ms Sonia Treagus and look forward to forthcoming performances at the Catholic Women’s League event and Spring Concert.

Senior String Ensemble PerformanceSelected members of the Senior String Ensemble entertained guests at the recent SA Catholic Women’s League 48th National Biennial Conference. Attendees were delighted with their performance. Well done!

SPRING CONCERT 2017This year’s Term 3 Spring Concert was held at the Royalty Theatre on Tuesday 12 September, highlighting the dedication of our students, Music tutors and ensemble directors. The concert featured the talents of the Orchestra, Drum Corps, Stage Band, Rock Band, Senior Choir, Catch 22, Primary Choir, Junior String Ensemble, Senior String Ensemble, Flute Ensemble and the Middle School Concert Band. The concert also featured vocal performances from the school production of ‘Oliver!’ held earlier in the term. Siobhan Reardon, Grace Carter, Madeleine Homes-Vickers, Holly George and Emily Crocker performed the moving piece 'Who Will Buy' and Jessica Veri sang a heart-wrenching rendition of “As Long As He Needs Me’. Stage 2 Music student soloists, vocalist Nicole Fernandez and pianist Briana Cianciosi had the opportunity to perform to a packed audience to gain performance experience. The Primary Music Leaders, Adie Patrick and Emily Crocker and Senior Music leaders, Kate Gate and Nicole Fernandez, compered the evening, doing an outstanding job and adding to the success of the night.I would like to thank the Music staff who assisted in the running of the evening; Mr Craig Evans, Ms Amy Waters and Ms Nicole Wedding. I would also like to thank Music Assistant, Ms Nikki Stedman for helping me orchestrate the concert. Our ensembles would not be ensembles without their wonderful directors to lead them. Thank you to our talented pool of Ensemble directors: Mr Craig Evans, Ms Nicole Wedding, Mr Roger Downton, Ms Sonia Treagus, Ms Melanie Walters, Ms Isabella DeLuca, Ms Chelsea Smart and accompanist, Mr Nick Bennett. We would also like to thank our families and friends. It is through your support that our students are able to pursue their musical endeavours, so thank you for your continuous guidance and encouragement. Finally, a big thank you to the students. I hope this experience perpetuates your passion for music.

YEAR 4 SCIENCE - ROCKS AND MINERALSThis term in Year 4 we have been learning about Science, with a focus on rocks and minerals. Students have had the chance to bring in rocks from their backyards and gardens and have learnt about the ‘rock cycle’ and the three different types of rocks (sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous). The students have been curious and motivated to learn about this topic, so we decided to go on an excursion to the SA Museum and the Unique Opal Mine in the city.

Thank you to our adult helpers who came along to help supervise.

Mr Adrian Sheridan, Ms Nicole Priest, Ms Belinda Skelton & Mr Simon LandiYEAR 4 TEACHERS

Students' Reflections

My two favourite parts of the excursion was when we got to touch a fossilised tree and when we got to see a rock from Mars! Camille Paterson 4NP

I loved going to the Opal Mine and seeing the opalised Plesiosaurus fossil. I also enjoyed going to the museum and looking at all the minerals with our tour guide, Trevor. Chloe Arblaster 4NP

On the excursion we went to the SA museum then went to the opal mine shop. It was so cool. We went in an underground cave and there were real opals in the walls of the cave. They were worth two hundred thousand dollars. Reda Jafari 4NP

It was really fun and I enjoyed it a lot. It was really fascinating too. Eva Dimmell 4SL

I liked our excursion because we learned many new things about rocks and minerals. My favourite mineral was the opal as it had the most beautiful colours in it. Ava Mennillo 4SL

Trevor from the Museum taught us about rocks, minerals and also meteorites. The most interesting thing he told us was that there was a piece of rock that came to Earth from outer space and that piece of rock was from Mars. Ellena Lay 4SL

The Year 4 classes have been learning about rocks and minerals in science so we went on this excursion to learn, explore and experience more. Marina Monydeng 4SL

The thing I liked about the excursion is that we learned about all the rocks and minerals in the world. My favourite rock is the amethyst. Maimouna Sangary 4GB

I liked our excursion to the SA Museum because there were all the rocks, minerals, gems and stones. These are used for making bracelets, necklaces and earrings. Isabella Clark 4GB

I had SO much fun at the museum. We saw tree fossils, meteorites, pieces of Mars, minerals, dinosaur bones and so much more! Emma Fyfe 4GB

SACRAMENTS OF CONFIRMATION & FIRST EUCHARISTThe Sacrament of Confirmation was celebrated on Thursday 31 August at St Francis Xavier Cathedral. Archbishop Philip Wilson confirmed 27 students from Year 4 onwards through the Laying on of Hands and Anointing with the Oil of Chrism supported by Fr Charles Gauci and Ms Paddy McEvoy. The students made sashes with their confirmation names. The school choir, accompanied by Ms Linda Clemente and Mr Craig Evans, added beautiful music and voices to a most reverent occasion. The students and their families celebrated later by receiving certificates and taking photographs to remember their Confirmation. Thank you to all the sponsors, readers and staff who supported the students and their families in our preparations and celebration. On Saturday 2 September 2017 we celebrated the Sacrament of First Eucharist with Fr James McEvoy in St Francis Xavier Cathedral. Families and children were welcomed by the Adelaide Cathedral Parish into the community. The 27 children were very excited and nervous as their months of preparation had finally arrived. This was the first time for our students to receive the body and blood of Christ. It concluded their sacraments of initiation as fully initiated members of the Catholic Church. They were presented with certificates and a memento by Fr James McEvoy, Ms Paddy McEvoy and Ms Kellie Osborn.Thank you to all families, staff and the Adelaide Cathedral Parish for preparing and celebrating with our students. Also, thank you to all those families who donated goods to Catherine House. They were very appreciative of your generous donations.

Receiving the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion was a very special and wonderful time. It was special because I renewed by baptism com-mitment to the Catholic faith and I received the bread and wine for the first time. I was blessed to have all my family and friends supporting me through my sacra-ments and being there for me. Lucie Calabro 4SLI enjoyed celebrating my Sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist with all my friends. I also enjoyed doing the workshop with Mrs Sofia. I had a great time with all my friends. Catalina Requejo-Regal 4GB

On Thursday and Saturday, I celebrated my sacraments with some other Year 4 students. My family was very proud of me and I was really excited to be able to come into God’s life. Leila Young 4NP

I enjoyed taking the bread and wine and celebrating my First Holy Communion. I enjoyed being confirmed and meeting the bishop and celebrating after with my sponsor. Talia Gagliardi 4NP

I enjoyed my First Communion because I got to spend time with my family. Now, I am more a part of the church community and share in God’s love. Ava Mennillo 4SL

In the Cathedral, all the students who celebrated their Sacrament of Confirmation were blessed by Archbishop Philip Wilson. When we went to the Cathedral on Saturday, we had to take the bread and wine. Mrs Sofia supported us through the whole Mass. Isabella Killen 4SL

I really enjoyed my First Eucharist. I was so excited. I was so surprised by the taste of the wine and bread. I was happy that I was with all my friends. Helen Romano 4SL

In preparation for my Confirmation, we had a workshop day where we made sashes with our saint’s name on it. Also, we learnt about a certain gift of the Holy Spirit. For our First Communion, we received the body and blood of Jesus. Georgia Elborough 4GB

I really enjoyed making our sashes. We had to stick our Confirmation names and the symbols on our sash so we could wear it at our Confirmation. On the evening of our Confirmation, we had to get dressed into our full winter uniform. Before I knew it, we were at the St Francis Xavier Cathedral. We sat in the pews and waited for the ceremony to start. My First Communion was the best of all! The bread tasted like wafer and the wine tasted like sweet grapes! Everyone looked fantastic in their dresses and hairdos. We all had a great day. Sienna Kellerman-Clarke 4GB

I enjoyed getting the blessing and receiving my rosary beads at my Confirmation. At Communion, I enjoyed getting the bread and the wine and celebrating afterwards with my family. Ellayna Hails 4NP

A reminder that our meeting for students and families from Year 3 onwards who are members of the Catholic Church will occur on Wednesday 20 September at 7pm in McAuley Auditorium. Fr Charles Gauci will be present to discuss this sacrament with you. Please note that the celebration date has been changed to Tuesday 24 October at 7pm in St Francis Xavier Cathedral.

SR NICOLE VISITS YEAR 7 STUDENTSOn 12 September 2017, Sr Nicole came to see the Year 7s at St Aloysius College. She came all the way from Melbourne to Adelaide so she could talk to the Year 7s about her work with the young people in the Nuba Mountains in Sudan. In Sudan, a civil war is occurring between the two parts of the country. This means that everyone there is in danger and foxholes are needed for safety. People in the Nuba Mountains have been called ‘insects’ or ‘animals’ their whole lives and do not realise that they are human beings with rights. In the Nuba Mountains, Sr Nicole makes hanging mobiles with the children and delivers the mobiles to the Mother of Mercy Hospital to give to the sick and injured patients. Most of these patients are recovering because of the war. To improve the education at the Nuba Mountains, teachers are trained and scholarships are offered to women. Up to more than 90 students are in a class and to them, every pencil and notebook are precious. Sr Nicole talked to the Year 7s about how mercy means relationships, action and now. Sr Nicole and others have been working in the Nuba Mountains to help improve the education and life there. She does this for the common good because people in Sudan aren't treated fairly. She is giving these people an education so that they can use it to teach others or share their views with the world. She also collects money in different ways, like selling calendars. She brings the money to Sudan to buy school supplies, give teachers more money and start up more schools. She shared her experience over the years enthusiastically and she was extremely kind to all of us. We learned about her experience through images, slideshows and songs. Her talk to the Year 7s was sad, amusing and moving. We have learnt so much about life in the Nuba Mountains and not to take our education for granted.

EMBRACING THE EXPERIENCEDuring Week 6, three Year 9 classes spent the week at Wilpena Pound. They arrived Monday afternoon when it was very cold and they had to set up their tents and get settled in. Tuesday was spent exploring and getting to see all the beautiful native flora and scenery. On Wednesday the girls had a big day of hiking up St Mary’s Peak. They did extremely well, making it to the top and taking some photos to remember their achievements. By Thursday, all campers were tired but enjoyed their last day of hiking and being in the Flinders Rangers. There were many emotions throughout the week but the girls managed to get through the cold nights and long hikes to embrace the experience.

‘LET'S STOP DROWNING IN PLASTIC’SAC has always had a long-standing commitment to Mercy works. One group in particular has been devoted to the cause of environmental justice for the past two years. ‘Greenhouse’ started in 2015 by a group of Year 9 students. Our main initiative since then has been the collection of the daily plastic waste from the Uniform Shop and from newspapers delivered to the library. The plastics are collected by the Greenhouse group each week and counted during the fortnightly meetings. We then recycle the plastics in the bins provided at Coles and our school’s plastic waste is re-purposed into shopping bags and even furniture. Completing this process provides a rewarding experience for us to help the environment and gain a greater understanding of our negative impact on the planet. Despite this feeling, it is difficult not to become overwhelmed by the sheer amount of plastic collected. Each minute, 4000 plastic bags are dumped in Australian landfills. At SAC alone, we have collected a massive amount of plastic sheets that would cover many tennis courts. Therefore, Greenhouse has decided to put forward its message to the community in an effort to inspire others to also recycle their plastic waste. Please join us in the war against waste reduce, reuse, recycle and together we can make a positive impact. Also: Greenhouse will be running a ‘Can you guess?’ competition this Mercy Day where you have the opportunity to win exciting prizes by correctly guessing the total number of plastic sheets collected by Greenhouse during Terms 2 and 3, 2017. See you there!Jasmine Dallimore 11SE (on behalf of Greenhouse) Group Jasmine, Emma, Georgina, Jordan, Jasmine,
